Bill.com charges $49 to $89 per user per month, and that is not what the software costs you. Every payment carries its own fee: a $10,000 invoice costs $0.59 by ACH, $1.99 by posted cheque, $19.99 by international wire, $100 by instant payment and $290 by card. BILL states the position plainly — “Some payment types… also have per-transaction fees, regardless of plan” — so the seat price is a floor, and how you pay matters far more than which tier you buy.
- What it is: Accounts payable and receivable automation — invoice capture, approvals, payments and accounting sync.
- Best for: Businesses paying suppliers by ACH, where the marginal cost is 59 cents.
- Pricing: Essentials $49, Team $65, Corporate $89 per user per month. Verified July 2026.
- The honest catch: The recipient can be charged too, on the same transaction.

Four AP/AR tiers, live chat and phone support on all of them, and a separate fee schedule that runs to several dozen line items.

What actually decides your cost:
- The payment method dominates everything else. On a $10,000 invoice, ACH costs $0.59 and card costs $290 — a difference of 491 times for moving the same money to the same supplier. A business paying twenty such invoices a month would spend $11.80 by ACH or $5,800 by card, against a Corporate seat at $89. The subscription is a rounding error next to the method you choose.
- Only two methods are genuinely free. Virtual card is free outright, and international FX wire or local transfer is free with the exchange rate applied — which is where the margin sits instead, and BILL discloses the rate only “at time of transaction”. Everything else has a stated fee.
- Speed is expensive in absolute terms and cheap in relative ones. Standard ACH is $0.59; Pay Faster ACH is $11.99 — twenty times more — for same-day or next-day settlement. On a large invoice that is still 0.12%, so if timing matters it is worth paying; on a small one it can exceed the invoice’s own value in fees.
- The recipient may also be charged. BILL publishes a separate receiver schedule: ACH $0.59, card 2.9%, instant transfer 1–1.49% (minimum $1), mailed invoice $1.99, international USD wire $19.99. So a single transaction can carry a fee at both ends, which matters when negotiating with suppliers about who absorbs it.
- The error fees are worth reading before onboarding. Failed ACH from sender after the receiver is paid: $50.00. Void a cheque: $25.00. Re-debit after failed funding: $25.00. Void a returned cheque: $3.00. These are the sort of charges that only appear when something goes wrong, and the $50 one is the largest single fee on the page outside percentage-based methods.
- BILL is upfront that fees apply regardless of plan. Its FAQ states: “Some payment types (like checks, ACH, instant transfers, or international payments) also have per‑transaction fees, regardless of plan.” Buying Corporate at $89 does not waive them. That is worth crediting — the fee schedule is published in full rather than left to discovery.
- Spend & Expense genuinely costs nothing. BILL describes it as ”$0 per user per month” and “free from subscription and per‑user software fees”, covering corporate cards, budgets and expense tracking. Its revenue comes from card interchange rather than subscription, which is a coherent model and unusual to see stated so directly.
Who Should Use Bill.com
- Businesses paying suppliers by ACH. The clearest case — 59 cents a payment, whatever the amount.
- Companies with approval workflows. Routing and controls are the core of the product.
- Accounting firms. A dedicated console, with cheaper 1099 e-filing at $1.99.
- Teams wanting free expense management. Spend & Expense adds no software cost.
It fits poorly for businesses paying by card, where 2.9% is uncapped; for very small teams, since $49 per user adds up quickly; and for anyone needing published Enterprise pricing.

Bill.com Alternatives and How It Compares
- Melio is the closest small-business competitor, with free ACH.
- Brex and Ramp approach from corporate cards and spend management.
- Tipalti targets mass payables and global supplier payments.
- Stampli focuses on AP approvals and invoice collaboration.
- AvidXchange serves mid-market AP automation.
The Verdict
BILL is a serious accounts payable platform, and the reason to weigh it carefully is not the subscription. Essentials at $49, Team at $65 and Corporate at $89 per user per month buy invoice capture, approval routing and two-way sync with QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, NetSuite, Xero and others — reasonable for the category. What determines your actual bill is the payment rail, and the spread is extraordinary: on a $10,000 invoice, ACH costs $0.59 and card costs $290. That is 491 times more for moving identical money to an identical supplier. Twenty invoices a month is $11.80 by ACH or $5,800 by card.
So the question to answer before subscribing is not which tier, but how you intend to pay. ACH at 59 cents flat is exceptional — it does not scale with invoice size, so a $100,000 payment costs the same 59 cents as a $100 one. Virtual card and international FX transfers are free outright, though on the latter BILL earns through an exchange rate disclosed only at transaction time. Pay by card at 2.9% is uncapped, which makes it the one method to avoid on large invoices. And note that the recipient has their own fee schedule — ACH $0.59, card 2.9%, instant 1–1.49% — so a single payment can be charged at both ends.
Two things deserve credit. BILL publishes the entire fee schedule — dozens of line items covering payor fees, receiver fees, 1099 filing, Canada and UK specifics — rather than leaving it to be discovered at checkout, and its FAQ says outright that these apply “regardless of plan”. Compared with vendors in this survey who hide renewal prices or omit billing periods entirely, that is the right instinct. Second, BILL Spend & Expense is genuinely $0 per user, described as “free from subscription and per-user software fees” — the company earns on interchange instead. Do read the error fees before you onboard, though: a failed ACH after the receiver has been paid costs $50, and voiding a cheque costs $25.
FAQ
How much does Bill.com cost?
In US dollars captured July 2026: Essentials is $49 per user per month, Team $65 and Corporate $89, with Enterprise custom-priced. BILL Spend & Expense is $0 per user per month. Those subscription prices exclude per-transaction fees, which apply on every plan — ACH is $0.59, cheques $1.99, and card payments 2.9%.
What are Bill.com’s transaction fees?
For the payor: ACH or ePayment $0.59, cheque by post $1.99, virtual card free, international FX wire free (exchange rate applies), international USD wire $19.99, instant payment 1.0% ($9.99 minimum, $100 maximum), Pay Faster ACH $11.99, and card payments 2.9%. Recipients have a separate schedule including ACH $0.59, card 2.9% and instant transfer 1–1.49%.
Is it cheaper to pay by ACH or card on Bill.com?
ACH, by an enormous margin. ACH costs a flat $0.59 regardless of invoice size, while card payments cost 2.9% with no cap. On a $10,000 invoice that is $0.59 against $290 — 491 times more. Since the ACH fee does not scale with amount, the gap widens further on larger payments.
Does a higher Bill.com plan remove the transaction fees?
No. BILL’s FAQ states that certain payment types “also have per-transaction fees, regardless of plan”, so buying Corporate at $89 per user does not waive them. The plan tiers differ on controls, accounting sync, customisation and procurement features rather than on payment costs.
Is BILL Spend & Expense really free?
Per BILL’s own FAQ, yes: the plan “is $0 per user per month and includes corporate cards, budgets, expense tracking, and access to credit lines from $1,000-$5M”, and is described as “free from subscription and per-user software fees”. Credit lines are not guaranteed and depend on application approval. The product is monetised through card interchange rather than subscription.
