I've been a DigitalOcean customer since they started out. Their low price is what initially enticed me to give it a shot, but they've done a great job of keeping me as a happy customer. It's evident that the company culture is super conducive to a happy work environment, and it really shows in their product. Their support team is responsive and friendly. The user interface is easy to use and cheerful. As an added value, they have a fantastic set of tutorials and blog posts detailing just about everything you can do with their products.
There's not a lot you could dislike about this company. The only improvement I'd like want is the option for more one click apps.
I initially started using DigitalOcean as a kind of "playground". I would spin up a server and test a few things out for a couple of days, then destroy it. Now, I've actually migrated my entire infrastructure to DO, in some cases using their one-click applications, in other cases deploying my own custom solution.
It's easy to activate and deactivate your droplet, the price is good for the amount of space and ram you get. Makes you want to try it out.
Some of the tutorials on how to do things are not very concise. It's also difficult to know if you have the same setup after you've already configured a whole bunch of things. However with a little perseverance you get there... Does take time.
Hosting multiple Node.js applications on a server.
From my understanding as user with medium experience on server management the level of feature offered is very good, I have also tested with other bigger providers bit find Digital Ocean easier to manage
Maybe some other providers now have more affordable small plans.
Can launch a VPS very effectively
Though I know I am using the bare amount of features DO has to offer, it is easy to manage droplets/projects and has been an incredible tool as a learning web developer.
The UI / initial setup was a little intimitating at first.
DO has solved more problems than I can list here, but in short -- all of them. DO has solved all of them.
For me, DigitalOcean is the perfect IaaS service. I appreciate the simplicity of chosing the exact product I need and the quality of the overall service. Compared to the most of the competitors, it keeps being my favorite when comes to bring a VM up in minutes. Linode is also a good alternative.
Sometimes I need to chose different services for not having the right SLA level or the lack of discounts for long-term commited services. Pre-paid discounted monthy plans would be a very appreciated improvement.
It solves my need to create on the spot VMS for dev and short-lived projects.
Super clear pricing; up front, transparent, I always know each month what the bill will be.
No downsides. Not quite as full featured, but has what I need.
Remote compute, storage, and servers
Using DigitalOcean is extremely convenient, particularly when helping clients self-hose their new websites. Signing up to DigitalOcean is a straightforward experience, and getting started is a breeze.
To be honest, not a lot. Initially it can be a bit of a minefield when deciding on what droplet to use, but everything is documented well and enables even the most technically limited people get up and running.
We build and deploy websites and services to our clients, but we do not have the infrastructure to host everything. DigitalOcean makes this so much simpler as our clients can host and control their own webserver, allowing us to deploy their new website to somewhere accessible, secure and convenient.
The service is very reliable vs others. I love the expandability and wide variety. I primarily use Linux OSs to connect with my droplets. Pricing is very competitive compared to others, like Linode.
I wish I could pay in advance, for example on a yearly basis or do a bulk payment for several months instead of strictly month by month. Other than this, there aren't any other dislikes for the service itself.
My first project was personal learning of a cloud environment. After this evolved I started expanding looking for a personal storage medium that I controlled, away from Dropbox or Google drive. Then I wanted to create a VPN tunnel for myself when connecting to open hotspots out and about. Everything I have done initially has been personal, but I have suggested it to friends for business purposes because of their expandability. I have used it for a period of time when I was assisting with the technology aspects of a custom lure business. I also for a period was working on my own coin store, which has since shut down.
Easy to use, quick setup within minutes.
Downgrading of specs (e.g. reducing RAM) is troublesome
Quick and easy cloud services
Their dashboard is amazing, although some features like droplet snapshots should be explained a little bit better. The billing section is also very useful to keep track of expenses
The pricing is a little bit higher than their competitors, but I guess it's kind of a given when you have DO's reputation. Nothing much to be reported other than that
DO has great support and their networking is among the most reliable I've used, not to mention it is very fast and has high availability. Bandwidth is also amazing
The convenience of using the service, also there is excellent management and support team
I would like more locations in which it is possible to place a VPS
We order a lot of VPS from Digital Ocean for all of our project modules
DigitalOcean give me the best experience to handle and manage own server for website, with the cheaper price as low as $5 per month. Also have a $100 credit for starter to use their services
Everything is good, but if DigitalOcean can increase the CPU for low budget server to 2vCPU i think is much better.
Traffic to our website's, because DigitalOcean have many datacenter in the world just choose where your target audience country's
Easy interface, Easy configurations , User friendly and Support.
During some Datacenter maintenance, we cant able to create the services in the same region. Some droplets do not support some regions with some requirements such as 8GB or 16GB with an SSD option. I mean need to indicate that properly.
I can able to avoid complications/configurations compared to other providers and they are very transparent there is no hidden charges.
The design in every aspect made to simplify all the complexity to the maximum it could be.
Pricing is high when compared other cloud service providers.
Setting up stupidly simple virtual private server.
it can be easily managed through a web interface. In DigitalOcean, Droplets are flexible computer platform that can be customized to meet all of a business's application needs and it also includes add-on storage, monitoring, and additional security.
I have been worked on the could service in the various datacenter, some of the key features are not available and some of the features are not able to use with VM's located in different datacenters.
I have been hosted more than twenty of websites on DigitalOccean, I would like the undergo of deploying the servers and reduces the cost.
The platform offers a good selection of O.S. variants, uptime has been great, and there are excellent tutorials on setting up the environment for numerous tasks. Particularly happy with the addition of FreeBSD, and now kubernetes.
The pricing model is sometimes a bit hard to predict how much one will be charged.
The main business problem I use Digital Ocean for is reasonable cost hosting services for websites and web applications. I have also used Digital Ocean for development and testing.
I like the simplicity of hosting as digitalocean makes it easy, safe, and while looking nice and having VERY affordable prices.
I dislike the amount of different tabs available as things can get messy fairly quick but as long as you know the website structure you’re fine.
We are realizing that digitalocean is by far much easier to use than godaddy and any other hosting website.
DigitalOcean's documentation is what truly sets them apart. The interface is well design and easy to use, allowing you to get up and running quickly.
The billing process could be improved somewhat, but otherwise there have really been no drawbacks.
DigitalOcean made it extremely easy to begin moving our web development process to a cloud environment.
There is plenty of support provided by the community documentation and the support staff is very quick to respond.
Recent TOS invalidated credit from promo code if not used by end of April. Forces users to spin up expensive VPS to use up credit.
DevOps. We needed to deploy our stack on several servers and DigitalOcean's cheap VPS offerings allow us to scale without breaking our budget. Their command line interface has allowed us to write several provisioning scripts to quickly scale up or down on demand.
DigitalOcean managed to grow big and fast by offering a simple and effective solution to the server market. What I like most is the ability to spin up a so-called droplet within a minute, and shut it down at any time you want. You only pay for the reserved time that your droplet is available (this includes also when it is currently not running but configured only). Recently DigitalOcean also allows to set up "floating" IPs that can be allocated from droplet to droplet to allow an almost seamless transition between droplet sizes, website updates and more. Currently, there is no product on the market (that I know) that allows the management of droplets in a short time and a reasonable price.
If you droplet is not running you are still being charged the full hourly price. This could be changed by e.g. decreasing the costs at least. Sometimes you want a server only run when you actively need it to be. But for people like me that usually run their website projects all around the clock this does not matter.
DigitalOcean helps me to provide an active development system for my own needs including automatic Backups and floating IPs to allow an instant reachability on the internet. Recently I downgraded and removed some droplets to reduce even more costs and management overhead for me. For most small websites and even static ones (the best in connection with CloudFlare) you can already create a very good, reliable and fast website for any location on earth.
