BigCommerce Enterprise Expert Review

BigCommerce’s Scale plan is described as being for “fast-growing businesses with $1M in annual sales”, costs $299 a month, and charges 0.9% on GMV above $400,000 a year. Run the arithmetic on exactly that business and the overage comes to $4,500 against a $3,588 subscription — the metered portion is the larger half. Enterprise proper (Performance) starts at $1,499 a month, and the threshold that moves you between plans is not your sales figure but BigCommerce’s own definition of it.

  • What it is: An ecommerce platform for high-volume and B2B merchants, with multi-storefront and headless options.
  • Best for: Merchants who model the overage before choosing, not after.
  • Pricing: Core $29, Growth $79, Scale $299 per month billed annually; Performance from $1,499. Verified July 2026.
  • The honest catch: Plans auto-upgrade when you cross a threshold.

What Is BigCommerce Enterprise?

BigCommerce is an ecommerce platform pitched at larger merchants: custom catalogues, advanced SEO, B2B commerce, multi-storefront, headless builds, international selling and 1,200-plus apps. The enterprise tier is branded Performance, and unlike the three tiers beneath it, it is contracted and quoted.

BigCommerce’s pricing page showing Core at $29, Growth at $79, Scale at $299 a month billed annually, and Performance from $1,499.

Below it sit Core, Growth and Scale — no contracts, cancellable any time, with billing stopping immediately.

How BigCommerce Works

  • GMV thresholds set your plan, not features.
  • Plans auto-upgrade when you exceed them.
  • Scale adds 0.9% overage above its cap.
  • GMV means gross order value minus 10%.
  • Taxes and shipping count toward the threshold.
  • Annual billing saves 25%, accurately.

BigCommerce Pricing

Captured from BigCommerce’s pricing page in July 2026 in US dollars, reading both billing toggles and the pricing FAQ.

Plan Monthly Annual Saving Threshold Above the cap
Core $39 $29 25.6% Up to $30K TTM GMV Auto-upgrades to Growth
Growth $105 $79 24.8% Up to $100K TTM GMV Auto-upgrades to Scale
Scale $399 $299 25.1% $33,333/month GMV 0.9% on GMV above cap
Performance from $1,499 Custom Custom terms
On Scale, a business with… GMV Overage Subscription Total
$400K annual sales $360K $0 $3,588 $3,588
$600K annual sales $540K $1,260 $3,588 $4,848
$1M annual sales $900K $4,500 $3,588 $8,088
$2M annual sales $1.8M $12,600 $3,588 $16,188

Bar chart of BigCommerce Scale’s total annual cost by sales level: $3,588 at $400K, $4,848 at $600K, $8,088 at $1M and $16,188 at $2M.

What actually decides your cost:

  • On the business Scale is marketed to, overage is the bigger line item. The card says “fast-growing businesses with $1M in annual sales” and charges 0.9% on GMV above $33,333 a month — $400,000 a year. A merchant at $1M in sales has roughly $900,000 of GMV, so $500,000 sits above the cap: $4,500 in overage against $3,588 of subscription. Anyone comparing Scale’s $299 against a competitor’s flat fee is comparing the smaller half of the bill.
  • GMV is not your sales figure, and the definition cuts both ways. BigCommerce’s FAQ: “BigCommerce uses GMV, your gross order value after a 10% reduction, to evaluate plan thresholds.” That 10% haircut works in your favour — a $30K threshold means about $33,333 of gross orders. But the same FAQ says eligible sales include “product price (net of any discounts), as well as taxes and shipping”, plus social commerce from Pinterest, Facebook and Twitter and marketplace sales from eBay and Amazon. Tax and shipping inflate the number; the 10% reduction deflates it. Model both.
  • You do not choose to upgrade — it happens. “As your sales grow and exceed your plan’s threshold… you’ll be notified and automatically upgraded to the next plan.” Core moves to Growth, Growth to Scale. On Scale and Performance there is no jump: “a continuous overage rate applies only to orders above your plan’s limit.” Predictable, but not optional, and calculated on a trailing twelve months — so one strong quarter raises your plan for the following year.
  • Scale stays cheaper than Performance’s floor for a long time. Performance starts at $1,499 a month, or $17,988 a year. On Scale, a $2M-sales merchant pays about $16,188 all-in. So the arithmetic favours staying on Scale well past the “$1M+” framing on the Performance card — the reason to move up is contracted service levels and a dedicated CSM, not price.
  • The 25% annual discount is accurate on all three self-serve plans. $39 to $29 is 25.6%, $105 to $79 is 24.8%, and $399 to $299 is 25.1%. Every figure lands on or fractionally around the advertised 25%.
  • No contracts below Performance, and cancellation is immediate. “Our Core, Growth, and Scale plans don’t require a contract, and you can cancel at any time in the control panel. If you do, we’ll stop billing you immediately.” Contracts apply only to Performance, which BigCommerce frames as a service-level commitment rather than a lock-in.

Who Should Use BigCommerce Enterprise

  • Merchants who model total cost. The clearest case — the overage rate matters more than the sticker price.
  • B2B and multi-storefront sellers. Both are core to the platform rather than add-ons.
  • Headless builds. A documented API-first path, with Makeswift for the front end.
  • High-volume merchants wanting SLAs. Performance adds contracts and a dedicated CSM.

It fits poorly for merchants who compare only monthly fees; for businesses with lumpy revenue, given the trailing-twelve-month calculation; and for anyone assuming $1M in sales means Performance, when Scale is cheaper to roughly $2M.

Honest Pros and Cons

Strengths

  • The overage rate is published — 0.9%, stated on the card.
  • No contracts on Core, Growth or Scale.
  • Billing stops immediately on cancellation.
  • Zero payment fees with embedded providers.
  • A 25% annual discount that checks out.
  • Growth continues without hard limits on Scale and above.

Limitations

  • Overage can exceed the subscription on Scale.
  • GMV is a defined term, not your sales figure.
  • Taxes and shipping count toward thresholds.
  • Upgrades are automatic, not elective.
  • Trailing 12-month windows make one good quarter costly.
  • Performance pricing is quoted, from $1,499.

BigCommerce Alternatives and How It Compares

  • Shopify is the dominant comparison, with transaction fees unless you use Shopify Payments.
  • Ecwid charges no transaction fees and bolts onto an existing site.
  • WooCommerce is the self-hosted route, with hosting as the real cost.
  • Wix and Squarespace target smaller merchants.

The Verdict

BigCommerce is a credible enterprise platform — B2B commerce, multi-storefront, headless builds and international selling are first-class parts of the product rather than bolt-ons, and it charges no payment fees when you use an embedded provider. It also handles growth in a way that avoids the worst behaviour in this category: above Scale there are no hard limits or blocked orders, just “a continuous overage rate… only to orders above your plan’s limit.”

The number to model is that overage, because on the plan BigCommerce markets at a million dollars of sales, it is the larger part of the bill. Scale costs $299 a month and charges 0.9% on GMV above $400,000 a year. A merchant doing $1M in sales carries roughly $900,000 of GMV, so half a million sits above the cap: $4,500 of overage on top of $3,588 of subscription — $8,088 all in. Comparing Scale’s $299 against a rival’s flat monthly fee compares the smaller half of the total.

Two definitional points make that model harder than it looks, and they pull in opposite directions. GMV is “gross order value after a 10% reduction”, which gives you about 11% more headroom than the headline threshold suggests. But eligible sales include taxes and shipping — plus social commerce and eBay and Amazon orders — which inflates the figure you are measured on. Work out both effects against your own order mix before assuming which plan you land in, remembering that the plan changes itself once you cross a line, on a trailing twelve-month basis.

One useful conclusion falls out of the arithmetic. Performance starts at $1,499 a month — $17,988 a year — while a $2M-sales merchant on Scale pays roughly $16,188. So despite Performance being labelled for “$1M+ in annual sales”, Scale remains the cheaper option well past $2M. Move up for the contracted service levels and the dedicated success manager, which is what Performance actually sells; do not move up expecting to save money.

FAQ

How much does BigCommerce cost?

In US dollars captured July 2026: Core is $29 a month billed annually ($39 monthly), Growth $79 ($105) and Scale $299 ($399). Performance — the enterprise tier — is custom-priced starting at $1,499 a month billed annually. Core, Growth and Scale require no contract and can be cancelled at any time, with billing stopping immediately.

What is BigCommerce’s overage charge?

Scale charges 0.9% on GMV above its cap of $33,333 a month, or $400,000 a year. Performance has custom terms. For a merchant with $1M in annual sales — roughly $900,000 of GMV — that means about $4,500 a year in overage on top of the $3,588 subscription, so the metered portion exceeds the fixed fee.

How does BigCommerce calculate my sales for plan thresholds?

Using GMV, which its FAQ defines as “your gross order value after a 10% reduction”, measured over a trailing twelve months. Eligible sales include product price net of discounts plus taxes and shipping, and count social commerce from Pinterest, Facebook and Twitter along with eBay and Amazon marketplace orders. The 10% reduction raises your effective headroom; including tax and shipping lowers it.

Will BigCommerce upgrade my plan automatically?

Yes, on the lower tiers. Its FAQ states that when sales exceed your plan’s threshold “you’ll be notified and automatically upgraded to the next plan” — Core to Growth, Growth to Scale. On Scale and Performance there are no jumps; instead a continuous overage rate applies to orders above the limit. Because the calculation is trailing twelve months, a single strong period can keep you on a higher plan.

Is BigCommerce Performance worth it over Scale?

Not on price alone. Performance starts at $1,499 a month ($17,988 a year), while a merchant with $2M in annual sales pays roughly $16,188 all-in on Scale including overage. Performance’s case rests on contracted service levels, custom payment terms and a dedicated Customer Success Manager rather than a lower cost of ownership.
