Basecamp Overview
What is Basecamp?

Basecamp has evolved as a project management platform since its launch in 2004 but its mission to help remote teams stay organized, productive, and efficient remains. One new feature that Basecamp recently added is called Basecamp Hill – a visual representation that divides the component of a project into a phase of uncertainty, unknowns, and problem-solving (uphill) and a phase of certainty, confidence, and execution (downhill). This is on top of Basecamp’s core features which include a Message Board, To-dos, Calendar, Documents and Files, Group Chat, and Automated Check-ins. It’s a top-down and bottom-up platform for everyone in a business or organization – from proprietors and C-level executives to project managers and individual team members.

"Base Camp a bit cumbersome"
What do you like best about Basecamp?

I enjoyed the fact that we could keep all of our information in one place

What do you dislike about Basecamp?

it was cumbersome and awkward. It was easier to use a facebook group to keep everyone on the same page, and share docs (or google drive)

What problems is Basecamp solving and how is that benefiting you?

trying to keep everyone involved up to date with the same docs and information

"Antiquated Sharefile software"
What do you like best about Basecamp?

You are able to share large files that our email server will not allow. The program allows for multiple uses inducing clients and project managers.

What do you dislike about Basecamp?

There is a lot of front end work to set up projects and include participants. There is also no way to link this into your outlook mailbox. The interface is also confusing and is hard to organize projects.

What problems is Basecamp solving and how is that benefiting you?

We are able to share large files and completed sets of building documents with multiple people at once.

"Not recommended for detailed project management"
What do you like best about Basecamp?

The interface looked nice and it was fairly easy to set up and move between projects and tasks. Since Basecamp is web based, it made it easy for all users to access whether they were on location or remote. The speed was good as well.

What do you dislike about Basecamp?

There were no features built in for tracking or accountability. People could upload notes and documents, but there isn't reporting available for a way to export a project plan and easily track deadlines being completed or staying on point. I also couldn't connect budgets, costs or risk into the projects. The program became as convoluted as everyone just sending emails back and forth and users lost interest and stopped logging in.

What problems is Basecamp solving and how is that benefiting you?

I was attempting to find a software solution that would allow project owners, sponsors and support staff to easily share project status, however, I realized that Bascamp was more of a communication tool than a tracking tool. I was not able to find much benefit in this product and had to abandon it since I had to use other project management tools for tracking and follow-up in addition to Basecamp, which in reality added a step for me to go in and check for updates and then manually update my project plan tracking documents.

"A horrible collaboration tool"
What do you like best about Basecamp?

What do I like about it? Well, I suppose it is better than NO collaboration tool, but only barely. Post-it notes and carrier pigeons would likely work better.

What do you dislike about Basecamp?

My hatred for Basecamp burns with the fury of a thousand suns. Okay, that's an exaggeration. The fury of a hundred suns. Of all the collaboration or project management tools I have ever used, Basecamp was the worst. In fairness, it's been at least a year and a half since I used it, so it is possible that they have replaced their entire dev team and put out a decent product, but otherwise I expect more of the same. The search function is poor. The email updates sent automatically by the system are difficult to manage. The interface is kludgy. Little flexibility. The calendaring is sub-par. Unrefined feature set. I can't think of anything I liked about it. I'm baffled by all the positive reviews on G2crowd for it. I could go on with the complaints...

What problems is Basecamp solving and how is that benefiting you?

Project management and collaboration.

"Task list not project management"
What do you like best about Basecamp?

Basecamp is very intuitive and easy to use. There is very little learning curve. If what you need is lots of task lists Basecomp will work for you.

What do you dislike about Basecamp?

What I dislike about Basecamp is that it fundamentally is not a project management tool. The core of a project management tool is to create a list of tasks, organize dependencies, determine who is going to be doing what, schedule it and then adjust the schedule based on resource contention. Basecamp doesn't do any of that. There is no notion of dependency. There is no way to look for future resource contention. So there is really no way to schedule there really aren't timelines. The discussion threads are locked into tasks and can't be easily searched. It is missing other core features like budgeting. It simply isn't a project management tool it is a task list.

What problems is Basecamp solving and how is that benefiting you?

I tried using it for a medium complex project, we were collaborating with people who were using Basecamp.

What do you dislike about Basecamp?

Things haven't evolved over the last couple years and now there are other options out there for managing projects and tracking time.
