WooCommerce Reviews: 4.4/5 — Solid Choice

WooCommerce Overview
What is WooCommerce?

WooCommerce is the top choice for eCommerce businesses on WordPress. While it’s not a standalone site builder, it works seamlessly with the WordPress environment which makes it easy to use and simple, even for beginners. Anyone familiar with WordPress will find WooCommerce a great tool as they attempt to build out their site. WooCommerce works well with add-ons and integrations, with tools that include email marketing, social media selling, and one-click upsells. It does require basic coding know-how and developer insight as you scale the site, but learning the ins and outs of the platform ultimately makes management of the site so much simpler.

"Customer Service is Lacking"
What do you like best about WooCommerce?

That the basic platform is free. It was fairly easy to install especially since this is not my forte. They offer a free theme that you can marginally customize for your storefront.

What do you dislike about WooCommerce?

I am using the WC theme and products yet my website doesn't necessarily work correctly. I keep getting bounced back and forth between WooCommerce and GoDaddy and not really getting my problem solved. WooCommerce demands certain standards for their system status and GoDaddy says they aren't able to meet those standards. After spending several days being bounced back and forth with no real answers from either party, I simply gave up. If I can't solve the settings issue on my own, I make look for another ecommerce provider.

What problems is WooCommerce solving and how is that benefiting you?

Having an e-commerce site. I'm able to take credit cards and ship from my site without a huge expense.

"WooCommerce has it's moments."
What do you like best about WooCommerce?

The best thing about Woocommerce is it's payment integration options as well as the easy integration into wordpress.

What do you dislike about WooCommerce?

I find that Woocommerce is a bit money grubbing for some of our clients - Often times we work with new companies who have pretty tight budgets - to really get all that you need to START an effective eCommerce site - you have to pay a pretty hefty price. And - support for woocommerece? Practically non-existent.

What problems is WooCommerce solving and how is that benefiting you?

Small retail clients who need a system that they can easily manage (or figure out). There are plenty of plugins and creative ways to keep a site fresh.

What do you like best about WooCommerce?

Initially it was the best Ecommerce platform for our WordPress website.

What do you dislike about WooCommerce?

It is the not as user friendly as Shopify and it requires more utilization of their marketplace app's to have functionality required. This can become expensive and increase data security risk and uncertainty in the financial stability of the developer.

What problems is WooCommerce solving and how is that benefiting you?

Ecommerce platform to handle B2C transactions.

The shipping structure leaves a lot to be desired.

Watch out for 'upgrades'. The theme & plugin upgrades can completley destroy your site layout or function. Be Ready to roll back the upgrade with your backup. We're moving to Shopify.

"Not the best for membership platforms"
What do you like best about WooCommerce?

It has a great plugin and good customer service.

What do you dislike about WooCommerce?

We could not get it to work for our membership site, no matter how many options we tried!

What problems is WooCommerce solving and how is that benefiting you?

We ended up not being able to solve the problems. It was nice that it plugged in so nicely with wordpress and they have a lot of options, but it didn't fit our needs.

"Only if you have a very small e-com"
What do you like best about WooCommerce?

Free, easy, and lots of forums that can answer questions. We learned how to your woocommerce when studying e-com and marketing so it was easy to use since I hade previous experience.

What do you dislike about WooCommerce?

Not very flexible, have to use loads of plugins to make it work

What problems is WooCommerce solving and how is that benefiting you?

We have our whole e-com platform there - as CMS, stock, sales reports and so on. But we really have to double the work to make the platform work for us now that we have a growing e-com.

What do you like best about WooCommerce?

I like that you can add widgets and add-ons onto the site to make it personal and customized just for your business

What do you like best about WooCommerce?

It does all the essentials. We use it for my company’s website and it’s able to work well with our inventory management system.

What do you dislike about WooCommerce?

It’s not very quick, but other than that, it’s super basic and gets the job done.

What problems is WooCommerce solving and how is that benefiting you?

We used to use Shopify but we were having security issues with it, so now we switched to Woo to do the same functions.

"Unbelievably undeserved popularity esp. if you are DIY but not raw CSS fluent"
What do you like best about WooCommerce?

It's similarity to WP eCommerce that is (was) easier to mesh with your look. It works and flat rate shipping actually has decent options; but limited re:WP eC.

What do you dislike about WooCommerce?

Needs elusive custom CSS unless you use nothing but prefab defaults even with Astra Pro -- aesthetically buggy. They tell you your theme authors need to write you some CSS for things that are nothing but crummy Woo shortcuts in poor code. The only way Woo overcame WP eCommerce was better publicity. WP eCommerce was way less problematic for a person who just wanted it to match your theme global settings. Also some solutions put the Short product description in the catalog. Theirs is just next to the product when you open the page. I hate Woo Commerce after switching because (WP eCommerce died) and while I'm not a dev I've been pretty good at webmastering and finding CSS, but you constantly see Woo DIY mostly-free non devs like me needing unique custom CSS written for them because it's not just a few known fixes; it's clashes in buggy ways with sites themes here there everywhere because Woo is poorly done.

What problems is WooCommerce solving and how is that benefiting you?

I only half solved my Woo problems because they say they can't be bothered creating an account for my website like they'd have to do to see their OWN "My Account" page. The first half has been solved by Astra Pro techs whose responsibility was not fixing poorly written Woo bugs but they did it anyway. Don't use Woo if you're DIY free and are not planning on white backgrounds or content backgrounds, you'll have ulgy white wrappers and ugly white selector bars and things outside of the normal everyday stuff that is tackled more often. Most people have white sites that Woo's corner-cutting code camouflages in with and that's all they care about.

"Woocommerce is a Money Pit"
What do you like best about WooCommerce?

Since it's a WordPress plugin, you have much more control over customization, look and feel than you do with cloud-based solutions like Shopify.

What do you dislike about WooCommerce?

The WooCommerce base software is virtually useless without purchasing dozens of pricey "extensions", but you only discover this gradually, after you've invested a lot of time into setup and integration. It's like they've perfectly designed it to milk the maximum amount of money from their customers. Our company literally has ONE product. So, we thought the WooCommerce base software would be enough to let our customers purchase it from our Wordpress website. We were wrong. We sell our product two ways, with a "buy it now" price or with a "pay monthly" option. Well, it turns out that in order to do a monthly plan, we needed to buy the "Subscriptions" extension--at a cost of $199/year. OK! Next, we wanted to create coupon codes. So we went to the "Coupons" section of WooCommerce to create coupons, but they don't work with subscriptions unless you buy the "Smart Coupons" extension--another $99/year. I bought this extension after a very long support chat session with WooCommerce support, which seems to exist solely to sell you extensions. And, after paying for it and installing it, it actually didn't do what they said it would do. They did refund me, though. But now we're forced to use DIFFERENT coupon codes for the "buy it now" and "monthly" options. Imagine the nightmare of having to advertise two different coupon codes for the same product, and expecting your customers to know which one to use based on how they pay for it. But WooCommerce unfortunately is unable to use the same coupon code for two different types of products. But they said they'd be willing to take my money to create a "customization" to allow this! Next, since we have only one product, we wanted to just create "Buy Now" buttons that take the customer directly to checkout, rather than having them click on a cart button, view a "cart", then click "checkout". Oh, you want to do that? That will be another $39/year for the "Quick Buy Now Button" extension. Since we have affiliates who drive customers to our website, we wanted to be able to track their sales so we can pay commissions. How do we enable that? You guessed it! $129/year for the "Affiliate" extension. Need to ship via UPS or USPS? That will be an additional $79/year for the "USPS Shipping Method" extension and anoher $79/year for the "UPS Shipping Method" extension. At least DHL offers their own extension for free! Want to integrate Google Analytics? That will be $79/year. Want to export your customer and order data? $79/year, please! Seeing a trend here? Keep in mind that many of these extensions are incompatible with each other (like coupons not working for subscriptions). Also, some are unstable. I installed the Affiliates extension and it immediately crashed my entire website. I had to get an engineer to remove the plugin over FTP to restore my site. On top of all the money you spend on extensions, it seems that WooCommerce has deliberately made their platform extremely inflexible. Most platforms allow you to make small changes with configuration options, but with WooCommerce you need to hire a developer to create a "customization". And guess what? The folks at WooCommerce's "support" chat are happy to put you in touch with their Customizations department, who will happily take even more of your money to do simple things like changing the order of the checkout form. I even asked them how I can set up my WooCommerce so that my checkout form looks just like the one on WooCommerce's own extension store. The answer? You need to pay us to customize it. That's right, not even WooCommerce's OWN STORE is possible without customization. In fact, I had four interactions with WooCommerce support chat, and in EVERY case they suggested I buy an extension or pay for a customization. So, if you choose WooCommerce because it's "free and open source", keep in mind that you'll likely have to spend at least a thousand dollars to get it to do basic things. And you could easily spend a lot more. Compared to that, a $40/month subscription to a cloud-based hosted web store platform doesn't seem so bad.

What problems is WooCommerce solving and how is that benefiting you?

We are able to sell our products directly to customers from our own WordPress website.

"Support are no help"
What do you like best about WooCommerce?

The range of plugins they have available for the WooCommerce platform.

What do you dislike about WooCommerce?

Platform is very slow, constant updates. The core platform was updated causing a plugin I had paid for not to work, there only answer was pay again so you have the latest version. Took no responsibility for causing the plugin to break. Don't expect them to be concerned about users on older versions, seems like the update the core platform to cause paid for plugins to not work so you have to keep paying for a subscription.

What problems is WooCommerce solving and how is that benefiting you?

The ability to charge our customers for our digital products. However subscriptions do not currently work. The platform for a more traditional store for one off purchases seems pretty solid. Its their lack of support that makes the platform hard to work with.

What do you like best about WooCommerce?

A WordPress plugin, so all the benefits of WordPress are there.

What do you dislike about WooCommerce?

WooCommerce is not an enterprise solution. It doesn't integrate well with other systems (parcel tracking, payment, inventory) and as far as I know, doesn't allow for basic things like returns and partial order returns.

What problems is WooCommerce solving and how is that benefiting you?

"Overpriced, Unstable Platform"
What do you like best about WooCommerce?

Woocommerce is pretty good if you don't have an in house developer. It allows you to place elements anywhere and they have a huge library of applications that use it.

What do you dislike about WooCommerce?

You have to pay for every single application you use and there is no way to test it before hand. If you like it you have to pay every single year and the usual price is $50-$70 per application. That really adds up if you happen to be renewing when there isn't a sale and you have more than 5 or 6 apps which is common. When apps don't function properly, they take no responsibility and your website has problems that you will need to pay a programmer to fix.

What problems is WooCommerce solving and how is that benefiting you?

I needed a simple payment platform for our products. The platform works, but it is not user friendly or cheap.
