Amplitude Analytics Expert Review

Amplitude gives you 2 million events a month free forever, and then prices on events rather than users, which is the detail that catches people out. Event volume grows with the number of things your product does, not with how many customers you have. Teams routinely discover that shipping features, not acquiring users, is what moves them into a procurement conversation.

  • What it is: A product analytics platform for understanding user behaviour, with cohorts, funnels, session replay, and experimentation.
  • Best for: Product teams at companies with a dedicated analyst or the appetite to build one, tracking behaviour rather than page views.
  • Pricing: Free for 2M events/month. Plus starts at $0 and scales to 70M events. Growth and Enterprise are custom, event-based. Verified in July 2026.
  • The honest catch: Growth and Enterprise have no published pricing at all, and reviewers report Amplitude costing two to five times Mixpanel at equivalent usage.

What Is Amplitude?

Amplitude’s product analytics page presenting its behavioural analytics platform.

Amplitude is a behavioural analytics platform, which is a meaningfully different thing from web analytics. Google Analytics tells you how many people visited a page. Amplitude tells you which sequence of actions preceded a conversion, which cohort of users retained after a feature launch, and where in a multi-step flow people abandon.

The customer list reflects the seriousness of the tooling: Atlassian, Square, Zoom, Qualtrics, and Gong all appear on its pricing page. This is a product built for teams that treat product decisions as analytical questions.

In 2026 Amplitude has added AI Agents with Model Context Protocol support, session replay, and, like several other products in this catalogue, AI Visibility prompt tracking. That last addition is notable: Semrush, Surfer, Writesonic, and now Amplitude have all built AI-search visibility into products that previously had nothing to do with it.

The independent rating is good on a modest sample, at roughly 4.6 out of 5 on Capterra across 67 reviews.

How Amplitude Works

  • Event-based tracking. Every user action, a click, a page view, a signup, a purchase, is an event. This is the billing unit and the analytical unit.
  • Cohorts and retention. Behavioural cohorts, retention curves, and funnel analysis are the core, and where Amplitude clearly beats general web analytics.
  • Session replay. 10,000 monthly replays even on free, rising to 50,000 on Enterprise.
  • Experiments, guides, and surveys. Included in limited form on free, expanding with tier.
  • AI Agents and MCP. Available on every plan including free, letting AI assistants query your analytics directly.
  • Governance. SSO and project permissions on Growth, data access controls and RBAC on Enterprise.

Amplitude Pricing

Four tiers, two of them unpriced. Figures verified on Amplitude’s pricing page in July 2026.

Amplitude’s pricing page showing Free with 2 million events per month forever, Plus starting at $0 and scaling to 70 million events, and custom event-based pricing for Growth and Enterprise.

Plan Price Events/month Session replays Notable
Free $0 forever 2M 10,000 AI Agents and MCP, basic analytics, 500 AI Visibility prompts, no card required
Plus Starts at $0 Up to 70M 10,000 Custom events and formulas, 20 behavioural cohorts, alerts, heatmaps, 2-year retention. Card required
Growth Custom Event-based 20,000 Advanced behavioural exploration, monitoring, SSO and project permissions
Enterprise Custom Event-based 50,000 Unlimited projects, data access controls, RBAC

What determines what you pay:

  • Events are not users. One person in one session can generate dozens of events. A product that ships more instrumented features generates more events from the same audience, which is why reviewers describe cost rising faster than headcount or revenue. This is the single most important thing to internalize.
  • 2 million free events is genuinely generous. For an early-stage product it can last a long time, and it is a real free tier rather than a trial.
  • Plus “starts at $0” is usage pricing, not a free plan. The first 2M events are free, a credit card is required, and beyond that you pay by volume. Amplitude provides a bill estimator, which is worth using rather than guessing.
  • Growth and Enterprise are unpriced. Reviewers specifically note that opaque pricing at those tiers forces sales conversations smaller teams would rather avoid.
  • Cost at scale is the dominant complaint. Reviewers across multiple platforms report Amplitude costing two to five times Mixpanel for equivalent usage.
  • The startup scholarship is worth knowing about. Companies with under $10M in funding and fewer than 20 employees can get a free year of the Growth plan, which is a substantial offer and not widely publicized.

Who Should Use Amplitude

  • Product teams making behavioural decisions. The clearest case. Retention analysis, cohort behaviour, and funnel diagnosis are what this tool is for.
  • Early-stage products. 2M free events plus the startup scholarship makes Amplitude close to free for a company that qualifies.
  • Teams with analytical capacity. Reviewers consistently report a two-to-four-week ramp, so this rewards teams with someone who owns analytics.
  • Companies already instrumented for events. If your product emits structured events, Amplitude turns them into answers quickly.

It fits poorly for teams wanting simple traffic reporting, where Google Analytics or Plausible cost nothing and answer the question, for organizations needing predictable budgets, given usage-based pricing on an unpredictable meter, and for teams without an analyst, since the learning curve is real.

Honest Pros and Cons

Strengths

  • A genuinely generous free tier. 2 million events a month forever, with no card, including session replay and AI agents.
  • Best-in-class behavioural analysis. Cohorts, retention, and funnels handled better than in general analytics tools.
  • The startup scholarship. A free year of Growth for qualifying early-stage companies is a serious offer.
  • AI Agents and MCP on every plan. Including free, which lets assistants query analytics directly.
  • Session replay included from free. 10,000 monthly replays at no cost is unusual.
  • Credible at scale. Atlassian, Square, Zoom, and Qualtrics are reference customers for a reason.

Limitations

  • Event-based pricing is hard to forecast. Volume tracks features shipped rather than users acquired, and reviewers report costs arriving sooner than expected.
  • Growth and Enterprise are unpriced. No published figures, so evaluation requires a sales conversation.
  • Expensive at scale. Reported at two to five times Mixpanel for equivalent usage, and cited as the top complaint across review sites.
  • A steep learning curve. Two to four weeks for teams to become productive, and longer for non-technical users.
  • Needs an owner. Meaningful dashboards require deliberate configuration, which is difficult without a dedicated analyst.
  • A modest review base. 67 Capterra reviews is thin, though the enterprise customer list carries its own weight.

Amplitude Alternatives and How It Compares

  • Mixpanel is the direct competitor and is consistently reported as considerably cheaper at equivalent volume, with somewhat less analytical depth.
  • PostHog is the open-source option, self-hostable, with a generous free tier and a broader product suite.
  • Google Analytics is free and answers traffic questions rather than behavioural ones. Most teams need both rather than one.
  • Semrush and other SEO platforms cover acquisition rather than in-product behaviour, and complement rather than compete.
  • Heap competes on automatic event capture, which removes some instrumentation work at the cost of data hygiene.

For a broader view, browse our product analytics directory.

The Verdict

Amplitude is the strongest behavioural analytics platform available to most teams, and its free tier is unusually good: 2 million events a month forever, with session replay and AI agents included, is a real product rather than a demo. For an early-stage company, particularly one that qualifies for the startup scholarship and its free year of Growth, the economics are close to unbeatable.

Understand the meter before you commit, though. Amplitude charges by events, and events grow with what your product does rather than with how many customers you have. Teams repeatedly report the same experience: a feature launch increases instrumentation, event volume climbs faster than user count, and a procurement conversation arrives months before anyone had budgeted for it. Use the bill estimator with a realistic forecast of your instrumentation, not your traffic.

Two further cautions. Growth and Enterprise carry no published pricing at all, so comparison requires a sales process, and reviewers report Amplitude running two to five times Mixpanel’s cost at equivalent usage. And budget two to four weeks of ramp: this is a tool that rewards a dedicated owner and frustrates teams hoping for insight without configuration. If you have that person, it is excellent. If you do not, you will pay for capability you never reach.

FAQ

How does Amplitude count events?

An event is any tracked user action: a button click, a page view, a signup, a purchase. One user in one session can generate many events, and a single monthly tracked user can generate dozens across a month. Crucially, event volume grows as you instrument more of your product, so shipping features increases your bill even if your user count is flat.

Is Amplitude’s free plan actually free?

Yes, and generously so. The Free plan includes 2 million events per month forever with no credit card required, plus 10,000 monthly session replays, basic product analytics, AI Agents with MCP, and 500 active AI Visibility prompts. It is a working tier rather than a trial. Note that the Plus plan, which “starts at $0”, is different: it gives the first 2M events free but requires a card and charges by usage beyond that.

How much does Amplitude cost at scale?

Amplitude does not publish pricing for its Growth and Enterprise tiers, both of which are event-based and quoted through sales. Reviewers across multiple platforms report Amplitude costing roughly two to five times Mixpanel for equivalent usage, and expensive pricing at scale is the most commonly cited complaint.

Does Amplitude offer anything for startups?

Yes, and it is not widely publicized. Companies with under $10 million in funding and fewer than 20 employees can receive one free year of the Growth plan through Amplitude’s startup scholarship. For a qualifying early-stage team that is a substantial saving and well worth applying for before paying for anything.

Is Amplitude hard to learn?

Reasonably, yes. Reviewers consistently describe a two-to-four-week ramp before teams feel productive, with non-technical users at the longer end, and note that meaningful dashboards require deliberate configuration. It rewards teams with a dedicated analytics owner and disappoints those expecting insight without setup work.

"Amplitude is very informative and helpful!"
What do you like best about Amplitude Analytics?

The customer success team, specifically my point of contact - Alex, is always there to answer my questions and brainstorm how to get the data I want. The chat feature is also very quick and can help answer basic questions.

What do you dislike about Amplitude Analytics?

It is difficult to measure the time a user spends on the page, which can be difficult as that is a common statistic needed in the commerce space. I'd also like the ability to add headers to the dashboards to label specific sections.

What problems is Amplitude Analytics solving and how is that benefiting you?

Amplitude Analytics is helping my team track the conversion of users purchasing products though NBCUCheckout. I can see granular data of where users are falling off in the process and use these stats to drive product improvements.

"Knowing about analytics"
What do you like best about Amplitude Analytics?

This language is easier to comprehend because it is comparable to SQL. It is simple to create charts and do comprehensive analyses. I appreciate how simple it is to set titles and categories using the new method of controlling events and attributes. We also offer other choices for doing a comprehensive analysis.

What do you dislike about Amplitude Analytics?

New users have a long way to go before using some of the platform's more advanced features.

What problems is Amplitude Analytics solving and how is that benefiting you?

Amplitude lets us immediately see what we did not know about our data. Previously, our entire data team was required to produce dashboards for us to filter and create funnels.

Being able to develop cohorts of specific user groups to analyse them separatly from the overall public has been one of the most useful features of the Amplitude app for me

What do you dislike about Amplitude Analytics?

Being basically a full self service with minimal coding interface for user behaviour tracking, sometimes the development of different views and segment analyses can become a little bit complex

"Easy to generate simple analysis about the users, but hard to do a little bit more complex stuff"
What do you like best about Amplitude Analytics?

Analysis like segmentation and funnel give thoughtful insights in a straightforward way. The platform is also high-speed. It is easy to work with user segmentation for simple analysis.

What do you dislike about Amplitude Analytics?

It is hard to do a little bit more complex analysis. I have trouble creating user cohorts for users who did one event OR another. Other problems that I face here are related to instrumentation. Tracking a user experience in app with web views is a little tricky, since when user is in the app it has a device ID, but when it moves to a screen implemented as a web view it has another device ID. Sessions analysis is also not the best in Amplitude. It is hard hard to understand the number of sessions where one event OR another took place.

What problems is Amplitude Analytics solving and how is that benefiting you?

Amplitude is a great event tracking platform. Funnel analysis is what I use the most here in my company. It is excellent to understand how users are moving through the acquisition funnel. It is also great to understand what are the different paths users are following in the product and the biggest drop-outs. Segmentation analysis is great for understanding big numbers and how metrics are variating over time.

"Product-focussed UI provides great guiderails for PM/PO roles"
What do you like best about Amplitude Analytics?

I like that the UI is very focused on the Product Owner and Product Manager roles, with specific chart types (such as funnel) for PM questions. I like the persistent URLs that allow chart edits and versions to be shared without even needing to be saved, and so edits are also persisted in the browser history. The consistent layout of chart parameters is easy to learn and means you can quickly learn enough basics to get simple charts and questions answered. The Notebooks feature is great for helping to present an analytics investigation.

What do you dislike about Amplitude Analytics?

I'd like clearer guidance on instrumentation, and although the Govern interface (for defining event taxonomies) is useful we haven't had time to use it fully. Some of the more advanced charts can be hard to interpret into easy to understand stakeholder insights: stickiness and retention can be hard to explain for example.

What problems is Amplitude Analytics solving and how is that benefiting you?

It's helping us to investigate customer behaviour and socialise our hypotheses and learnings amongst our stakeholder group. It's giving POs and PMs more confidence in their prioritisation decisions, with a data basis for decision making.

"Clean & Quick Design"
What do you like best about Amplitude Analytics?

I like the clean look and feel of the platform overall. Once your data is in, it is very easy to manipulate the insights quickly. (much preferred) No excels and multiple data points can be analyzed at once which is great.

What do you dislike about Amplitude Analytics?

Better intro tutorials would be helpful in the live platform with your data. The Amplitunes example is great, but most companies aren't music/ download based. Possibly switch to an eCommerce platform example.

What problems is Amplitude Analytics solving and how is that benefiting you?

Using Amplitude for app marketing, insights, UI experience improvements. It has been very insightful for these items, as long as you have the codes in the platform.

"Amplitude is an easily usable product analytics tool, which has proven to provide value at M1."
What do you like best about Amplitude Analytics?

What I most like about Amplitude is how quickly I can put together a string of visuals capable of telling a story while also answering all potential stakeholder questions.

What do you dislike about Amplitude Analytics?

I enjoy Amplitude a great deal, however, the only thing I dislike at times is the user interface. As a product analytics professional, I have no problem understanding what's displayed on the screen at any given time. Unfortunately, my stakeholders often require some time to orient themselves with Amplitude's interface before they can digest the information being provided.

What problems is Amplitude Analytics solving and how is that benefiting you?

Amplitude has allowed M1 a quick and easy method for displaying how users progress through our onboarding process. This has directly impacted decision making around what that onboarding process looks like.

"Fast and reliable tool"
What do you like best about Amplitude Analytics?

The tool is great. The mobile SDK is very well built and easy to integrate. It has rich documentation and has support for flutter. The web dashboard is great too and easy and fast to use. The new alert feature is what I was missing.

What do you dislike about Amplitude Analytics?

The dashboard UI/UX is good, but not great. It seems like an old software that uses a hamburger menu and adds unnecessary complexity to create new charts. Adding charts to a dashboard or notebook could be easier, transferring ownership too. Also, the organization to find created dashboards could be better.

What problems is Amplitude Analytics solving and how is that benefiting you?

Fast analysis to decision making, sharing data with teammates and following product health up. It also helps to identify and debug problems, using the user look-up feature, which is pretty good.

"Friendly tool for non-technical people"
What do you like best about Amplitude Analytics?

There's a friendly interface and really helpful tutorials. After understanding how my company data is structured on Amplitude, I learned by myself how to use the tool. My favorite feature is the one in which I can track the events using my own product's app.

What do you dislike about Amplitude Analytics?

The pathfinder chart does not work very well for my product. It'd be useful to be able to select the events' properties in the chart, not only the events. Another thing is that when I have a funnel with a lot of screens, I'm not able to change the name of the steps in the chart manually, for some reason the editing feature becomes disabled.

What problems is Amplitude Analytics solving and how is that benefiting you?

I can have real-time data on customers' behavior in my products' app. When launching a new experiment in the app, in the Amplitude I can see first if everything is working properly.

I love the dashboard feature because it allows me to have a holistic view, by being able to place all the relevant graphs in one place. The funnel is another of the graphs that I really like since it allows me to see the number of users I have in each stage and their conversion % so I know what to improve

What do you dislike about Amplitude Analytics?

"Easy to use and gives a great insight into the data."
What do you like best about Amplitude Analytics?

The cross-platform functionality and ability to import data from other sources. The multi-use case to analyse users and debug situations is very helpful. Would recommend people to use the app.

What do you dislike about Amplitude Analytics?

Sometimes I have observed a few bugs here and there. From personal experience, there was a mismatch in my data between Amplitude and optimizely during an A/B test.

"Best Analytics suit for user behaviour tracking"
What do you like best about Amplitude Analytics?

Great for understqanding how users are using your product and dive into their pain points, what features are driving engagement and which features are frustrating users. Easily retest your hypothesis with easy to use interface, no technical skills required and lightning fast results. Product teams are in control of the data and do not require to know complicated SQL or depend on BI.

What do you dislike about Amplitude Analytics?

Keeping your data organized and consistent will require quite a bit of control as it is tempting to send every event imaginable which will later backfire. Maybe a good feature would be that Amplitude sends new detected events into review for them to be approved before going into production.

What problems is Amplitude Analytics solving and how is that benefiting you?

Amplitude is helping us find user pain points and understand what could be done to improve their experience with our app. New features can be A/B tested to ensure we are not affecting business metrics.

"Very helpful platform, crucial to understanding product performance, complex to set up"
What do you like best about Amplitude Analytics?

Amplitude is a relatively sophisticated way to plot product usage and analyze areas to focus. It has a handful of product offerings to enable you to hack together most analyses you'd want. Once you get the hang of using the platform, it's quite powerful.

What do you dislike about Amplitude Analytics?

The platform isn't so easy for team members to learn, meaning usage and institutional knowledge are pretty concentrated among those who set it up. And the set-up is non-trivial, with best practices that if not followed (by reading online articles) can cause several unforeseen issues that are decent lifts to fix. Also, there are a handful of areas where the logic and charting capabilities fall short of the nuanced analyses and calculations we'd like. There are also a lot of features under development that aren't quite nailing it yet, but I hope they will be in the near future.

What problems is Amplitude Analytics solving and how is that benefiting you?

Ability to get real-time and historical information on product usage and performance. It helps us with reporting, issue-flagging, experimenting with new features, and monitoring areas of dropoff and where we can improve our product.

"Amplitude Analytics gives us full visibility on our multiple apps with powerful tools"
What do you like best about Amplitude Analytics?

Amplitude Analytics makes custom event ingestion and user identification possible in code, but most importantly makes the analysis seamless in the console. Other competitors can offer more out-of-the-box front-end tracking, but with the complexity of our platform and our products, we need advanced custom tracking to answer our analytics needs, which Amplitude can offer. Amplitude can easily ingest tons of events and govern their taxonomy straight in the console. We can observe single user tendencies as well as global tendencies for projects with just a few clicks. The visualization tools are extremely powerful and can answer almost any question that could come to mind, whether it be about event segmentation, user paths or retention.

What do you dislike about Amplitude Analytics?

Amplitude is mostly made for power users. When it comes to making the console available to the whole company, it can be overwhelming for some having all those options and no starred content upfront. The onboarding experience could be better by giving the administrators the ability to modify it and display the right content right away to the right people and having starred dashboards in their navbar, etc. Right now, you can only customize your own space and not those of others, every user is considered a power user.

What problems is Amplitude Analytics solving and how is that benefiting you?

Solving our need for front-end tracking, back-end tracking and user session stitching altogether across our apps. We can have a mix of page views, super granular custom events from the front-end, feedback events from the back-end and segment them properly with any event property we'd like. Before it was hard for a Product Manager to find clear and realistic KPIs for a very granular feature part of a big product; Amplitude helps our Product Managers observe all kinds of precise events from the start of the release, define clear KPIs on their features and track them in real-time. It makes us way more actionable when it comes to investment in features and makes our products better in the long run. The simple act of implementing Amplitude also gives us a straight QA feedback look and makes us rethink UX and our whole data-driven design process.

"Amplitude the best friend for data-driven companies"
What do you like best about Amplitude Analytics?

Amplitude, in my opinion, is the easiest tool to make charts but also to interpret them for any data-driven company. I would highly recommend it compared to any other one which are really complex and most of the time confusing.

What do you dislike about Amplitude Analytics?

I don't have many disliking. The only chart that I find confusing is the Impact analysis which is difficult to understand because the time range that it shows is always -14 to +14 days from a starting date. But as it doesn't show the starting date in the chart, it's really difficult to use it. I hope that in the upcoming months it will be improved. Because it is one of the charts that I would use the most.

What problems is Amplitude Analytics solving and how is that benefiting you?

One of the problems that Amplitude helps us to solve the most are the conversions, thanks to the Funnel Chart. Thanks to it, we know at any instance which step needs most of our attention.
