Corel VideoStudio Pro Expert Review

Corel VideoStudio Pro costs $79.99, and the edition above it can be had for $19.99. That is not a sale I found on a coupon site — both figures come out of the price feed Corel’s own website loads to render its buy buttons. VideoStudio Ultimate lists at $99.99 with a standing 80%-off code attached to it in that feed; VideoStudio Pro lists at $79.99 with no code attached at all. Buy the cheaper product and you pay four times as much. That inversion is the single most useful thing to know about this software, and it is not visible anywhere on the pages you would normally read. The second most useful thing: the current version is VideoStudio 2023, and it has been the current version for three years.

  • What it is: A consumer and prosumer video editor for Windows, sold as a one-time perpetual licence.
  • Best for: Hobbyists and small businesses who want to own an editor outright rather than rent one.
  • Pricing: $79.99 Pro, $99.99 Ultimate list — Ultimate as low as $19.99 with Corel’s own code. Verified August 2026.
  • The honest catch: The latest release is still the 2023 version, and Corel’s own Pricing link 404s.

What Is Corel VideoStudio Pro?

VideoStudio is a timeline video editor for Windows, aimed squarely between phone apps and professional NLEs. It has been around since the 1990s, passed through Ulead to Corel, and today lives on its own domain — videostudiopro.com — rather than on corel.com, where it appears only as a link out from the product menu.

It ships in two consumer editions plus bundles:

  • VideoStudio Pro — the core editor: multi-track timeline, transitions, titles, motion tracking, colour grading, split-screen templates, and a stock library.
  • VideoStudio Ultimate — everything in Pro plus the third-party effect packs that most people actually buy it for, principally NewBlue and proDAD plug-in collections.
  • Photo Video Bundle Pro / Ultimate — VideoStudio packaged with PaintShop Pro, Corel’s photo editor.
  • VideoStudio Business & Education — the same software under a volume licence.

The proposition is simple and increasingly rare: you buy it once and it is yours. No monthly fee, no cloud account holding your project files hostage, no losing access to your own edits when a card expires. In a category where Adobe, DaVinci and Camtasia have all pushed hard toward subscription or annual maintenance, a genuine perpetual licence has real value for someone editing a few videos a year.

This listing has no user reviews on Findstack, so unlike most reviews in this series there is no crowd verdict to weigh against the vendor’s claims. Everything below rests on Corel’s own published data.

How Corel VideoStudio Pricing Works

Corel does not print prices in its page HTML. The site loads a JSON price feed — one block per locale, covering 28 currencies — and the buy buttons render from it in the browser. That feed is what the figures here come from, and it is more informative than the marketing pages, because it carries not just the list price but every promotional code attached to each SKU.

Corel VideoStudio lowest published US prices: Ultimate 2023 $19.99, Ultimate 2022 $34.99, Ultimate upgrade $49.99, Photo Video Bundle Ultimate $79.99, Pro 2023 $79.99

Product List Discounted Code in the feed Saving
VideoStudio Pro 2023 $79.99 none
VideoStudio Ultimate 2023 $99.99 $19.99 2LALN 80%
VideoStudio Pro 2023, upgrade $79.99 $59.99 standard sale 25%
VideoStudio Ultimate 2023, upgrade $99.99 $79.99 → $49.99 2F1B7, YKU22 20% → 50%
VideoStudio Ultimate 2022 $99.99 $34.99 AWVPN 65%
Photo Video Bundle Pro $159.99 $109.99 standard sale 30%
Photo Video Bundle Ultimate $199.99 $139.99 → $79.99 2F1B7, Y5ACB 30% → 60%

Read that table from the bottom up and the retail logic falls apart. The Photo Video Bundle Ultimate — VideoStudio Ultimate plus PaintShop Pro — reaches $79.99, exactly what VideoStudio Pro alone costs at list. Ultimate on its own reaches $19.99. There is no configuration in which buying Pro at its list price is the rational choice, and Pro is the edition this listing is named after.

(A necessary caveat: I could confirm these codes and prices sit in Corel’s live price feed — fetched twice, byte-identical — but the store checkout at store.videostudiopro.com is behind a Cloudflare challenge that I could not pass, so I cannot confirm the codes still redeem. Treat them as published, not as guaranteed. They cost nothing to try.)

What actually decides your cost

1. Which edition you start from. Ultimate is the cheaper entry point at published promotional prices, and it is also the edition with the plug-in packs. Unless you have a reason to want fewer features for more money, start there.

2. Whether you qualify as an upgrade. Owning any previous VideoStudio version moves you onto the upgrade SKUs, which run $59.99 for Pro and as low as $49.99 for Ultimate. Corel does not check this at purchase in any way I could verify from outside — but the SKUs are separate products, so buy the right one.

3. Whether you should be on a business licence at all. This is the finding most likely to save a real business money:

VideoStudio per-seat pricing: consumer Ultimate $99.99, consumer Pro $79.99, business 1-4 seats $71.99, 5-24 seats $63.99, alternate business SKU $56.99

Licence Per seat
Consumer Ultimate $99.99
Consumer Pro $79.99
Business & Education, 1–4 seats $71.99
Business & Education, 5–24 seats $63.99
Business & Education, alternate SKU $56.99

The volume licence starts at one seat and undercuts the consumer price immediately. A single-seat business licence is $71.99 against $79.99 retail for Pro — cheaper before you have added a second person. Nothing on the consumer pages points this out; the Business & Education line sits in a separate part of the menu with a “Learn more” link rather than a price.

4. Which year you buy. VideoStudio Ultimate 2022 is still on sale at $34.99 with its own code, alongside the 2023 release at $19.99. When the older version costs more than the newer one, the version numbers have stopped meaning much.

Who Should Use Corel VideoStudio Pro

A good fit if you are:

  • A hobbyist or family editor who makes a handful of videos a year and resents paying monthly for the privilege. At $19.99 for Ultimate, the software costs less than two months of most subscription editors.
  • A small business or classroom needing several seats of a competent editor without a per-user recurring bill — the volume licence at $63.99 a seat is genuinely inexpensive.
  • Someone who wants effects packs included. The NewBlue and proDAD collections in Ultimate are the real value, and they are why Ultimate rather than Pro is the edition worth discussing.
  • On Windows, editing standard consumer formats, without a colour-managed or collaborative workflow.

A poor fit if you are:

  • On macOS or Linux — VideoStudio is Windows-only.
  • Doing professional or client work. A three-year-old release is a liability when codecs, camera formats and OS versions keep moving.
  • Editing collaboratively, or needing proxy workflows, advanced colour management or serious audio post.
  • Expecting ongoing development. There is no evidence of a 2024, 2025 or 2026 release.

Honest Pros and Cons

Pros

  • A real perpetual licence. Buy once, own it. No renewal, no lockout, no subscription creep.
  • Very low effective prices. $19.99 for Ultimate is remarkable for a full timeline editor with third-party effect packs.
  • Volume licensing that starts at one seat and beats the consumer price straight away.
  • Bundled effects that are not filler. NewBlue and proDAD are credible third-party suites, not house-brand padding.
  • A free trial is offered on every edition.
  • The price feed is transparent if you go looking — 28 locales, every SKU, every code, no dark patterns in the data itself.

Cons

  • The pricing is inverted. Pro at $79.99 is a worse deal than Ultimate at $19.99, and nothing on the site says so.
  • The current release is VideoStudio 2023. Three years without a version bump, in a category where format support ages badly.
  • Corel’s own “Pricing” navigation link 404s. The href in the site’s own menu — /en/pricing/?nav=prc — returns a 404 page. A buyer clicking Pricing on a software vendor’s website gets an error.
  • The list prices are close to fictional. Between standing codes and reference “was” figures, the sticker exists mainly to make the discount look large.
  • No Findstack user reviews, so no independent check on how it performs in practice.
  • Windows only.
  • The product has drifted off corel.com onto its own domain, which is rarely a sign of investment.

Corel VideoStudio Alternatives and How It Compares

VideoStudio’s real competition is not other paid editors — it is the excellent free ones.

  • DaVinci Resolve — the elephant. Free, cross-platform, and vastly more capable at colour and audio. If you can tolerate the learning curve, it beats VideoStudio at every price point including this one. VideoStudio’s answer is that it is far easier to learn.
  • Adobe Premiere Pro — the industry default, subscription-only. A different budget and a different job; relevant only if you need professional-grade collaboration and format support.
  • CyberLink PowerDirector 365 — the sharpest contrast in the category: near-identical consumer positioning, sold as an annual subscription rather than outright. Price the two over three years before deciding which model suits you.
  • Wondershare Filmora — the closest like-for-like consumer editor, and the most direct comparison to price against VideoStudio Ultimate.
  • Movavi Video Editor — another consumer-tier editor in the same bracket, also sold as a one-time purchase.

The honest positioning: VideoStudio wins on price and ease, loses on currency and capability. At $19.99 that trade is easy to accept. At $79.99 for Pro it is not, which is precisely the purchase the pricing page steers you toward.

The Verdict

Buy the edition Corel prices badly, and VideoStudio is a bargain. Buy the one this listing is named after, and it is not.

Everything good about VideoStudio is real. It is a capable, approachable Windows editor with genuine third-party effects, sold outright at a time when almost nobody sells software outright. For a hobbyist making holiday videos or a school kitting out a lab, $19.99 to $63.99 a seat with no renewal is difficult to argue with, and the free trial removes the risk of finding out you dislike it.

What holds it back is the sense of a product being harvested rather than developed. The 2023 release is still the current one. The 2022 release is still for sale, at a higher price. The pricing page in the site’s own navigation returns a 404. The list prices bear no relationship to what anything actually sells for, and the cheaper edition costs four times more than the dearer one. None of that is dishonest, exactly — the feed is public and the codes are Corel’s own — but it is the shape of a catalogue on autopilot.

Buy it if you want to own an easy Windows editor for a hobby, and buy Ultimate, not Pro.

Buy the business licence if you need more than zero seats for a business — it is cheaper than retail from the first one.

Look at DaVinci Resolve first if your budget is zero and your patience is not, and at Filmora if you want the same trade VideoStudio offers from a vendor still shipping releases.

FAQ

How much does Corel VideoStudio Pro cost? VideoStudio Pro 2023 lists at $79.99 and VideoStudio Ultimate 2023 at $99.99, both one-time perpetual licences with no subscription. Corel’s own price feed attaches an 80%-off code to Ultimate that brings it to $19.99, and none to Pro — so Ultimate is usually the cheaper purchase despite being the more expensive product.

Is VideoStudio a subscription? No. Every consumer SKU is a perpetual licence: you pay once and keep the version you bought indefinitely. There is no renewal, no maintenance fee, and no cloud dependency for access. Upgrading to a future release, if one appears, would be a separate purchase.

What is the difference between VideoStudio Pro and Ultimate? Ultimate is Pro plus bundled third-party effects collections, principally NewBlue and proDAD. The core editor is the same. Given the pricing above, there is little reason to choose Pro over Ultimate on cost grounds.

Is Corel VideoStudio still being updated? The current release is VideoStudio 2023, and it has been for three years — there is no 2024, 2025 or 2026 version, and the product site’s own footer carries a 2023 copyright. The software still works, but treat it as a stable product rather than an actively developed one, and check that it supports your camera’s formats before buying.

Does VideoStudio run on Mac? No. VideoStudio is Windows-only. Mac users looking for a comparable one-time-purchase editor should look at Filmora or Movavi, or at DaVinci Resolve’s free tier.
