Klaviyo charges for active profiles — every contact you could still reach — whether you email them or not. That single mechanic drives the entire bill. A store holding 25,000 profiles pays roughly $400 a month even if it only mails 5,000 of them, which makes deleting unengaged contacts one of the highest-return things an ecommerce marketer can do.
- What it is: The leading ecommerce marketing automation platform, combining email, SMS, and customer data.
- Best for: Shopify and ecommerce stores where email and SMS drive meaningful revenue.
- Pricing: Free to 250 profiles. Reported at ~$20 at 500 contacts, $100 at 5,000, $400 at 25,000. SMS billed separately.
- The honest catch: The steepest step is in the middle — reportedly $150 to $400 between 10,000 and 25,000 profiles.
What Is Klaviyo?
Klaviyo is the default answer for ecommerce email and SMS, and its dominance rests on data rather than sending. It ingests every event a store generates — products viewed, carts abandoned, orders placed, refunds issued — and makes them addressable in segments and flows. The result is automation that knows what someone bought, when, and what they looked at afterwards.
That depth is why it wins against general email tools for stores. Abandoned cart, browse abandonment, post-purchase, replenishment, and win-back flows all work better when the platform holds the commerce data natively rather than syncing it. Revenue attribution per flow follows from the same foundation, and it is what makes Klaviyo defensible at its price.
The platform has broadened considerably. Alongside Marketing, the pricing page now lists Data + Analytics, Service, Composer, and Customer Agent as separately priced products — so Klaviyo in 2026 is a suite you assemble rather than a single subscription.
How Klaviyo Works
- Billed on active profiles. Contacts you can still reach, regardless of whether you send to them.
- Email and SMS priced separately. SMS is an additional line on top of the email plan.
- A genuinely free tier. 250 profiles, 500 emails a month, and $5 of mobile messages.
- Deep commerce integration. Native connections to Shopify and other platforms, ingesting events rather than just contacts.
- Revenue attribution per flow. The reporting that justifies the cost to a finance team.
- Multiple priced products. Marketing, Data + Analytics, Service, Composer, and Customer Agent assemble into one total.
Klaviyo Pricing
The free plan is published; paid pricing sits behind a calculator. Figures below are third-party reported for July 2026.
| Active profiles | Reported email cost |
|---|---|
| 250 | Free (500 sends/month) |
| 500 | ~$20/month |
| 1,000 | ~$30/month |
| 5,000 | ~$100/month |
| 10,000 | ~$150/month |
| 25,000 | ~$400/month |
What actually determines your bill:
- You pay for reachable contacts, not activity. This is the mechanic everything else follows from. A profile that has not opened an email in two years costs the same as your best customer. Pruning unengaged profiles is a direct, immediate cost reduction — and usually improves deliverability at the same time, which makes it the rare optimisation with no downside.
- The middle of the curve is where it hurts. Reported pricing moves from about $150 at 10,000 profiles to $400 at 25,000 — a 167% increase for 150% more contacts. Growth costs more than proportionally exactly where most successful stores are heading.
- SMS is a separate bill. Roughly $45 for 5,000 US messages on top of the email plan, so a 10,000-profile store running both is nearer $195 than $150.
- The free tier is real but tiny. 250 profiles and 500 monthly sends is enough to build flows and validate the integration, not to run a store.
- The platform is now modular. Data + Analytics, Service, Composer, and Customer Agent are priced separately, so “what does Klaviyo cost” increasingly depends on which products you assemble.
- Paid pricing is calculator-only. There is no published table, so comparison requires configuring your own scenario.
Who Should Use Klaviyo
- Ecommerce stores with real revenue. The clearest case. Where flows drive meaningful sales, Klaviyo’s data depth pays for itself.
- Shopify merchants. The integration is the deepest in the category and the reason Klaviyo became the default.
- Teams running email and SMS together. Unified profiles across both channels genuinely help.
- Anyone who needs revenue attribution. Per-flow revenue reporting is what justifies the spend internally.
It fits poorly for newsletters and content businesses, where Kit costs far less and fits better; for large, rarely-mailed lists, where profile-based billing is the worst possible model; and for stores just starting out, where Omnisend offers similar capability with a more forgiving free tier.
Honest Pros and Cons
Strengths
- The best ecommerce data model in the category. Events, not just contacts.
- Excellent revenue attribution. Per-flow reporting that answers the commercial question.
- Deep Shopify integration. The strongest native connection available.
- Email and SMS on unified profiles. Genuinely useful rather than two products bolted together.
- A real free tier. 250 profiles is small, but permanent and functional.
- Category-leading flows. Abandoned cart and post-purchase automation are the benchmark.
Limitations
- You pay for contacts you never email. Profile-based billing punishes large dormant lists.
- Steep mid-curve escalation. Reportedly 167% more between 10,000 and 25,000 profiles.
- SMS costs extra. A separate and meaningful line item.
- No published price table. Paid pricing requires the calculator.
- Increasingly modular. Five separately priced products complicate the total.
- Expensive against general email tools. Justified only if you use the commerce depth.
Klaviyo Alternatives and How It Compares
- Omnisend is the closest ecommerce competitor, generally cheaper with a more generous free tier.
- Drip offers ecommerce automation with no feature gating at all, at a flat $39 entry.
- Kit is far better for creators and newsletters, free to 10,000 subscribers.
- ActiveCampaign goes deeper on B2B and complex behavioural automation.
- MailerLite and Brevo cost a fraction for straightforward email, without the commerce data layer.

The Verdict
Klaviyo earns its position. For an ecommerce store, the difference between an email tool that holds contacts and one that holds every purchase, view, and cart event is the difference between sending campaigns and running automation that knows what someone actually did. The Shopify integration is the deepest available, the flows are the category benchmark, and per-flow revenue attribution answers the only question that matters when someone asks whether the tool is worth its cost.
The thing to internalise before committing is what you are being charged for. Klaviyo bills on active profiles — every contact you could still reach — regardless of whether you email them. A dormant subscriber from three years ago costs exactly what your best repeat customer costs. That makes list hygiene a genuine financial lever rather than a housekeeping chore: deleting profiles you will never successfully re-engage reduces the bill immediately and usually improves deliverability, which is an unusually clean win. Do it before every renewal.
Watch the middle of the curve especially. Reported pricing rises from around $150 at 10,000 profiles to $400 at 25,000 — steeper than proportional, and precisely the range a growing store passes through. Add SMS as a separate bill on top, and the total for a 10,000-profile store running both channels is closer to $195 than $150. None of that makes Klaviyo bad value if the flows are producing revenue; it does mean you should model your cost at the list size you expect in a year rather than the one you have, and check whether Omnisend or Drip cover your actual use case for less.
FAQ
How much does Klaviyo cost?
The free plan covers 250 active profiles, 500 email sends per month, and $5 of mobile messages. Paid pricing sits behind a calculator rather than a published table; third-party sources report roughly $20 per month at 500 profiles, $30 at 1,000, $100 at 5,000, $150 at 10,000, and $400 at 25,000. SMS is billed separately, at roughly $45 for 5,000 US messages.
What is an “active profile” in Klaviyo?
A contact you can still reach — someone who has not unsubscribed or bounced permanently. Klaviyo bills on this count regardless of whether you actually email them, so a subscriber who has ignored you for years costs the same as an active customer. This is the single most important thing to understand about Klaviyo’s pricing, and it makes deleting unengaged profiles a direct cost saving.
Where does Klaviyo’s pricing get expensive?
In the mid-range. Reported figures rise from about $150 per month at 10,000 profiles to $400 at 25,000 — a 167% increase for 150% more contacts, so cost grows faster than list size exactly where most growing stores are heading. Adding SMS increases it further, since that is billed separately on top of the email plan.
Is Klaviyo’s free plan enough to start with?
To build and validate, yes; to operate, no. It covers 250 active profiles and 500 email sends a month, which is enough to connect your store, construct flows, and confirm the integration works properly before paying. Any store with real traffic will exceed 250 profiles quickly. Omnisend’s free tier is more generous if you need longer at zero cost.
What is Klaviyo best for?
Ecommerce stores — particularly on Shopify — where email and SMS drive measurable revenue and flows are built on purchase and browsing behaviour. Its data model and revenue attribution are the best in the category. It is a poor fit for newsletters and creator businesses, for large lists that are rarely emailed, and for stores that only need broadcast campaigns.

The support chat is super helpful and I like it shows the wait time.
Sometimes it's a little bit of a long wait to get a hold of support.
Giving us more access to analytics and their seminars are also great to sit in on.
The simplicity of the interface. I love new template builder. It is easy to use and help design really good emails.
Nothing. It's perfect. It has everything thing you need to set up your email marketing.
Helps e-commerce brands automate email marketing. It makes my job as an email marketer simple.
It offers amazing metric tracking, detailed reporting, and has a great UI. Managing campaigns and creating unique segments has never been easier! Seriously, the ease of use is the best part–even a marketing newbie can succeed using it. Love that we can save our templates and get as creative and personal with our lists as possible.
They should have a better helpdesk and webinars to best learn how to use all the features. The system has a lot going on which is great but can be intimidating at first.
Hyper-personalization, campaign control/organization, data reports, all of the metrics! Having such clear data available makes my job easier and allows me to make informed decisions.
Ability to create automated flows and dynamic segments based on specific criteria
Triggers/filters are sometimes confusing to setup
Keeping customers engaged for return purchasers
Klaviyo integrates beautifly with BigCommerce allowing us to create flows and campaigns which we can send to only the most relevant contacts in our lists. The ability to add emails and SMS messages into flows is excellent and gives us the best option for getting action from the customer.
The Klaviyo support has been hard to reach lately due to staff shortages, but it's certainly getting better. If it is something urgent, chat support might be best, otherwise, you can get a response by email. They have already discussed that they're hiring to make sure the support situation gets better as soon as possible so I feel confident that this will be resolved soon.
We were working with 2 vendors (one for email, and one for sms) for our marketing and since Klaviyo started offering SMS, we decided to combine and use one vendor.
I've been using Klaviyo for email for about 2 years now and just started using the SMS features in the last few months. Adding SMS options into existing flows (journeys) is easy and effective. Klviyo has been very helpful in getting our business to make a very positive ROI on the cost. Our email campaigns continue to be successful, but the segmented and targeted flows are the moneymaker for us!
The cost is a bit high but that is to be expected with what we receive in return. They are also struggling with technical support reps to handle the influx of chat, email, and phone requests. The wait time to talk to a human can be a bit tough at times, but they re very helpful once you are able to talk to someone.
We were using other email platforms but we were looking to take email marketing to the next step. The integration with BigCommerce gave us the option of making very in-depth customer segments which was lacking in other email platforms.
What I like best about Klaviyo is the ability to create content outside of the software and import the image into the email to make a clean and astehtically pleasing design. I also love how the company offers live trainings to always keep their customers up to date regarding the newest updates to the software. Another aspect I love is how easy it is to customize buttons to fit the asthetic of the content of the email. Lastly, I love that Klaviyo offers the recommendation generator for email subject lines and even shows how our previous subject and preview lines performed with our customers.
What I dislike about Klaviyo is that the metrics for old emails from previous years are available to view and the email templete its self isn't viewable. I also don't like how long metrics take to load while an email is sending out that current day. Lastly, I dislike that not all fonts are available on Klaviyo and we have to go on the bedend to imbed our brands font to fit our brands guidelines.
Klaviyo is solving the problem of keeping constant contact with our vaulable customers and keeping them up-to-date with valauble information. It also solves the problem of sending automted emails such as welcome emails and shipping confirmation to thank our customers for their purchase. Klaviyo is benefiting me by allowing me to schedule emails ahead of time to make sure they are sent every week at the same time based on the local recipients time zone.
The ability to create smart marketing and product flows.
If you have multiple regional stores, Klaviyo doesn't allow you to be logged into multiple Klaviyo accounts at one time.
Klaviyo allows us to send automated email marketing to targeted groups of customers.
I like Klaviyo's functionality and ease of use. It makes creating email flows and campaigns a quick and simple process. We have seen great results by using Klaviyo for all of our outgoing emails to customers.
the one thing that I don't like is that they changed their email creation function and it is unable to integrate with previous design templates. This makes it frustrating having to recreate templates.
Klaviyo had taken over all of our emails to our customers. We use Klaviyo to announce collection drops, new products, and company updates. We have also seen great results from the welcome series we created.
Templates aren't at all boring - they're so modern that they require very little to be changed. The most you really have to do is just add your brand assets in.
No dislikes, it's super easy to use and I love that you can so easily duplicate existing campaigns and flows to create a similar one.
I am less hands on as they are automated email flows which complement my ordering process and follow up with people who haven't ordered in a while with incentives to do so.
Klaviyo has excellent integration with Shopify, arguably the best in the industry. I represent an agency, we've partnered with Klaviyo to offer this solution to our clients and we couldn't ask for more in terms of the solution and the journey they provide to merchants and our internal team. The platform can be as complex or as simple as merchant requirements dictate, which is great as we work with brands through various stages of growth. Having the knowledge that the solution is scalable as they grow certainly gives merchants peace of mind. The single best feature would be the sheer amount of integrations available. For merchants with a growing tech stack, it's vital that data is passed between tools so merchants have a holistic and actionable view of interactions.
I feel that Klaviyo could be an 'intimidating' choice for those merchants that have particularly basic requirements for emails. If you're occasionally sending campaigns and aren't interested in automation, building profiles and really making the data work - it's unlikely you'll see value from this product.
Klaviyo allows greater accuracy in targeting the right customers (or prospective customers), at the right time. This is driven by the data that the platform passively collects via integrations or user consent. This means that the likelihood of engagement is significantly higher. More engagement = higher LTV.
Customer segmenting is easy to set up and offers many options to hone in on different audiences. It also integrates with every other tool in our tech stack. Email templates are very easy to design and use - Even for users who don't have design or creative background.
It is a more expensive platform. The one "bug" to me is that you can't change a trigger once you've set up a flow.
Engaging customers and generating revenue
It's easy for us to create flows and see how each email/text impacts our profit.
The texts seem a little pricy but when you see the return, it's definitely worth it.
We look at which campaigns perform better and why. It's great to replicate the things that work, because you know it's working!
Using Klaviyo gives your company and your customers value. It's easy to use for email, SMS and pop-ups. I like that you don't need to be an expert to use it.
Some processes are very manual, which at the begining it's ok, but with time you need to do things faster.
Email and SMS campaigns are launched with Klaviyo, an epic win for our sales. Also, automations are very helpful since they're already built.
The flows are the most helpful. From our customer service to campaign emails and SMS, we are able to streamline and personalise the Kulani Kinis customer experience to meet their needs.
There are very few limitations, such as not being able to include MMS in our Australian targeted SMS or being able to pin specific timezone send times within campaign scheduling.
We solve a lot of customer service issues, we are able to reach out and not miss things that may otherwise slip through. The greatest benefit has been reducing the work load for our customer service team and also being able to ensure all our customers get the best experience.
The ability to create segments based on customer attributes and history is great. If I wanted to send emails to every customer that has made 3 purchases over a certain dollar value in an 18 month span in a specific state, I can do that with Klaviyo segments and campaigns. I can also create flows for things such as back-in-stock alerts, cart reminders, checkout reminders, and more. Klaviyo also integrates with our e-commerce platform, BigCommerce.
The cost is rather expensive and the customer service can be very slow. It is still a great value and a massive part of our marketing strategy. They also offer a "showcase" which has nice-looking email templates to use as inspiration for designing, however, you cannot use them, just view them.
We were using Mail Chimp for our email marketing and it was a lot harder to gauge the success and send such targeted and segmented emails. The capabilities of Klaviyo seem to surpass MailChimp by leaps and bounds.
The integration to shopify is such an easy process and the data sync is a treat. We use klaviyo mostly for the abandon flows and it has been converting really good.
The only drawback is the billing. It gets expensive as our subscribers increase. And it really gets tricky with profiles and user suppression. Other than that I do not see any flaws in this system.
Klaviyo and flows has been lifesaver to e-commerce seller like me. And it's automation process which makes the work much simpler and faster. Klaviyo pays for itself.
There is a great deal of support always available in the form of either direct contact or articles and classes.
While it is intuitive now, I did find there was a bit of a learning curve with some of the most technical aspects.
I am able to easily track metrics and assess the effectiveness of my campaigns. I can see that Klaviyo has directly impacted my revenue and allows me direct access to my customers at a time where social media reach is unpredictable.
Klaviyo is a comprehensive communication hub for eCommerce and gives a single home and view for email and sms and integrates the most popular marketing tools.
The email drag and drop editor is glitchy and slow. Most of the time, it's not a big issue but the lag can be a little frustrating.
ROI is really easy to see with conversion tracking and Klaviyo shows you how to maximize revenue with campaigns and automations.
I like that the platform is easy to use and my dashboard looks clean and uncluttered. Menus are navigatable and make sense. I also like all the classes and webinars they host, makes me feel like a pro even tho I'm def not.
I haven't experienced anything that I didn't like.
I'm able to run marketing/email/sms for my small biz in one place that's very user-friendly. Having increased access to metrics is also very awesome.
The thing that is most useful for us with klaviyo is that we are able to maintain list based data rather than just pure emails. This enables us to do more with data and reach wider audience
Although there are other similar marketing automation platforms out there on the market, i do not have any major dislike with Klaviyo. I am enjoying using the platform
Managing list based data is very useful for us . We are able to see insightful information from the campaigns that we send like clicks rate open rate etc which is quite handy for us
Very good customer support, Awesome thought-out app user interface, and very helpful automation which anyone can set up easily. you can easily integrate Klaviyo with any website like Bigcommerce, Shopify, Magento WordPress, etc.
There are too many features so which are hard to remember, but overall it's good.
It helps customers with automation quickly, and make their life better. as well because of good customer support it's easy to implement any features. their integration docs are also good.
I like how directly I am able to see our marketing effects or sales goals
Audience limits, if I were able to have more audiences I could either cast a large net or a smaller one
I am solving and controlling the customer experience on a large, digital scale
I love the ability to have so many different audiences created and easily editable. Our company heavily uses flows as well and it's been a dream!
I wish that you could use crtl+Z to undo within klaviyo like you can across other platforms/operating systems.
Email marketing is the best it's been with Klaviyo data reporting. We've been able to hone in on subset groups of customers with ease and send them more support.
I like that Klaviyo can do everything email. They have great automations. You can run campaigns. What I love most is the analytics of Klaviyo. Lastly they have tons of integrations.
I wish the user experience of Klaviyo could be better. It's one of the uglier backend platforms than any of the other email platforms out there. Other than that, nothing else.
The problem that I'm solving is reaching out to customers who want to learn more about our product. It also helps us target customers better for sales emails. We have seen business increase form klaviyo.
Our dedicated CSM, Katelyn, is great. Plus their UI is very easy to use.
Their SMS is a little bit outdated to competitors.
We've been able to customize so many more emails!
Their platform is easy to learn and their customer support chat is always helpful if there are issues.
I wish there were more fonts available in the drag and drop templates.
Helps drive revenue and re-engage customers.
Easy to send email marketing with and track sales. The dashboard is easy to use and effective.
Tracking sucks since we have a subscription business. It picks up sales that are not due to the email marketing but yet the rebill.
We are adding more sales and magsing customers expectations.
The sheer power of customization and delivery is unmatched.
To be honest, there isn't much I dislike. The price is higher than I would like as you scale, but that's about it.
Keeping customers engaged and increasing AOV.
It's easy to use, and has lots of templates. I love that I can set up automations for both SMS and email marketing to recover abandoned cart sales and get new visitors to buy. And it has a free plan
Some integrations that I am looking for don't exist, and this requires me to use a third-party tool in order to integrate it.
Emails are now sent automatically. I like that Klaviyo was created specifically for eCommerce audiences .
