Ahrefs Overview
What is Ahrefs?

Ahrefs is an SEO software that offers competitive analysis, provides keyword suggestions, shows keyword difficulty, and generates new keyword ideas from a single platform. Simply enter your URL and Ahrefs can check the quality of all of its backlink profiles. It’ll show what keywords are being targeted and which landing pages are delivering the most traffic. You also have the option to input your competitor’s URL to see the keywords that they are ranking for and how much traffic their target keywords bring them. Ahrefs claims to have the fastest backlink crawler in the world with a live backlink index of over 14 trillion links.

Ahrefs is also often used as SEO of choice in Indie Hacker and SEO tech stacks.

Ahrefs Expert Review

Ahrefs has the backlink data everyone benchmarks against, a genuinely useful free tier for your own site, and a per-seat model that surprises teams. Every paid plan, including the $449 Advanced tier, includes exactly one user. Extra seats cost $40 to $80 per month each, which means a three-person team pays substantially more than the headline suggests.

  • What it is: An SEO platform built on one of the largest independent web crawls, covering backlinks, keywords, rank tracking, site audits, and content research.
  • Best for: SEO specialists, agencies, and in-house teams where backlink and competitor data drive decisions.
  • Pricing: Free Webmaster Tools for your own verified site. Starter $29, Lite $129, Standard $249, Advanced $449, Enterprise $1,499 per month. Up to 17% off annually. Verified in July 2026.
  • The honest catch: One user per plan, and AI visibility indexes for ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews are sold as separate add-ons rather than included.

What Is Ahrefs?

Ahrefs’ homepage presenting its AI marketing platform powered by big data.

Ahrefs launched in 2010 as a backlink index and expanded outward from there. Its defining asset is infrastructure: Ahrefs runs one of the largest web crawlers outside the major search engines, and that crawl is why its backlink data is the reference point most SEOs cite when they disagree about link profiles.

The product range now covers Site Explorer for competitor and backlink analysis, Keywords Explorer, Rank Tracker, Site Audit, and Content Explorer. In 2026 it has added Brand Radar, which tracks what people and AI assistants say about a brand, alongside custom prompt tracking.

The independent ratings are strong: roughly 4.7 out of 5 on Capterra across 578 reviews and 4.5 on G2 across 667. Smaller samples than Semrush’s, but consistent, and data quality is the most frequently praised attribute.

How Ahrefs Works

  • Site Explorer. The core tool. Backlink profiles, referring domains, organic keywords, and traffic estimates for any domain. This is what most subscriptions are actually for.
  • Keywords Explorer. Keyword research with difficulty scoring and clickstream-informed volume estimates.
  • Site Audit. Technical crawling against 100+ checks, with crawl credits metered by plan from 100,000 to 1,500,000.
  • Rank Tracker. Daily position tracking, from 750 keywords on Lite to 5,000 on Advanced.
  • Brand Radar and tracked prompts. Monitoring what people and AI systems say about a brand, with 5, 10, and 20 tracked prompts by tier.
  • Ahrefs Webmaster Tools. Free for verified site owners, providing site audits and backlink data for your own properties.

Ahrefs Pricing

Five tiers, and two structural details matter more than the headline numbers. Figures verified in USD on Ahrefs’ pricing page in July 2026, on monthly billing.

Ahrefs’ pricing page showing Lite at $129, Standard at $249, and Advanced at $449 per month, each including one user with additional users at $40, $60, and $80 per month, alongside a tooltip noting that AI visibility indexes are available as separate add-ons.

Plan Monthly Projects Tracked keywords Historical data Extra users
Webmaster Tools Free Your verified sites — — —
Starter $29 Limited Limited — —
Lite $129 5 750 6 months +2 at $40/mo each
Standard $249 20 2,000 2 years +5 at $60/mo each
Advanced $449 50 5,000 5 years +10 at $80/mo each
Enterprise $1,499 Custom Custom Unlimited Custom

The two things that change your real cost:

  • Every plan includes one user. Not one per tier band, one full stop, including the $449 Advanced plan. A three-person team on Standard pays $249 plus two seats at $60, which is $369 per month, roughly 48% above the sticker price. This is the single most common surprise in Ahrefs budgeting.
  • AI visibility is an add-on, not an inclusion. Ahrefs’ own tooltip states that the web visibility index starts at Standard, and that AI visibility indexes for Google AI mode, AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity are available as separate add-ons. That is a materially different model from Semrush, which bundles AI tracking into its $199 Starter tier, and from Surfer, which includes it on every paid plan. If AI search visibility is a priority, compare total cost rather than plan price.

Other details worth knowing:

  • Historical data scales sharply. Six months on Lite against five years on Advanced. For competitive analysis over time, this often forces the upgrade more than keyword limits do.
  • Credits per user differ. 1,000 credits per user on Lite, unlimited on Standard and above, which is an underrated reason Lite frustrates heavy users.
  • Annual billing saves up to 17%.
  • Enterprise requires an annual commitment at $1,499 per month.

Who Should Use Ahrefs

  • SEO specialists and consultants. The clearest case. Backlink data quality is the reason this tool exists and the reason people pay for it.
  • Agencies doing competitive analysis. Site Explorer on competitor domains is the most-used workflow in practice, and 20 or 50 projects supports client work.
  • Anyone with a site and no budget. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is genuinely useful rather than a crippled upsell, running the same site audit checks as the paid product against your own verified properties.
  • Link-building teams. No competitor’s index is more widely trusted for this specific job.

It fits poorly for solo bloggers who need more than their own site’s data, since there is no free competitor research, for teams of three or more on a budget, given per-seat pricing, and for content optimization specifically, where Surfer does that job better and far cheaper.

Honest Pros and Cons

Strengths

  • The best backlink index. The most consistently praised aspect, and the industry reference point.
  • A genuinely valuable free tier. Webmaster Tools gives real site audit and backlink data for verified sites, running the same checks as the paid product.
  • Clean, learnable interface. Widely considered easier to navigate than Semrush’s broader dashboard.
  • Excellent ratings. 4.7 on Capterra and 4.5 on G2, with data quality the recurring theme.
  • Deep historical data at the top tiers. Five years on Advanced supports genuine trend analysis.
  • Independent crawl infrastructure. Ahrefs owns its data pipeline rather than licensing it, which is why the index holds up.

Limitations

  • One user per plan. The defining cost issue. Extra seats at $40 to $80 per month push team pricing well above the headline.
  • AI visibility costs extra. Sold as add-ons while key competitors bundle it, which makes plan-price comparisons misleading.
  • No free competitor research. The free tier covers only sites you own, unlike Semrush’s limited but general free plan.
  • Expensive at entry. $129 for Lite with 6 months of history and 1,000 credits per user is restrictive for the price.
  • Narrower than Semrush. No advertising research, weaker local SEO, and less content tooling.
  • Credit limits on Lite. 1,000 credits per user constrains real research work at the tier most small buyers start on.

Ahrefs Alternatives and How It Compares

  • Semrush is broader, covering advertising and local SEO, and bundles AI visibility from its $199 tier. Now owned by Adobe following the 2026 acquisition.
  • Surfer SEO does on-page content optimization better and much cheaper, with no backlink data. A complement rather than a substitute.
  • Writesonic competes on AI search visibility specifically, from $79 per month.
  • Google Search Console is free and authoritative for your own site’s performance, and Ahrefs Webmaster Tools complements it rather than replacing it.
  • Ubersuggest and Mangools are considerably cheaper for small sites, with smaller indexes and less reliable data.

For a broader survey see our guide to the best SEO software.

The Verdict

Ahrefs remains the tool to beat on backlink and competitor data, and the 4.7 Capterra rating reflects that reputation being earned rather than inherited. If link building or competitive analysis drives your SEO work, the data quality justifies the price, and Site Explorer alone is worth the subscription for most specialists.

Budget for seats, not the plan. One user on every tier, including the $449 Advanced plan, is the detail that catches teams out, and extra seats at $40 to $80 per month can add half again to your bill. Work out your real headcount before comparing Ahrefs against Semrush, because the sticker prices are not comparable once seats are included.

Then check how you intend to handle AI search visibility. Ahrefs sells those indexes as add-ons while Semrush bundles them from $199 and Surfer includes them on every paid plan. That is a legitimate choice on Ahrefs’ part, and it means the tool that looks cheapest on plan price may not be once you add what you actually need. If your budget is tight and you only need data on your own site, start with the free Webmaster Tools, which is a genuinely good product rather than a lead magnet.

FAQ

How much does Ahrefs cost in 2026?

Lite is $129 per month, Standard $249, Advanced $449, and Enterprise $1,499 with an annual commitment. A limited Starter plan is $29. Paying annually saves up to 17%. Critically, every plan includes only one user, with additional seats at $40 per month on Lite, $60 on Standard, and $80 on Advanced.

Does Ahrefs include AI visibility tracking?

Partially, and less than competitors. Plans include a number of tracked prompts, from 5 on Lite to 20 on Advanced, and Brand Radar for brand monitoring. But Ahrefs’ own pricing page states that the web visibility index starts on the Standard plan and that AI visibility indexes for Google AI mode, AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity are separate add-ons. Semrush bundles comparable tracking from its $199 tier.

Is Ahrefs Webmaster Tools actually free?

Yes, and it is unusually generous. Verified site owners get site audits running the same 100+ checks as the paid product, plus backlink data from Ahrefs’ main index, at no cost. The limitation is scope rather than depth: it covers only sites you own and verify, so competitor research and keyword exploration still require a paid plan.

Is Ahrefs better than Semrush?

They lead in different areas. Ahrefs is generally regarded as stronger on backlink data and simpler to navigate. Semrush is broader, adding advertising research, local SEO, and content tools, and it bundles AI search visibility that Ahrefs charges extra for. Specialists focused on links and rankings tend to prefer Ahrefs; teams needing one platform for everything tend to choose Semrush.

What is Ahrefs best for?

Backlink analysis and competitor research, where its independently built crawl produces the data most SEO professionals treat as the benchmark. It is best suited to specialists and agencies rather than casual users, and its per-seat pricing means it works out most economical for individuals and small, senior teams.

"Most Authentic & Accurate Analytics Tool In Recent Times"
What do you like best about Ahrefs?

Ahrefs is an online and revolutionary analytics tool that holds different tools such as Link building, Competitors Keyword research & analysis, Track Ranking, Site Audit, and many more. Ahref outcomes solve all your SEO queries with a simple audit or run. I am a frequent user of Ahref and especially keyword Researching is most authentic and powerful. To find the top keywords and pages of a specific website that are ranking on search engines Ahref is the best choice. Backlinks are an important factor in improving the site so Ahref also provides insight into referring domains.

What do you dislike about Ahrefs?

The tool has a little Complex Interface for beginners they need some training before using it. There are multiple filters that are not working properly like referring domains. One of the cons of Ahref is less Internal link opportunities. It can not show 100 % accurate stats but considered the most accurate tool in recent times. I personally think that Domain Rating in Ahref is not exactly matters in ranking because this rating only belongs to this tool, not for google or bing.

What problems is Ahrefs solving and how is that benefiting you?

The tool is a complete problem-solving package in terms of analytics and insights. I usually use this tool for keyword research from competitor's websites to compete in search engines like google. It provides me all the details and insights of the online websites as well as domain audits for the sake of creating room for improvement. Well, I loved it because it helps me a lot to rank my content on search engines.

"Very comprehensive SEO toolkit"
What do you like best about Ahrefs?

I'm yet to see an SEO tool offer the level of depth and detail offered by Ahrefs. The dashboards are easy-to-understand despite being packed with information.

What do you dislike about Ahrefs?

I don't feel like I'm making full use of all of the features that are available, so surfacing some of the insights I'm missing would be super useful. So when I log in, I can be told exactly what needs acting on – such as pages will slow load times, pages that have significantly dropped in search visibility, or high authority backlinks we have gained or lost.

What problems is Ahrefs solving and how is that benefiting you?

Tracking keyword rankings. Knowing what keywords we're getting getting traffic for for but not tracking – great for doing further on-site optimisation or finding new content we could be writing. Getting a quick understanding on how algorithm updates have impacted our site. Competitor auditing and benchmarking.

What do you like best about Ahrefs?

Ahrefs has consistently provided better site metric data and keyword data than any other competitor i've tried (SEMRUSH, etc.). I have used this tool daily for 5 years and couldn't imagine my workflow without it.

What do you dislike about Ahrefs?

There really isn't much to say here. Maybe that I wish there was more robust youtube keyword data.

What problems is Ahrefs solving and how is that benefiting you?

I use Ahrefs to monitor SEO and PPC keywords for sites I manage. I also use it for competitor research (how do they get their links and traffic).

"Checking your Website's health and backlinks"
What do you like best about Ahrefs?

I love that Ahrefs is one of the best Backlink Crawlers i have ever used. They crawl backlinks every 15 mins allows you to see if new backlinks are being linked back to your website fast. I also love how they rank your website telling you how credible it is from a scale of 1 to 100.

What do you dislike about Ahrefs?

I specifically use Ahrefs for backlink building and analyzing and have no issues with it.

What problems is Ahrefs solving and how is that benefiting you?

With Ahrefs, I can make sure that the backlinks I'm building are being crawled. For other SEO tools, they don't report the backlink for months until it gets crawled. However with Ahrefs, it gets crawled within the week. It shows me the backlink, the origin, the anchor tag an where it's linking to. This allows me to know it's been done properly and I don't have to worry about contacting a webmaster to fix it.

"Amazing tool for SEO, from beginners to advanced users"
What do you like best about Ahrefs?

I've triet a lot of SEO tools, and Ahrefs consistently comes out on top. It's super easy to use, and the dashboard is the best I've used in terms of showing keyword difficulty, search volume, and suggested keywords. What makes Ahrefs stand out is the additional features. It gives you options to look at suggested keywords, search for content gaps, look at competitor content ranks and you can even do a site audit.

What do you dislike about Ahrefs?

The one drawback of Ahrefs is the price. The lowest priced package runs at $99 a month ($82 if you pay for the full year). You even have to pay for a trial just to test the product out! Okay, it's worth it. But it's definitely one of those tools you have to think hard about investing in because of the price tag.

What problems is Ahrefs solving and how is that benefiting you?

For everything SEO related, Ahrefs gives the answer. I'm able to come up with content ideas, keyword suggestions, and even prove to clients how much a piece of organic content is worth (it shows how much a piece woulf cost if you were paying for the keywords instead of ranking for them organically, I love this feature!)

"Great for Keyword Analysis & Backlink Information"
What do you like best about Ahrefs?

Ahrefs gives you a very quick, broad overview of your client's backlinks and a rough idea of what you are ranking for. This is great to use when you're first getting acquainted with a client, giving you an understanding of what link building or natural link building they were involved with in the past. I would really recommend this tool if you are looking to check your client daily, weekly or monthly to ensure their website is strong and won't get penalised by Google. It's very easy to use and the support is really good too.

What do you dislike about Ahrefs?

I wouldn't say that the keyword tool is the most accurate of the tools that I've used. They update the keywords quite sporadically, so you don't always know exactly what you're ranking for and where. I would recommend other keyword tracking tools that update daily so that you have an accurate understanding of your client's keywords. You can track keywords, but again, I feel that there are other tools that are better for this type of thing.

What problems is Ahrefs solving and how is that benefiting you?

We're using Ahrefs predominantly for auditing our clients backlink profiles. Google are still penalising websites for their backlink profiles, so it's important to have an up to date view of what backlinks they have and where they're coming from. This is invaluable, especially with clients who have been penalised and if they don't know why. We can then put together a list of 'toxic' domains, and then put these into a disavow file to get them back to where they need to be.

"Trustworthy tool which ticks lots of boxes"
What do you like best about Ahrefs?

Ahrefs has been a must have in my toolkit for many years. I find the interface very easy to use and not cluttered even though the tool has many features. It allows me to keep and store historic data on my clients and potential clients plus their competitors which is infinitely useful for the job i need to do and saves manual admin. Another thing I like about Ahrefs is that it always feels fresh and new. I feel like they have their eye on the ball of the industry and are always one step ahead with new features and developments. This may sound geeky but one of the best things about getting a new tool is playing with all of the features and testing new insights. With ahrefs you get this time and time again as exciting new developments are always being added. It's also got its own metric for scoring the quality of sites and allows me to see links coming in and dropping off every day which helps with ensuring the health of my clients website. The content gap analysis and rank trackers ensure that ahrefs is a great all-rounder to have in your toolkit and can provide far reaching benefits for multiple areas of an agency.

What do you dislike about Ahrefs?

There are some features which I use less such as rank tracking as i dont think it's as good as the rank tracking tool I use. The content explorer is useful but it feels a little slow and i think there are other features which could be added to make my job easier such as google alerts and the social sharing aspect is often not accurate in its reporting. If i dig around on twitter i can find tweets about my articles which ahrefs hasn't picked up. The site explorer, while a useful tool, is a bit slow and cumbersome at times but it's not the reason why i use Ahrefs so i'm not particularly concerned by this at all.

What problems is Ahrefs solving and how is that benefiting you?

The problems i'm solving is that i couldn't quantify the work i'm doing for clients. I work in link acquisition and this tool allows me to tell clients where, when and how their backlinks have come about. The DR score also lets me inform clients that the work i have done for them is good quality and their website is safe. The benefits in terms of sales has been great too as I can quickly and confidently get a birds eye view of a websites link profile from ahrefs without having to do hours of pre-sales research when scoping out a potential new client.

"Best tool for Competition research and link Building"
What do you like best about Ahrefs?

Ahrefs is a best tool for doing competitor research. The best thing about Ahrefs is that it is a single platform on which you can do multiple things like keyword research, content research and generate site audit reports. If you are using Ahrefs then you don't have to use anything else.

What do you dislike about Ahrefs?

The thing which I don't like in Ahrefs is Keyword difficulty reports when you are doing keyword research in Ahrefs then you have to select a specific country to know the result. Ahrefs only shows the global keyword volume not the difficulty. It only shows the difficulty level of the selected region.

What problems is Ahrefs solving and how is that benefiting you?

We are using Ahrefs for competition research on the basis of which we are making our link building strategy. It is very beneficial for marketers by using this tool link building is quite easy. Writers can write quality articles.

"Great marketing tool"
What do you like best about Ahrefs?

I'm in love with Ahrefs. It is the first tool I log into every day. There are so many good things about it but what's best for me is that I can do so many things in one place: track growth, discover content ideas, compare progress against competitors, see any issues with my website.

What do you dislike about Ahrefs?

I don't think it is a very intuitive tool for new users or users who have switched from another tool. For instance, I don't find it very easy to find historical data for my site.

What problems is Ahrefs solving and how is that benefiting you?

Right now, the best benefit for me is being able to track progress with targeted keywords.

"Great SEO tool, I use it daily for my projects!"
What do you like best about Ahrefs?

My favorite tool is the backlink profile on Ahrefs, it's easy to use and can help you find hundreds of backlinking opportunities. You can navigate through new backlinks, lost ones and even broken ones as well!

What do you dislike about Ahrefs?

The only downside is that it is a bit pricey and the free trial they offer is pretty limited to the amount of data that is shown to you. Besides that I don't have any other downsides when it comes to using Ahrefs.

What problems is Ahrefs solving and how is that benefiting you?

I've learned how to do a backlink analysis on my competitors and look for potential backlinking opportunities. This has helped me identify some websites that could be good candidates for my company to link out to.

"Ahrefs is the Definitive SEM and SEO Tool"
What do you like best about Ahrefs?

Ahrefs is incredibly comprehensive and straight forward. From keyword discovery to site audits I use ahrefs for all my SEO needs. It's the first SEO program I was introduced to when starting me SEM management career and has proven to be the best time and time again. I've used their competitors liker moz, SEM rush, and a couple other services- none of which have come close to stacking up.

What do you dislike about Ahrefs?

I think they could go a long way when it comes to updating the site audit tool. I think the reporting could be a bit more comprehensive when reporting the locations of issues and their in-links. Also I think you should be able to export all the results of a site audit an have them in a single spreadsheet.

What problems is Ahrefs solving and how is that benefiting you?

Mainly keyword research, site audits, backlink analysis, and competitor research.

"Dynamic SEO & Content Tool with great interface"
What do you like best about Ahrefs?

I think the greatest advantage of using this tool compared to others is that it provides the user the ability to dive deeper into data points without being taken into new tabs/screens -- you can quickly glean deep insights in an efficient way.

What do you dislike about Ahrefs?

I would prefer if Ahrefs also used domain authority as a metric -- it's more universally used and prevents me from being able to use the tool singularly without cross-referencing information from other third-party tools

What problems is Ahrefs solving and how is that benefiting you?

Keyword research and content mapping are more easily done with Ahrefs -- great filtering capabilities and the ability to see entire SERP's for a keyword with a click to enable both quantitative and qualitative analysis.

"The best link analysis tool in the game"
What do you like best about Ahrefs?

Ahrefs boasts the best link database among any system out there. It does most everything -- link monitoring, alerts, calculated metrics, the richest clickstream blend out there, and much more. Its UI is cluttered in a good way and the company has quick and polite support. And Tim Soulo -- the public face of Ahrefs -- has done a ton of good for the SEO community.

What do you dislike about Ahrefs?

On-site analysis just doesn't work via a SaaS UI in my point of view. Ahrefs can't yet hold a candle to the rote power and customizability of Screaming Frog or Sitebulb when it comes to drawing metrics from source code. As my consultancy grew, price no longer became an issue with Ahrefs -- but I do understand why many solo practitioners find it steep. The support for technical SEO metrics are nigh non-existent, and there are no "spam score" analyses, which is a big way that competitors still beat Ahrefs.

What problems is Ahrefs solving and how is that benefiting you?

Most of my SEO research starts with Ahrefs. My subscription more than pays itself off every month.
