Carta is awesome!!! As an employee at a startup, Carta allows me to easily view and exercise my stock options and even transfer funds to pay for my shares when I exercise right through their platform! The UX is super simple and easy to use. They also have a great resource and help center, and their chat support is awesome if you get stuck. I LOVE getting my monthly vesting notifications with the confetti celebration from them. I just recently exercised some stock options and did the entire thing from my phone - money transfer and all! Super simple and easy!!! Another amazing new feature I saw that was just announced was that can now file your 83b elections electronically through Carta --- This is game-changing!!! Super excited about this! From an investor's perspective, I honestly cringe when I make an investment in a company and they are not set up on Carta. Carta makes it so simple and easy to accept my shares on their platform as an investor and I love having everything in one place where I can easily manage it all. They make the entire process extremely easy on investors and the companies issuing the shares. As a founder, I love the free Carta launch plan! It is free for companies that have raised $1M or less and makes it easy to impress potential investors by modeling out your potential funding rounds, etc. It also makes it super easy to issue SAFEs and they have a pre-money SAFE template you can use. Their new compensation benchmarking tools are amazing as well to help out as well! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!
I honestly can't think of much I dislike about Carta. They work with so many startup companies - perhaps they could provide more resources for founders on suggestions for how to save more money for bootstrapping founders -- recommendations for other products and services that help out founders.
Carta makes managing equity easy for founders and their employees. It also makes it some much easier for employees to understand the benefits of receiving equity from the companies they work for. With Carta, it is easy to issue new shares or stock options, and Carta automatically updates the company's cap table every time new shares are issued. Carta also has different tools for founders like SAFEs, Carta total comp for compensation that is really helpful in helping you come up with a compensation strategy for a team. As an investor, Carta makes it so simple to manage my different investments. I wish every company I invested in used Carta -- It should be a requirement!!! :)
Easy navigation around the website gives an enjoyable and quick learning exeprience
The support ticket channel is a long process in order tor receive a response
Simplifying my understanding on how I can achieve my investment goals
Capdesk is a super simple way to manage our cap table. As a first time founder, questions about cap tables can be mind bending, but Capdesk has made it super simple to understand, model and report our shareholder relationships.
There is so much functionality, that I don't truly believe we using Capdesk to its full capability.
Reporting cap tables is a huge pain. Capdesk enables us to report effectively and actually model out our future rounds to estimate what we should be giving away. It has saved us ALOT of time.
Carta does a great job of solving a complex need while making everything feel simple - the UI and reports are intuitive and powerful with the right info easy to find.
As someone without a background in equity, I'm likely not using it to its potential.
Carta is our SEC Transfer agent and our source of truth of ownership - they make that so easy it is easy to forget how powerful what they do is.
Since I moved into my new role, I have really seen the upside of the reporting that Capdesk offers. It is a great way to check the details of employee options on a grant basis, an employee basis and as a high level summary.
Sometimes you have to extract data from different resources and combine them together to find what you are looking for. Everybody has unique uses for data but it would be great if the experience could be customised.
It is allowing us to give an improved employee experience as employees can quickly gain insight into the details of their options. Additionally, the leaver/exercise process has now been automised, saving our People Ops team a lot of manual work.
The most helpful thing about Capdesk for me is the ability to jump in at any time and see exactly who owns what, when options vest etc. We also use the email feature each month to send investor updates. And the new dashboard which has been redesigned is a great source of information during fundraising (I often screenshot the charts - maybe a download PNG button would be nice at some point - and maybe Capdesk branded?)
Nothing really, at the very beginning it was a bit of a headache setting things up as we had already been through 2 fundraises so things needed imported and setup correctly. But once you're setup and going its great.
We wanted to find a way to keep our investors and employees in the loop with ultimate transparency. And we also did NOT want to rely on a Google Sheet like we had done in the past! I can now be confident that our investors and employees can log in at any time and see the most up-to-date information about their shareholding.
Not having to manage a cap table in a spreadsheet; turnkey cap table management with an awesome support team.
I dislike not having a nice modern interface to manage our cap table - which is what Carta fixes.
Huge time and legal cost saver, confusion reduction.
The customer service team is easy to access and remarkably helpful. The actual system is pretty easy to use.
Sometimes the prompts are confusing, let alone the ramifications of the choices.
Helps guide the documents needed to keep things official and in order; keeps track of the cap table.
1)Carta comp allows us to ensure we are paying team members fairly 2)Carta tax services allow team members to understand their equity 3)The account and tech teams are extremely helpful
Nothing to note. The program is overall great.
1) Explaining equity 2) Fair compensation 3) Tax consequences of equity 4) Cap table management
Simple user flows and help tools to navigate for your equity needs
ACH transaction not made available for investors but wire transfers
Shows transparency in your need for Capitol, especially when presenting your company to others
As a Registered Patent Attorney, I like having my clients' corporations all on one platform, and there are never any questions about accuracy or mismanagement. Everything is taken care of, and this allows my clients to grow, scale, and fund their businesses at a much faster and efficient pace.
I'm not too fond of the number of required documents and information that I am required to provide to set up a new business/corporate account, but in the end, it is worth having that required information.
The problems I am solving with Carta include time management, better business advice and consulting, and the common predicament of a lack of transparency regarding equity and cap.
Makes it so much easier than spreadsheets to keep track of equity raises. Gamechanger when you do multiple rounds!
Requires a bit of work up-front to get cap table online. Capdesk team are really helpful with it!
How to manage our equity investors and employee shareholder options. Its significantly cut down on the time to do both plus made it easy for employees to understand their options!
The ease of use and excellent customer service.
None!!! Carta is and has been a positive experience for me.
Now that I have retired, I am faced with the obvious question to me: What now or what happens next.
Very clean, simple, and easily understandable interface with a focus on the information and actions that matter most.
There was some slight confusion around how to see the tax implications when I sold but figured out I had to select a date when I would be vested.
Managing my employee stock options.
Adding all the investors in one place Uploading required documents copy of term sheets, identities, etc See the timeline of investment and dilutions. Allow investors to have a look at updated cap table instantly
Setting the account up took us over a month. The price is a bit high comparing to other similar products. The mobile app does not have lots of functionality comparing to the web app
Having a clear overview of the cap table as a whole or for a specific period of time for the founders and or the investors. Allow investors to communicate directly with the founders from within the web app or the mobile app
Anything a startup needs to do for equity management, Carta is built for it. Reporting is easy. Issuing options is easy. Board approvals are easy. 409As are easy.
It does get pricey as you scale, and switching costs are high. Once you're in the system, the costs go up each year and it isn't all that transparent until you get the invoice.
We've had Carta ever since we started bringing on external investors to our company. Today, we've raised Seed, Series A, and Series B rounds and brought on over 100 employees and investors with equity. I can't imagine living without it.
Carta makes tracking and managing our company's equity plan a breeze. If you're dealing with a lot of equity stock for new employees, this is a crucial toolset to have to make sure everything is not only compliant, but that employees ALWAYS have access to their information, regardless if they are current, ex, or new to the company. We really struggled to track and communicate this information to our employee base prior to subscribing to the software, but since using it, have had zero problems.
My biggest gripe is the navigation of the website. I often find it difficult to find exactly what I am looking for when tracking down information. There could be a clearer road to getting the information you need, like reporting or employee details.
Communication and accessibility are the two biggest problems we've solved by using Carta. HR is no longer tied up in tracking down information since employees can find it on their own. And when someone leaves the company, everything is still and accessible.
Very easy for Board Members, Investors and Employees to have information about the company and access to the cap table according to the company policy.
Onboarding and implementation took a little bit longer but is part of the compliance. Customer care and support was great along the process.
Employees can see and track their options. One source for the cap table. Easy to maintain contact with investors.
Very complete CAP table information presented in useful formats.
Honestly, it has serviced us well. Perhaps some additional FAQs to go deeper into details on investment types.
409a process built in without typical external costs for preparation. Easily track various investment rounds and types.
It was so intuitive that we were able to get it stood and operational in less than a day. In addition, it is the good standard for accessing and using company 'data rooms' in all due diligence efforts within the investor community.
Hard to say. The tool is still emerging an and will likely improve.
Putting all of corporate docs in one place and allowing for us to access in an efficient way.
