Buffer Expert Review

Buffer charges per channel, and its Essentials plan allows exactly one user account. On a five-channel setup that is $25 a month. Adding a sixth channel costs $5 more. Adding a second person means moving to the Team plan, which doubles the per-channel rate across every channel you already have — so the same five channels become $50. A colleague costs five times what a channel costs, and the pricing page does not put those two numbers anywhere near each other.

  • What it is: A social media management tool priced by connected channel rather than by seat.
  • Best for: Solo creators and small brands managing a handful of channels.
  • Pricing: Free for 3 channels; Essentials $5 and Team $10 per channel per month on yearly billing. Verified July 2026.
  • The honest catch: One user on Essentials — the second person doubles your whole bill.

What Is Buffer?

Buffer is a long-standing social scheduling tool, and its commercial model is genuinely unusual: “only pay for the channels you use.” Rather than charging per seat or by post volume, it meters connected channels, letting you add them as you grow and remove them when you don’t.

Buffer’s pricing page showing a free plan for three channels, Essentials at $5 and Team at $10 per channel per month, with a channel stepper and monthly or yearly billing.

A channel stepper on the page lets you set your channel count and watch the price move. Both paid plans include unlimited scheduled posts and unlimited ideas, an AI assistant, advanced analytics, a community inbox, hashtag manager, and first-comment scheduling.

The free plan is unusually generous on breadth and tight on depth: three channels, but only 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time — refillable, so it is a queue depth rather than a monthly cap — plus 100 ideas, one user, and API access.

How Buffer Works

  • Channels are the meter, not seats or posts.
  • The rate is flat per channel — no volume discount at any count.
  • Essentials allows one user account.
  • Team allows unlimited team members at double the channel rate.
  • Yearly billing saves exactly two months.
  • API access on every tier, including free.

Buffer Pricing

Captured from Buffer’s pricing page in July 2026 in US dollars, reading both billing toggles and stepping the channel count.

Plan Per channel, yearly Per channel, monthly Users API
Free $0, up to 3 channels $0 1 1 key, 3,000 req/mo
Essentials $5 $6 1 3 keys, 7,500 req/mo
Team $10 $12 Unlimited 5 keys, 15,000 req/mo
Channels Essentials/mo Essentials/yr Team/mo Team/yr
1 $5 $60 $10 $120
5 $25 $300 $50 $600

Bar chart of what each addition costs on a five-channel Buffer account: $5 for another channel on Essentials, $10 on Team, and $25 to add a second user by moving from Essentials to Team.

What actually decides your cost:

  • The second user is the expensive addition, not the second channel. Essentials permits one user account. Team permits unlimited — but charges double per channel to do it. On five channels that is $25 a month against $50, so bringing in one colleague costs exactly as much as your entire existing subscription. There is no middle option, and no way to add a single extra seat.
  • Channels price perfectly linearly. One channel is $5 on Essentials and five channels are $25; one is $10 on Team and five are $50. No discount arrives at any count, which matters because a normal brand presence spans five to eight channels. Budget your channel count times the rate and you have your bill exactly.
  • “Save 2 months” on yearly billing is precisely true. Essentials is $6 monthly and $60 yearly — twelve months at $6 would be $72, so you save $12, exactly two months. Team is $12 monthly and $120 yearly against $144, saving $24. Both work out to 16.67%, and both claims check out to the cent.
  • The free plan’s limit is queue depth, not monthly volume. Ten scheduled posts per channel, described as “refill anytime” — so it caps how much you can have lined up, not how much you can publish. On three channels that is thirty posts queued. For someone who batches a month of content on a Sunday, it will bind quickly; for someone posting as they go, it may never.
  • API access is on every tier including free. One key and 3,000 requests a month free, three keys and 7,500 on Essentials, five keys and 15,000 on Team. Very few tools at this price expose an API on a free plan at all.
  • Approval workflows require Team. Access levels and content approval workflows only appear on the top tier — which is consistent, since they are meaningless with one user, but it does mean any process requiring sign-off lands you on the doubled rate.

Who Should Use Buffer

  • Solo creators. The clearest case — one person, a few channels, and a bill that scales exactly with what you connect.
  • Small brands with focused presence. Three to five channels on Essentials is $15–$25 a month.
  • Anyone whose channel mix changes. Add and remove channels freely; the price follows.
  • Developers. API access on every plan, including the free one.

It fits poorly for teams, given that the second user doubles the bill; for agencies managing many client brands, where per-channel pricing compounds badly; and for anyone needing approval workflows on a budget.

Honest Pros and Cons

Strengths

  • Pay only for connected channels — a genuinely fair model for narrow presences.
  • Unlimited scheduled posts on both paid plans.
  • A permanently free plan covering three channels.
  • The two-month yearly saving is exactly accurate.
  • API access on every tier, including free.
  • Add and remove channels at will, with the price following.

Limitations

  • One user account on Essentials.
  • The second user doubles the per-channel rate across every channel.
  • No volume discount at any channel count.
  • Approval workflows require the Team plan.
  • The free plan caps queued posts at 10 per channel.
  • Per-channel pricing compounds for multi-brand work.

Buffer Alternatives and How It Compares

  • Later is the visual-first option, strongest on Instagram.
  • SocialBee offers category-based evergreen recycling.
  • Tailwind specialises in Pinterest and Instagram.
  • Zoho Social prices by brand rather than channel, and has dedicated agency tiers.
  • Hootsuite is the enterprise incumbent, at considerably higher cost.
  • Sprout Social targets larger teams with deeper analytics and per-seat pricing.

For a broader survey, browse our social media management directory.

The Verdict

Buffer’s pricing model is the most honest in this category for the person it is built for. Charging per connected channel rather than per seat or per post means a creator with three channels pays for three channels, and can drop one the month they stop using it. Both paid plans include unlimited scheduling, and the free tier covers three channels permanently with API access — something almost nobody else offers at zero. If you are one person managing a focused presence, very little here works against you.

The model turns sharply the moment a second person is involved. Essentials allows exactly one user account, and the only way to add another is the Team plan, which doubles the per-channel rate on every channel you have. A five-channel brand goes from $25 a month to $50 to bring in a colleague — the same increase as adding five more channels. There is no per-seat option and no middle tier, so a two-person team pays the same rate as a twenty-person one, which is generous at the top end and punishing at the bottom. Approval workflows and access levels also live only on Team, so any process requiring sign-off arrives at the doubled price by definition.

Two things worth crediting. The “save 2 months” yearly claim is exactly right — $6 to $60 and $12 to $120, both precisely 16.67%, which is more than several vendors reviewed here this month managed. And the free plan’s limit is worth reading carefully: ten scheduled posts per channel, refillable, is a cap on how much you can queue rather than how much you can publish. If you batch a month of content in one sitting, that will stop you almost immediately; if you post as you go, you may never notice it.

FAQ

How much does Buffer cost?

Captured in July 2026 in US dollars, priced per connected channel. On yearly billing, Essentials is $5 per channel per month ($60 a year per channel) and Team is $10 ($120 a year). On monthly billing those are $6 and $12. A five-channel account costs $25 a month on Essentials or $50 on Team. There is also a permanently free plan covering three channels.

How many users does Buffer allow?

One on the free plan and one on Essentials. The Team plan allows unlimited team members, but charges double per channel — $10 rather than $5 — across every channel on the account. There is no option to add a single extra seat, so a two-person team pays the same per-channel rate as a much larger one.

Does Buffer get cheaper with more channels?

No. The rate is flat at every channel count — $5 per channel on Essentials whether you connect one or ten, and $10 on Team. One channel is $5 and five channels are $25, exactly. That makes the bill trivially predictable, but it also means a broad social presence across eight or more channels costs proportionally more with no volume relief.

Is Buffer’s free plan worth using?

For a light posting schedule, yes. It covers three channels permanently with one user, 100 ideas, the AI assistant, insights, a community inbox, and API access with one key and 3,000 requests a month. The binding limit is ten scheduled posts per channel — a queue depth rather than a monthly cap, refillable as posts go out — which suits posting as you go rather than batching in advance.

What is the difference between Buffer Essentials and Team?

People and process. Both include unlimited scheduled posts, unlimited ideas, the AI assistant, advanced analytics, hashtag manager, and first-comment scheduling. Team adds unlimited team members, access levels, content approval workflows, and a larger API allowance — five keys and 15,000 requests against three and 7,500. It costs double per channel, so the upgrade doubles your whole bill rather than adding a seat fee.

"Buffer is my go-to solution for automated social media publications"
What do you like best about Buffer?

I love Buffer's suite of automated social media publication tools, specifically, I've integrated Buffer with my and my customers' WordPress websites and then Buffer recognizes when a new post, page, or product is published on the website and automatically pushes the associated Title, Featured Image and Excerpt to my and my company's LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram accounts at times recommended by Buffer as peak viewing times for each platform respectively. Buffer handles all of the social media post formatting, images included, as well as the shortened backlinking URLs. Buffer alerts me via email if a social media post failed to publish and enables a quick resolution of any issues and re-queing of the post. Additionally, I have the capability of resorting the posts thereby enabling unique content to be published between my corporate and personal social media accounts within a particular platform.

What do you dislike about Buffer?

Buffer handles all of the traditional social media platforms, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. However, it does not yet handle the newly emerged social media platforms such as Parler, Gettr, MeWe, etceter. As I have potential customers / audience on those platforms, I need their APIs to be extended to be more inclusive of these new social media platforms.

What problems is Buffer solving and how is that benefiting you?

Staffing has become an issue within my business. Consequently, the social media publication automation offered by Buffer has allowed me to free up my existing staff to perform other higher-value activities other than copying and pasting our published article content into the several social media platforms. As mentioned before, this value will be greatly increased once Buffer supports automated publication to the emerging social media platforms.

"We are engaging better on social media."
What do you like best about Buffer?

The ability to track our performance across major social media platforms in real time ,is what I find most interesting about my Buffer experience. The aforementioned is very critical to my organisation , when it comes to measuring the impact of our marketing campaigns and highlighting areas of strength and weaknesses in how we are engaging customers on all social media platforms where we have a presence.

What do you dislike about Buffer?

Buffer didn't use to support recent social media platforms like Tik-tok and Snapchat. This has since changed and we are now effectively taking advantage of the inherent benefits available on recently popular platforms , like those mentioned above, especially as it relates to connecting with the younger generation.

What problems is Buffer solving and how is that benefiting you?

Buffer has allowed me plan ahead of time for every activity around social media marketing and engagement within my company, using important automation features such as its scheduled publishing and engagement tool.

"Timesaver, great support in communication with a 10-20 people team from different locations."
What do you like best about Buffer?

I love the authorizing a post feature. gives an easier way to get things approved or denied when in different locations. Buffer makes it easier posting to multiple platforms at the same time. If one post needs to hit multiple platforms Buffer is the software for that. Buffer gives our team to connect better giving each other feedback on things that need to be updated. We used to have to call or email our opinion about something then wait for the person to make the corrections an email us. Now we can suggest, get notified of the new update and review it. Buffer makes it easy figuring out posting for a campaign and having all the posts in one location if someone else is working on another piece of the campaign. There Help Center is amazing, they have a variety of videos and resources to help in what you may need support in. The benefits that I have realized is the campaigns, that if there are multiple different pieces to acampaign and a lot people are responsible for a piece it makes it easier to add a post in the campaign schedule to see how it flows. If it doesn't work than we can rework it and make it flow much better to have more meaning behind it.

What do you dislike about Buffer?

I honestly don't have many complaints. The only thing that I think they are working on but I still have some issues with is failed post. If your someone that needs a straightforward interface this may be a little confusing at first to learn but they do have great help center that will help improve your knowledge. It works for the things that my organization needs and we are gratedul for that. The only thing that may need to improve is support sometimes I would love a quick little chat box that can point me in the right direction if I can't easily find the answer to my question in there help center.

What problems is Buffer solving and how is that benefiting you?

I'm not currently working on solving problems with Buffer. It feels that they know what they are doing and try to improve for their customers. Buffer has really good support that helps solve issues quickly.

"BEST SOCIAL MEDIA SCHEDULER"
What do you like best about Buffer?

I use buffer for my social media accounts to schedule posts throughout the day. I also encourage co-workers to use the buffer to share content throughout the day. so the content they want to share is not pushed out simultaneously. I am using it to schedule tweets at the beginning of the day. It saves a lot of time because we need about 15 minutes in the morning for scheduling, and we do not have to touch it again until the next day.

What do you dislike about Buffer?

There is nothing much to dislike i am using this and it is working as expected, scheduling tweets and all the social handles simultaneously. The technical support is great

"Best tool for Managing your social media Accounts."
What do you like best about Buffer?

The thing which I really like about Buffer is its scheduling feature in Buffer. You can schedule your post anytime, which helps in saving a lot of time. Calendar view: It is lovely to have all my scheduled posts for all my campaigns displayed in one place.

What do you dislike about Buffer?

Even though Buffer is a great tool, I dislike using it for Twitter because Twitter only accepts 140 characters. We always make our Facebook posts longer than 150 characters. So, when we make a post on Buffer, it always shows an error for Twitter. Perhaps Buffer should create some Twitter-specific functions.

What problems is Buffer solving and how is that benefiting you?

Our Team productivity has also increased since we no longer have to spend time posting on one platform at a time. With Buffer, I can schedule my social media posts in advance and focus more on creating content.

"Buffer Publish is a terrific tool for content planning and publishing."
What do you like best about Buffer?

The procedure for adding new content is simple, yet it includes several useful added features. When you type a link to share, for example, Buffer will offer you a preview of how it will appear on each of your selected social networks. If you want to include more hashtags to broaden the visibility of your material on Instagram, you can include a first comment with your post.

What do you dislike about Buffer?

Buffer Analyze may be lacking in depth for individuals who seek more information on their social media advertising performance. Furthermore, while Analyze is a useful reporting tool for Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, it lacks the Pinterest and LinkedIn capability of its competitors.

What problems is Buffer solving and how is that benefiting you?

When it comes to scheduled postings, I've found Buffer Publish to be extremely trustworthy. Companies must have faith in their social media management technology to do these responsibilities so that they can focus on other tasks. In that regard, Buffer has you covered.

Significant benefits of using Buffer are Social Media Management, Scheduling, Multi-Channel Posting, and so much more.

"Buffer is your go-to for social media scheduling"
What do you like best about Buffer?

I love the very user-friendly setup that Buffer offers. It is simple and gets the job done right. I usually am very hesitant to use a social media content scheduler because I am very particular. I trust Buffer again and again!!

What do you dislike about Buffer?

I would not say there is anything in particular that I don't like about buffer. I do wish that the free version had some sort of alert system that reminded you that you had a post going out so you could remember to check and see how it looks on your page.

What problems is Buffer solving and how is that benefiting you?

I am solving a huge time crunch problem with Buffer. It is the best thing that has ever happened to the small business I used to work for and I also use it for my freelance account.

"Buffer does exactly what I need"
What do you like best about Buffer?

I have several clients using Buffer to manage social media. I love that you can add your own images even with a URL so that you can control what appears on social.

What do you dislike about Buffer?

I haven't found anything to dislike yet. The hardest part for me to figure out was where to update the time zone - but once you see where it is, it's easy to find again.

What problems is Buffer solving and how is that benefiting you?

I use Buffer for scheduling social posts well in advance, but I've also begun using it instead of posting natively on the social apps themselves, because it makes it super easy to post the same or similar messages to more than one platform at a time.

"Love this service - use it every week"
What do you like best about Buffer?

Buffer allows me to schedule posts to various social media outlets days or weeks in advance. I like that the first tier of the service is free. And it's affordable when you're ready to level up.

What do you dislike about Buffer?

Connecting to Instagram is tricky. The Instagram has to be linked to a FB account. This can be a problem if you're using multiple Insta accounts.

What problems is Buffer solving and how is that benefiting you?

I don't use Buffer for FB and Insta anymore since they offer in-app scheduling, but it is still convenient for scheduling posts to LinkedIn.

Sometimes Buffer will post ahead of the time I allotted for posting but this doesn't bother me as much.

I can use my office time more productively and have eliminated the problem of forgetting to post for my business.

"By far the most effective social media scheduling tool."
What do you like best about Buffer?

Buffer is a fantastic social media scheduling tool that can distribute posts across every social media accounts simultaneously. It also facilitates the sharing of several media formats. Custom URLs may be used to track all of the data transmitted via buffer. Buffer also offers actionable reports to help you enhance your social media operations.

What do you dislike about Buffer?

Manual submission, but we found a work-around for WordPress; there's a plugin called WP to Buffer Pro, utilized to schedule to all social media sites straight from WordPress, extremely easy. Aside from that, if you don't have a premium membership, the maximum number of planned tasks is limited to 10, requiring you to schedule often.

What problems is Buffer solving and how is that benefiting you?

It helps us save hours by devoting only half an hour in a month's worth of postings! It's rather large so that you may put that time to better use. In addition to the WordPress plugin, we use the Buffer API to schedule programmatically. That's also handy if you're a developer; you might want to check into it more.

"Buffer is the most intuitive way"
What do you like best about Buffer?

I like it because I can efficiently manage social media marketing. We can know who is interacting and schedule our posts at strategic times. I am delighted to have a plan focused on the development of online and digital marketing, and it has helped me achieve significant post coverage and great success in content programming on any social network. I have been able to get new leads thanks to Buffer.

What do you dislike about Buffer?

I wouldn't say I like the ability to optimize the content library because it seems less attractive. A minor update can solve the problem of accurate reporting and tracking of commitments. The Pro version is a bit pricey for small businesses, and you can't schedule posts with tagged firms or people. They removed the suboptimal sync feature that I used and found beneficial. I never knew why they completely removed it, but they should get it back. They have taken some features for free and included them in the paid version. Indeed, it is not that expensive ($ 100 a year), but it is a bit like throwing a rug at some users.

What problems is Buffer solving and how is that benefiting you?

It makes it easy for us to keep track of all of our interactions and strengthens our connection with our audience, saving us time and helping us improve our point of view, enabling us to work smarter, smarter, and not too harsh. We get information about what works on social media. Allows us to manage the content calendar of our social media sites through an easy-to-use control panel. Analytics also help us understand what types of content work and what types don't.

"Buffer is Set-It-and-Forget-It Magic"
What do you like best about Buffer?

At Flow, we have multiple clients that need content published during very tight time frames. Buffer, let's us get all of our content scheduled way ahead of time across multiple social media platforms. We use it every week!

What do you dislike about Buffer?

Oof. This is something that I hope can be added because we are having to manually do this right now. Tweet threads. Buffer can't handle it right now, and I'd hate to go to a competitor just because of this one feature.

What problems is Buffer solving and how is that benefiting you?

Before we started using Buffer, we'd have to make time on our daily schedule to publish to each social media platform during specific time frames. Now, I can set content weeks in advance to publish on a schedule. It's saved so much time.
