There is no month-to-month plan on this page at all, which is easy to miss when the second button just reads “billed monthly” in the shop. The good news is that the instalment penalty is trivially small — 1.4% on the base plan — and the rest of Foxit’s pricing is unusually honest, including a perpetual licence at $209.99 that costs less over three years than any of its own subscriptions.

What Is Foxit PDF Editor?

Foxit PDF Editor — historically sold as PhantomPDF, which is why the Findstack listing carries both names — is a direct Adobe Acrobat competitor. It does the full professional set: edit text and images with paragraph reflow, convert to and from Word, Excel and PowerPoint, OCR scanned documents into searchable PDFs, build and fill forms, compare two versions, redact, apply Bates numbering, and password-protect files.

Around that, Foxit has assembled a fuller platform than the name suggests:

• Foxit DMS, a document management system with shared workspaces, check-in/check-out locking, version history and unlimited cloud storage — included free with every subscription.
• Foxit eSign, legally binding signature workflows with pooled envelopes.
• AI Assistant, for summarising, translating, rewriting, chatting with a document and generating images in place.
• Smart Redact, AI-driven batch removal of personally identifiable information.

It runs on Windows, macOS and the web on the base plan, adding iOS and Android on PDF Editor+. Foxit publishes SOC 2 Type 2, GDPR, TAA, Section 508, VPAT and ADA compliance — the accessibility certifications in particular matter if you sell to government.

The Findstack listing carries no user reviews, so there is no independent signal here beyond the vendor’s own pages.

How Foxit PDF Editor Works

Two subscriptions, one perpetual licence, and an AI add-on:

The trial is 14 days with no credit card required, which Foxit contrasts against Adobe’s 7 days with a card. That is a fair and checkable comparison, and the more generous side of it.

Look at the toggle in the screenshot. The left option is “Annual plan, paid in full” with a SAVE badge; the right is “Annual plan, billed monthly”.

On the pricing page that wording is unambiguous. In the shop, the same control is labelled simply “Paid in Full” and “Billed Monthly” — and a monthly figure of €10.96 with “Add to Cart” underneath reads, at a glance, like a monthly subscription you could stop at any time. It is not. It is a twelve-month commitment collected in instalments.

To Foxit’s credit, the small print beneath the price does say “Annual, billed monthly”, so nothing is concealed. But if you want genuine month-to-month flexibility, this product does not offer it, and that is worth knowing before you compare the €10.96 figure against a competitor’s true monthly rate.

The instalment penalty is almost nothing

Where most vendors charge 15–25% for paying monthly, Foxit charges close to zero:

Paying monthly on the base plan costs you €1.85 a year. That is a genuinely good deal and deserves saying plainly: since you are committing for twelve months either way, take the instalments and keep the cash.

Buying once is cheaper than renting, for three years at least

Foxit still sells a perpetual licence — PDF Editor 14, €209.47 or $209.99, one-time, Windows and macOS. Against the subscriptions:

Over three years the perpetual licence costs less than half what the base subscription does. Foxit’s own FAQ argues against it — “For most users, a Foxit PDF Editor or PDF Editor+ subscription is the better value” — and, unusually, that is fair rather than self-serving, because the perpetual licence excludes AI Assistant, Smart Redact, Foxit DMS, cloud storage and full eSign integration.

There is one more cost the arithmetic hides: “perpetual” means version 14, forever. Major upgrades are a new purchase. So the honest framing is that the perpetual licence is cheaper if you want a desktop PDF editor and nothing else, and will quietly fall behind if you want the platform.

The Plus upgrade is the best-value thing on the page

PDF Editor+ costs €29.92 more per year than PDF Editor, and for that you get mobile apps, AI Smart Redact, and Foxit eSign with 150 envelopes a year.

Treat the envelopes alone as the whole value of the upgrade and they work out at 19.9¢ each. Dedicated e-signature products routinely charge more than that per envelope, and several charge more per month than Foxit charges per year for the whole allowance. Even a user who sends thirty agreements a year is getting them at about €1 apiece alongside two other features.

The base plan is fill-and-sign only — you can sign a document yourself, but you cannot request a signature from someone else and track it. If that matters at all, the upgrade is close to a formality.

The free AI allowance is 1% of the paid one

Every Foxit account gets 20 AI credits a month — including the free PDF Reader, which is a real and unusual giveaway.

But the paid tier is 2,000 credits a month for €49.89 / $49.99 a year. That is 100× the free allowance, and it puts the “AI Assistant” bullet on the base plan in perspective: twenty credits is enough to evaluate the feature, not to use it. At the paid rate a credit costs about 0.21¢, which is cheap; the thing to understand is that the included allowance is a sample.

Note also that AI Assistant is not available on perpetual licences at all.

On the Adobe comparison, and on currency

Foxit’s headline claim is “44% lower cost per license compared to Adobe Acrobat”, comparing PDF Editor+ at $159.99/user/year against Adobe Acrobat Pro for Teams at $287.88/user/year. The arithmetic checks out precisely — that is a 44.4% difference. We have not independently verified Adobe’s current rate, so treat the Adobe number as Foxit’s claim rather than an established fact, but the calculation built on it is honest.

One thing to check for yourself: Foxit prices euros at near-parity with dollars — €159.59 against $159.99, €209.47 against $209.99, €49.89 against $49.99. Whenever the euro trades above parity, a European buyer is paying meaningfully more in real terms than an American one for the same licence. The storefront picks your currency by location, so the figures you see may differ from the ones quoted here.

A smaller thing, offered only as a reminder to treat vendor statistics loosely: the same site claims “660,000+ organizations” in one place and “640,000+ organizations” in two others.

What actually decides your cost

• Whether you need to request signatures, which is the entire PDF Editor to PDF Editor+ boundary.
• Whether you want mobile apps, also on Plus.
• Subscription versus perpetual, where the break-even is about 19 months and the trade is the whole cloud and AI platform.

Who Should Use Foxit PDF Editor

Foxit fits an organisation that needs Acrobat-class PDF work — real editing, OCR, forms, redaction, compliance-grade security — and does not want to pay Acrobat prices. The feature coverage is genuinely comparable on the tools most people use daily, and the ribbon-style interface is deliberately familiar so nobody needs retraining.

PDF Editor+ is the plan to buy. For €30 more a year than the base you get e-signature, mobile and Smart Redact, and the base plan’s fill-and-sign-only limitation will otherwise find you.

It fits especially well for public-sector and accessibility-sensitive buyers, given the published Section 508, VPAT and ADA compliance alongside SOC 2 Type 2 and GDPR.

The perpetual licence fits anyone who wants a desktop PDF editor, will keep it for two years or more, and genuinely does not want cloud storage, AI or e-signature. Be clear-eyed that you are buying version 14 and nothing after it.

It fits badly for anyone who needs true month-to-month billing, since neither option offers it. It also fits badly as a pure e-signature purchase — 150 envelopes a year is generous as an inclusion but is a cap, and a signature-led business should price Foxit eSign as its own product.

• DocuSign is the comparison to run if signatures are your actual requirement rather than a bonus — Foxit’s 150 included envelopes are excellent value but they are an inclusion, not a signature platform.

The software does what Acrobat does for most people, the price is roughly half, the trial is fourteen days without a card, and the pricing page is largely candid — including a FAQ that talks you out of the perpetual licence by listing exactly what it omits.

Buy PDF Editor+. The €29.92 premium over the base plan buys mobile apps, AI Smart Redact and 150 e-signature envelopes a year, and the base plan’s fill-and-sign-only limitation is the kind of restriction you discover at the worst moment. At roughly 20¢ an envelope, the e-signature allowance alone justifies the difference.

And take the instalments. Since both options commit you for twelve months regardless, paying monthly costs €1.85 more on the base plan — an almost meaningless amount for keeping your money longer. Which is the one thing to be clear about going in: the “Billed Monthly” button is not a monthly plan. Nothing about that is hidden, but the shop’s shortened labels make it easy to assume otherwise.

The perpetual licence is a real option and an honest one. Over three years it costs less than half the base subscription.
