WordPress.com Overview
What is WordPress.com?

Powering more than 43% of all active websites globally, WordPress is arguably the most popular and widely used CMS and website builder used by businesses of all sizes across all industries – from solopreneurs, startups, SMBs, and big Fortune 500 enterprises. Both novice users with no coding knowledge and highly experienced web developers can benefit from WordPress’ long list of features including ready-made yet customizable templates, thousands of easy-to-install add-ons and plugins, built-in and custom-made functionalities, and robust content management features. Highly flexible, WordPress promises its users that they will never outgrow their website built on its ecosystem as it’s easily adaptable as their business needs grow and evolve. WordPress is also downloadable as an app and available to both Android and iOS users enabling marketers and content creators to manage their websites across all devices. WordPress is arguably one of the biggest website builders today. With WordPress, users have the option to use their web host or install WordPress’ own hosting. The latter lets users design and build their blog or online store, and access the Jetpack plugin for improved SEO, as well as security and analytics. Depending on your needs, it’s fairly easy to set up your WordPress site, and maintaining it is even simpler on this platform. You also have the option to install third-party plugins to add more features to your website and boost functionality. WordPress offers a free plan for anyone who wants to try out the service first, but if you want to subscribe, plans start as low as $4 a month for the basic plan.

"Wonky, slow, difficult, time-consuming"
What do you like best about WordPress.com?

I like that Wordpress has a good reputation, and it makes us look like thoughtful editors for using it. Our peers use WordPress--so do sites like People and Entertainment Weekly. You can also find our other work via our profiles, so it shows that we really are experts in our field.

What do you dislike about WordPress.com?

The site is too difficult to design and very expensive (compared to its competitors). I know code, but the site makes it so that you have to have a Masters and a premium account to make your site look professional--and we ARE professionals! It was such a hassle to get going that in the end, we refuse to use anything else because of the exorbitant labor pulling everything together.

What problems is WordPress.com solving and how is that benefiting you?

We have a Facebook page that automatically posts for us, so we get more readers, which looks good professionally.

"It's Okay, I don't recommend building a real website through it"
What do you like best about WordPress.com?

I like that it's similar to wordpress.org as in, if you blog using WordPress normally, building a WordPress site is very similar. It's generally user-friendly and easy to find solutions to problems.

What do you dislike about WordPress.com?

Even if it's easy to find a solution, it doesn't mean the solution is easy. I absolutely hate the fact that I cannot change the size of font when editing (I can use headings or paragraph, that's it. It might be our template, but I'm not changing our website template to find out...). You have to manually write the code for each line of text. It's so tedious (I know how to write code and it's dumb that you have to do this on a wordpress site). That's my biggest issue. And if you change the font size manually, you also have to change the line spacing because it gets very messed up. Also, changing the size of the font somehow makes it so that the site isn't mobile friendly - real fun stuff.... All in all, the site is not the greatest. Wix was much more user-friendly but couldn't do everything we needed.

What problems is WordPress.com solving and how is that benefiting you?

We needed a better website than we had. Now, we are moving on from wordpress..

"Large Learning Curve for NonDevelopers"
What do you like best about WordPress.com?

There is seemingly a vast opportunity to build many different types of site through Wordpress.com. The sites are mobile responsive and there are a lot of online tutorials to help you learn how to troubleshoot any problems.

What do you dislike about WordPress.com?

There is a huge learning curve for nondevelopers. While there is a lot of opportunity to create custom sites, it is extremely difficult to learn how to use the features of Wordpress.com. There are no drag and drop features, so you are essentially trying to design a site through an admin panel, without directly seeing the changes you are making - which makes even the smallest updates very time consuming. If you are looking for anything other than the bare bones of a site, it will take you time to learn how to use Wordpress.com.

What problems is WordPress.com solving and how is that benefiting you?

We have made a few basic client sites using WordPress.com. We were able to build a cookie cutter site within a few days. We used a free template, so it was pretty inexpensive.

"Pro: lots of customization, Con: unreliable, bugs, and headaches"
What do you like best about WordPress.com?

There are many options in terms of themes, plugins, and customization.

What do you dislike about WordPress.com?

Working with third-parties is a crapshoot. Sometimes the sellers go out of business, and now your $40 theme won't have updates, making it unreliable in the future. Plus, you never know how easy/workable a theme is until you start playing with it. The Wordpress forums can be helpful if you have a common problem, but you're really left on your own or with the seller when you need to troubleshoot. I recommend having a coder, or at least having a team member who can read code, in order to minimize headaches.

What problems is WordPress.com solving and how is that benefiting you?

We can put a whole website up in a matter of weeks with a small team.

What do you like best about WordPress.com?

When I first used the Free version in college it was actually pretty simple and straight forward to use. For someone who has never built a blog before it was straightforard

What do you dislike about WordPress.com?

I mean the options for the free version are limited, but that is to be expected and when it comes to wanting to customizing it can become complicated if you are not familiar with coding.

What problems is WordPress.com solving and how is that benefiting you?

I was using to promote the business and found once I understood the layout it was easier to get what I wanted across to the customers viewing the page.

What do you like best about WordPress.com?

There's a wide-variety of add-ons and applications available for the WP platform. I like the wide variety of templates and styles, too.

What do you dislike about WordPress.com?

If you're using the free service, there is no support beyond the prewritten answers to the FAQs. If you forget your password, get a new phone number or lose the authorization codes, you can forget about your website. It's frozen in time. Good luck getting someone to help you.

What do you like best about WordPress.com?

WordPress works easily and can be quickly learnt by even the first-time users. It's userface is simple enough and once you get the hang of it, using it can be like second nature.

What do you dislike about WordPress.com?

What problems is WordPress.com solving and how is that benefiting you?

WordPress allows us to easily distribute content on our website from many authors without the need of spending money on tutorial classes. We've been able to host a website on there with ease and gather some good analytics.

"Clunky to use"
What do you like best about WordPress.com?

WordPress, when understood well, is a good tool for building websites and personal online portfolios. It can make sites look pretty sleek and easy to read, and has a decent amount of options to make your website distinct from others.

What do you dislike about WordPress.com?

WordPress can be difficult to use and understand, especially for those trying to utilize for the first time. It's clunky and complicated, and not terribly intuitive.

What problems is WordPress.com solving and how is that benefiting you?

WordPress can be difficult to train individuals under. It takes a bit of tinkering to get the hang of it, and there's generally no time to tinker in order to gain that understanding. However, it is a useful resource for site building.

"Although the platform has gotten better, I find it still more difficult than it needs to be..."
What do you like best about WordPress.com?

I get my domain name through word press, and like the price of $18 a year. I used WordPress formally for my website and blog, and liked the community feel for it at the time.

What do you dislike about WordPress.com?

Although the platform for blogging has gotten better (I have used it to guest blog on EverAfter Romance), I find the website building platform more difficult, especially loading widgets, and styling it the way I want.

What problems is WordPress.com solving and how is that benefiting you?

Having my own domain has been great for branding and using WordPress as a guest blogger has helped reach new readers. I have played around with it a bit, and although the formatting is better, I don't like that I have to pay extra to customize my website. (With weebly, I can use a custom format for free.)

What do you like best about WordPress.com?

I like the endless options available for both beginners (myself) and advanced programmers. There are so many themes and plugins available. In my opinion this is the standard.

What do you dislike about WordPress.com?

It would be awesome if some how wordpress created a drag and drop, layout collaboration with adobe. Where you can just easily type commands with out having to know coding knowledge. One big problem I have is when random updates are made and everything goes rogue / disappears. Friendlier shopping cards would be great.

What do you dislike about WordPress.com?

What do you like best about WordPress.com?

I suppose access to plug ins? But that's a double edged sword. There's not much to like, if being sincere about it. Everything that seems nice, complimentary or cool has a weird, evil doppelganger of a problem that seems pointed exactly at what you are seeking to acomplish.

What do you dislike about WordPress.com?

Wishy washy 'help' provided by support. Blame always placed on 3rd party. If you use advanced terminology to even the superiors to the superiors no one knows what you are discussing. In ten years of on and off again service with WP, I've never been emailed back in accordance to a request for an escalation (which I'm told can only be done by phone). AVOID!!!! Get a computer from 1986 and run Dos out your garage. You'll be so much better off.

"Difficult User Interface"
What do you like best about WordPress.com?

I hear rave reviews about WordPress from people who love to use it as a blog. I have only ever created websites that are stores or multi-page websites. I personally don't have any positives for this site. I would not recommend WordPress to anyone who wants a fully functioning website.

What do you dislike about WordPress.com?

I originally tried WordPress.com because a client had signed up with that site to create their website/web store. The client hired me to create said site and store. This website was not functional for the client's needs. WordPress.com has many screens you must go through to select your page. I do not feel that it is very user friendly. This site was just not usable for my client's needs and I was very dissatisfied with it as a user. I ended up switching from WordPress.com to Wix.com to complete my client's project.

What problems is WordPress.com solving and how is that benefiting you?

I was trying to create a website/web store for a client using WordPress.com. However, this site was not user friendly and did not seem equipped to build a multi-page site with an integrated web store. I hear from many people that WordPress.com is a great resource for bloggers but I do not have experience with this personally.
