- Consciously makes an effort to minimize their carbon footprint

GreenGeeks prints its renewal price on the plan card. “Pre-paid for 12 months. Renews at $13.95/month” sits directly beneath the $2.95 headline, in plain sight. After reviewing a run of hosts that publish only the introductory rate, that deserves leading with. The renewal is still steep — 4.7 times the first-year price on the entry plan — but you can work out your true second-year cost without leaving the page, which is more than most of this category allows.
- What it is: Eco-focused web hosting — shared, WordPress, VPS and reseller, running since 2008.
- Best for: Buyers who want the environmental angle and will renew with eyes open.
- Pricing: $2.95, $4.95 or $8.95 a month for the first year. Verified July 2026.
- The honest catch: Year two costs 3.5 to 4.7 times year one.
What Is GreenGeeks?
GreenGeeks is a web host built around an environmental claim: it works with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation to match its energy usage — servers and staff workstations — three times over with renewable energy credits, and plants a tree with One Tree Planted for every account provisioned. Beyond that it is conventional shared hosting: cPanel, a 1-click installer for 150+ apps, free Let’s Encrypt SSL with auto-renewal, free CDN, daily backups and a 99.9% uptime guarantee.
Each card states “Renews at…” directly under the price.
How GreenGeeks Works

- Renewal printed on every card.
- Free domain for the first year.
- 30-day money-back guarantee.
- 300% energy match via renewable credits.
- Unmetered traffic on all plans.

What actually decides your cost:
- The renewal rate is on the card, and that is genuinely unusual. Every plan states “Pre-paid for 12 months. Renews at $13.95/month” — or $18.95, or $30.95 — directly beneath the headline price, alongside the struck-through original. Several hosting products in this review series publish only the promotional figure and leave the renewal entirely undisclosed. GreenGeeks does not, and a buyer can therefore compute the real cost of ownership before clicking.
- What that computation shows is a steep cliff. Year one on Lite is $35.40. Year two is $167.40 — a 373% increase. Pro goes from $59.40 to $227.40 and Premium from $107.40 to $371.40. Averaged across two years, Lite works out at $8.45 a month, not $2.95. The introductory price is real, but it is a first-year price, and the honest way to compare GreenGeeks with anything else is on the renewal figure.
- The discount percentages are accurate. “Save 79%, 74% and 71%” against original prices of $13.95, $18.95 and $30.95 check out at 78.9%, 73.9% and 71.1% — all within a rounding point. Note what the maths implies: the “original price” and the “renewal price” are the same number on every plan, so the discount is a genuine first-term promotion rather than a permanently struck-through fiction.
- Lite’s real limit is one website, not its disk space. At $2.95 you get 1 website and 25 GB; Pro at $4.95 gives unlimited websites and 50 GB. Two dollars a month separates them in year one, and $5 a month at renewal. For anyone who might ever host a second site — a project, a client, a staging copy — Pro is the sensible floor, and the gap is small enough that Lite only makes sense for a single permanent site.
- Premium costs 81% more than Pro at renewal for disk space alone. $18.95 versus $30.95 buys 100 GB instead of 50 GB, with the website allowance already unlimited on both. Nothing else in the core feature list differs. If you are not going to fill 50 GB, the upgrade is buying headroom you will not use — and $144 a year in renewal terms is a lot for storage on shared hosting.
- The 30-day money-back guarantee is the longest in this hosting cohort. GreenGeeks states “30-day money back guarantee!” beneath each plan. For comparison within this series, Apex Hosting offers 7 days and LearnDash 7 days. Thirty days is enough to migrate a site, watch it under real traffic and leave if it disappoints — which is the only way to evaluate a host properly.
- The environmental claim is specific, and worth reading precisely. GreenGeeks says it works with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation to “match our energy usage, such as servers and staff workstations, by 3 times” — that is renewable energy matching through credits, which is a legitimate and widely used mechanism, but it is not the same as servers physically running on renewable power. The site’s footer phrasing, “300% Green Web Hosting Powered by Renewable Energy”, is looser than the explanation on the page itself. The company also cites 50,000+ trees planted, one per account provisioned, via One Tree Planted.
- The free domain lasts one year, like the price. Every plan includes “Free Domain (1st Year)”. So two things reset at the twelve-month mark: the hosting rate and the domain registration. Budget for both when the renewal lands, rather than only for the hosting figure.
Who Should Use GreenGeeks
- Environmentally motivated buyers. The clearest case — a specific, published offset mechanism rather than vague claims.
- Multi-site owners. Pro’s unlimited websites at $4.95 in year one.
- WordPress users. cPanel, 1-click installs and free auto-renewing SSL.
- Anyone who wants to test properly. 30 days is a real evaluation window.
It fits poorly for buyers optimising purely on long-run price, where the renewal is 3.5–4.7×; for single-site owners tempted by Lite who may later want a second site; and for anyone expecting the environmental claim to mean servers run directly on renewables.
Honest Pros and Cons
Strengths
- Renewal price printed on every card.
- Discount claims verify to within a rounding point.
- 30-day money-back guarantee — the longest in this cohort.
- Unlimited websites from $4.95 in year one.
- Free SSL, CDN, daily backups and email on all plans.
- A specific, named offset partner rather than vague green marketing.
Limitations
- Year two costs 3.5–4.7× year one.
- Lite allows one website only.
- Premium’s premium is disk space and nothing else.
- Free domain expires with the intro term.
- 12-month prepay required — no monthly option shown.
- Footer wording overstates what the energy matching does.
GreenGeeks Alternatives and How It Compares
- Hostinger competes hard on introductory price with similar renewal jumps.
- SiteGround is the performance-focused alternative at a higher renewal.
- DreamHost offers monthly billing and a much longer guarantee.
- Web.com targets small businesses wanting a bundled site builder.
- Cloudways or a managed VPS suits sites that outgrow shared hosting.
The Verdict
GreenGeeks earns credit for something small and rare: it tells you what renewal costs. Under the $2.95 headline sits the line “Pre-paid for 12 months. Renews at $13.95/month”, and the same is true on both plans above it. Several hosts reviewed in this series publish only the promotional rate and leave the second year entirely unstated. Here you can do the arithmetic before you buy — and the arithmetic is worth doing, because year one on Lite is $35.40 and year two is $167.40, a 373% increase. Across two years the entry plan averages $8.45 a month, not $2.95.
The discount claims themselves hold up. “Save 79%, 74% and 71%” verify at 78.9%, 73.9% and 71.1%, and because the struck-through “original price” is the same number as the renewal price on every plan, the promotion is genuine rather than a permanent fake markdown. That is a more honest structure than it first appears — the deal is straightforwardly “one cheap year, then list price”.
On plan choice, Pro at $4.95 is the sensible floor. Lite’s constraint is not its 25 GB but its single website; two dollars a month more in year one — five at renewal — buys unlimited sites and 50 GB. Going further to Premium costs 81% more at renewal ($18.95 to $30.95) and the only difference in the core features is 100 GB instead of 50 GB, since websites are already unlimited. Unless you have a concrete storage need, that is $144 a year for headroom.
The environmental proposition, which is the reason most people find GreenGeeks, is specific enough to assess. The company works with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation to match its energy usage three times over with renewable credits, and plants a tree per account through One Tree Planted. That is a real, named mechanism rather than vague green branding — though the precise claim is matching consumption with credits, not running servers directly on renewable power, and the footer’s “Powered by Renewable Energy” is looser than the explanation elsewhere on the page. Combined with the 30-day money-back guarantee — the longest in this hosting cohort — it is a reasonable proposition for a buyer who values the environmental angle and goes in knowing what year two costs.
FAQ
How much does GreenGeeks cost?
Three shared plans, in US dollars as captured July 2026, all prepaid for 12 months: Lite $2.95 a month, Pro $4.95 and Premium $8.95. Those are introductory rates. They renew at $13.95, $18.95 and $30.95 respectively — figures GreenGeeks prints on each plan card. In annual terms that is $35.40, $59.40 and $107.40 for year one, then $167.40, $227.40 and $371.40 thereafter.
Does GreenGeeks renew at a higher price?
Yes, substantially — and it says so on the card. The renewal is 4.7× the intro price on Lite, 3.8× on Pro and 3.5× on Premium. What makes this more transparent than most is that GreenGeeks states “Renews at $13.95/month” directly under the headline, and the struck-through “original price” is the same figure, so the promotion is a genuine first-term discount rather than a permanent markdown.
Which GreenGeeks plan should I choose?
Pro for most people. Lite’s real limitation is one website — not its 25 GB — and Pro adds unlimited websites and 50 GB for two dollars a month more in year one. Premium costs 81% more than Pro at renewal and its only core-feature difference is 100 GB rather than 50 GB, so it is worth it only if you have a genuine storage requirement.
Is GreenGeeks actually green?
It has a specific, published mechanism. GreenGeeks works with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation to match its energy usage — servers and staff workstations — three times over with renewable energy credits, and plants a tree per hosting account with One Tree Planted, citing 50,000+ trees so far. Note the precise claim: this is renewable matching through credits, a legitimate and common approach, rather than servers running directly on renewable power.
Does GreenGeeks offer a refund?
Yes — a 30-day money-back guarantee, stated beneath every plan. That is the longest guarantee among the hosting products in this review series and long enough to migrate a site, run it under real traffic and leave if it underperforms. All plans also include a free domain for the first year, which renews at the same time the hosting rate does.

I love their excellent customer support, never experienced a long wait. Their reliable uptime is also a great benefit for me. Their dashboard and other interfaces are super easy to use.
They need to offer more plans specificly for high-demand hosting needs.
A hosting provides that is environmental conscious. and also provides datacenters based in Canada
Customer service is always incredibly quick. They've even solved issues I had with my website in the middle of the night! They are also as eco-friendly as possible, which I love.
I don't dislike anything about GreenGeeks.
I have a website using GreenGeeks webhosting that is as eco-friendly as possible, with quick and efficient customer service. My website has never been down for more than a few minutes, for reasons that were addressed and corrected immediately (often before I even knew anything was going on!)
Support is amazing. Server performance is much much better. choice of Canadian data centres.
The pricing is kind of pricier than other web hosting companies, but their service makes up for the price.
Data reside problems, privacy concerns. fast website performance.
I originally started using GoDaddy for web hosting until I switched because of a promo that they had. I prefer GreenGeeks over any web hosting sites. They have excellent customer service and it is super fast and easy to begin. My favorite thing they do is they help reroute all domains for you instead of the tedious work that I would have had to do on the back end. And a plus, they are a green company!
The only issue that ever occurred was a kick back on my payment. I'm not sure if it was something on my end or on their servers. I called customer service and it was taken care of quickly.
I was using GreenGeeks for web hosting services and wordpress hosting.
The customer service with greengeeks was outstanding. They had my reseller account up within 2 minutes and I was already making money!
Software deployment could have been a little easier to use. Wasnt hard to use though.
I use greengeeks personally for my reseller account to get my clients up and running faster. This is the best way to make money.
The hosting is fast. Every time I have needed support I have received nearly instant response from the chat agent. The bandwith and resource allocation work great for most sites using wordpress and drupal. Email setup through cpanel works great and is really nice to have unlimited storage on the primary domain on my reseller account.
The firewall and IP blocking rules are a little strict for shared and reseller hosting. One of my clients needed to access their web app simultaneously with about 12-15 users. There was no performance issues with the hosting, but the firewall kept blocking their ip address. Greengeeks was not able to lift this rule for this client on reseller hosting. I noticed that on the new plans for reseller hosting they have changed from limited storage space and unlimited cpanel accounts to a new model. The new model allows for unlimited storage space but the plan pricing is based on number of cpanel accounts. I don't forsee any issues with this model for things like prototyping, but I believe it will increase costs for the reseller as new clients come on board.
Instant cpanel creation for prototyping websites and web apps. I'm able to have nearly unlimited projects in different stages of development with reseller hosting. We have been using email through the reseller hosting for our company, as well as some of our clients. I think that the ability to set up email without any additional monthly costs is great
We strive to be environmentally conscious and sustainability was one of the things we wanted in our website hosting.
I've seen the website down for no reason at all... the only reason I noticed was Google actually sent me an alert. It only happened once and they fixed the problem quickly when I contacted them, but I don't know how many potential visitors were turned away.
A website host is a basic necessity, but the bonus of being environmentally-friendly helps maintain our integrity by showing that we make an effort to stand by our green values.
The downtime has been really outstanding.
The customer support is hit or miss at times.
Hosting all my websites - pretty straight forward.
Cheap price, nice quality and very good service. I have used many host and i feel this is one of the best.
Sometime, i get some errors about payment
I'm always looking for a good hosting because i want to make the best website and GreenGeeks is so suitable.
Their shared hosting is fast when compared to some of the traditional ones. Their customer support is excellent, and their dashboard makes it easy to use and implement. They also have one of the high-paid affiliate programs in the market.
They do provide some great offers when we are starting, but their price increases after using it for the initial years.
They have one of the fastest servers out their, which makes our website load pretty faster. Easy to use
They have a good solid support, online chat as well as phone support that you can contact at all hours.
They no longer have a managed VPS solution. They recently removed it. It was not all their fault, based on the price changes by cpanel which is 3rd party server management software.
I use greengeeks for a shared hosting solution for most of my clients. Easy to use, solid pricing and phone support for my clients.
The support personnel at Green Geeks is extraordinary! Most marketers I know don't really want to completely comprehend the ins and outs of setting up a VPS Server, adding Cnames and redirecting domains, etc. We have other things to do. I was really confused when I was told that the mass emailer software I just purchased needed a VPS. A V what?? Support at GreenGeeks helped me with every detail, every step to ensure I had a quality, stable server for my mailer. They couldn't have been more professional, kind, and patient with me. And when I wanted to expand my hosting needs for a website, that was already covered under the monthly fee I was paying.
This may seem trivial, but when time matters (and we all know it does), I had to search high and low on Green Geeks website for the Sign up/ Sign in links. I finally just googled "Green Geeks signup page." I mean, come on web designers...if you lose a customer or two to a competitor because you make it too difficult to locate the most important step to access your services, then I think it's your own darn fault ;). That's why I chose an 8 instead of a 10.
I purchased this inexpensive mass mailer/autoresponder software, but afterwards found out I needed a VPS Server to host it on the web. They recommended Green Geeks so they solved this cruciap piece for me. I realized that Green Geeks had excellent support as well as being a full service hosting site w8th everything from domain registration to integration with Wordpress for web design. I am not currently using Green Geeks only because I don't currently use the mailer I purchased and decided against the website I was planning to build.
Easy to use platform for creating Wordpress sites. Performance is Ok, but not the best.
The performance isn't as good as some of the comparable companies out there for hosting.
I like that their servers are running on a green energy and are better for the environment.
They offset 3x the energy they use with, I believe wind credits. Oddly, this is difficult information to find on their website right now. For my sustainable industry clients, this is a big plus. I also appreciate that they have not sold out to EIG.
I feel that overall, the hosting is a bit slower than other hosting platforms. Things can hang up significantly. when doing a backup or updating plugins. They do not have an easy "let's encrypt" option like many others, but they will help you use a let's encrypt SSL certificate.
Claiming a "green" hosting solution for sustainable industry clients. It is reliable hosting, no major problems.
GreenGeeks has competitive pricing for the service they offer. The Ecosite Starter starts at $3.95 a month triennially and comes with unlimited web space, unlimited data transfer, a free domain, and various application support such as WordPress. If you are a beginner, they offer starter site builder which you can request for free.
Although GreenGeeks advertise themselves as a Canadian hosting service with servers in Toronto, they do not have Canadian pricing and charge all plans in USD. The file manager in cPanel only allows selection of files and lacks a method of uploading whole folders at once. FTP account setup and connection is required for better file management which is fine but adds to the number of interfaces I have to work with when managing my sites. There are also hidden clauses not apparent when looking at their plans such as their excessive usage policy: "A hosting account is considered using "Excessive amounts of resources" when it consumes 100% of 1 CPU core, and/or 1 GB Memory, 20 concurrent connections and/or 75,000 files also known as "Computing Resources", and/or "Resources", and/or "Resource Usage"."
I have a startup company that needs reliable web hosting and GreenGeeks offers great uptime and nightly backups.
The ease of checking and availability and registering a domain and relative process experience
The payment options and ability to use the host for evaluation purposes prior to signup
Overall simple hosting for smaller company business, we did however move to another platform
Widely suported and familiar Hosting Interface FAirly timely customer service
Restricted usage and tight enforcement during spikes in usage
Hosting option for multiple clients are a lower cost
At first, I liked Green Geeks and did not have much to complain about.
I found that when I needed assistance, I was provided with a link to an article to read and fix the issue by myself.
I am no longer using GreenGeeks so nothing is to my benefit.
GreenGeeks is a reliable host. If you're just starting out with your website, you can get a reliable host for a great price. There customer support is amazing and I have not had any issues in the past.
If you're scaling, suddenly the amount you have to pay is going to be very high. And you can get a higher plan from a better service provider such as Cloudways.
I wanted a cheap but reliable host to get started with WordPress. For that purpose, GreenGeeks hosting was great. Initially, I had multiple sites in the same account, including a WooCommerce website. They allowed me to keep it for a long time without limiting the resources.
