Are you a non-designer looking for graphic design software? If you need to create designs for your business, Canva is one of the top rated tools to choose. In this post, we’ll explore Canva’s pricing, features, and alternatives.
Canva is an online graphic design tool used by 55 million monthly active users to create visual content for offline and online marketing. Over 9,400 Capterra reviewers have given Canva an average rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars.
Canva offers hundreds of thousands of templates and elements you can use to create designs for personal or business use. Customize your visual content with your brand kit and media from your own library.
Canva offers three pricing plans. The Free plan includes the following.
The Pro plan starts at $12.99 per month (or $119.99 per year) for up to five people. It includes everything from the Free plan plus the following.
The Enterprise plan starts at $150 for five people. It includes everything from the Pro plan plus the following.
To get started on Canva, you will need to create an account using your email address, Google, Facebook, or Apple. You will then choose your account type between student, teacher, small business, large company, non-profit, or personal. Templates and additional resources will be recommended based on your chosen account type.
You can choose to start a free trial of Canva Pro or begin with the free version to see if it’s the right graphic design tool.
For your first design, Canva will suggest different post types to choose. Based on the type of account you set up, you will see template categories like social media posts, documents, presentations, marketing, events, ads, launch your business, build your online brand, etc.
Begin by choosing the type of post you want to create or searching for something more specific. Search by social network name, for example, to see a list of templates by post type on each network.
Next, you will be able to choose a template. Templates come ready to go, with customizable photos, text, and additional elements.
You can start your design by choosing a template, searching for a template, or working with a blank template.
Canva has a lot to choose from, so start with a specific search. If you’re in the horticulture business, you’ll find plenty of templates for a variety of post types just by searching for plants.
You may not find the perfect template, and that’s ok. Remember there are plenty of ways to customize any template. So choose the best fit and move on to Elements.
Inside the Canva designer, the Elements tab gives you access to lines and shapes, graphics, photos, videos, audio, charts, photo frames, and photo grids. You can use the search box on the Elements tab to search everything on Canva.
Again, Canva has a large library of elements to choose from, so be specific in your search query. You may also want to search in the following tabs to see various elements separately in the search results.
The Photos tab allows you to choose from millions of free, paid, and Pro-only stock photos.
You can replace photos on your templates to create a new look or to match a particular template to your industry.
Alternatively, you can use photos from another stock photography site or your own photos. Simply upload them in the Uploads tab.
Once you choose a photo, you can use Canva’s photo editing features to add filters, adjust the photo’s settings (brightness, contrast, saturation, etc.), crop, animate, and change the transparency.
Canva Pro subscribers have access to the Background Remover. This will remove backgrounds from stock photos in the Canva library as well as photos you upload to the Uploads tab.
The Text tab allows you to add headings, normal text, and fancy graphical text to your design.
When you click on the text on a template, you’ll see options to adjust the font, font size, color, format, spacing, text effects (like shadows), and change the transparency.
Canva Pro subscribers can set brand fonts via the Brand Kit or the Styles tab. Enterprise-level controls will ensure that your team keeps visual content on brand.
Creating an animated image or video? Search for audio elements to add to capture user’s attention in social news feeds.
Alternatively, if you want to use audio from another stock site or your own audio tracks, you can upload them in the Uploads tab.
Want to create video content? Choose from thousands of free and Pro-only stock video clips. You’ll find videos that range from a few seconds to two minutes long.
Similar to photos and audio, if you want to use videos from another stock site or your own videos, you can upload them in the Uploads tab.
Once you choose a video, you can use Canva’s video editing features to trim the video, flip it, and change the transparency.
In the Background tab, you’ll find free photos specifically geared to act as backgrounds on your designs. Change out the background on a template to give it a more custom feel.
The Styles tab allows you to change the look and feel of your template quickly with different color palettes and font combinations. If you have a Canva Pro subscription, you can upload your brand’s custom colors and fonts to keep designs on brand.
If you have a Canva Pro subscription, you’ll have a Logos tab. Here, you can upload variations of your brand logo to use throughout your designs.
You can also create logos with Canva. Note that you can’t trademark logos with stock content in them.
Free users of Canva can download their designs or share their designs to multiple platforms including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Slack, and Tumblr.
Canva Pro subscribers can use the Magic Resizer to create multiple post formats from one design. For example, you can start by designing an Instagram post. Canva’s Magic Resizer can resize it for posts on other networks, Stories, Reels, and other formats.
Canva Pro subscribers can also use Canva’s Content Planner to schedule updates to up to eight profiles/accounts on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Slack, and Tumblr.
Canva Pro subscribers can work in teams to improve the visual content workflow. Designs can be created inside Canva and sent to the appropriate team members for approval. Teams can make comments, edits, revisions, and keep track via the version history.
If you create a design for offline marketing, Canva has a Print division to compete with companies like VistaPrint. They will print your designs on banners, wall art, mugs, t-shirts, business cards, stickers, invitations, cards, flyers, and more.
Canva Print is perfect for any business that wants customers to do some word of mouth marketing for them. Create designs people would want to stick on, wear, etc. Hand out business cards that people want to keep and share.
Canva offers their own mobile app on the Apple and Google Play stores. Canva has earned a 4.9 out of five stars from over 3 million Apple users and a 4.7 out of five stars from over 188,000 Google users.
With that said, the mobile app doesn’t have all of the features you’ll find on the desktop browser version. Fortunately, you can access most of them via a mobile browser by going to the Canva website and bypassing the app.
In addition to mobile apps, Canva has apps and integrations that allow you to access elements from third parties. You can add maps from Google Maps, Emojis, photos from Google Drive and Dropbox, YouTube videos, Flickr photos, Bitmojis, and other popular visual content elements.
Review networks like TrustRadius allow people to leave specific pros and cons about their Canva experience. Amongst the over 500 reviews, here are some of the highlights from the pros and cons users have identified.
If Canva doesn’t sound like the right fit for you, you may be interested in trying the following Canva alternatives.

Alternatively, you can get access to all Adobe tools for your visual content needs for $52.99 per month.
PicMonkey is a Canva alternative that boasts better photo editing features and no hidden fees for premium templates or elements. With that said, PicMonkey does not offer a free plan. Their pricing starts at $7.99 per month for basic features.
Crello is a free graphic design tool that is similar to Canva. It includes thousands of templates and features like the photo background remover and brand kits. The app on the Apple store has an average rating of 4.7 stars from over 600 users.

Yes, Canva offers an easy to use video tool for visual content creators who aren’t video experts.

Yes, unless it has any stock elements in it.
Yes, if it doesn’t include unaltered Canva media. You can read more about licensing, trademarks, and commercial usage of Canva content here.
Canva offers several free resources for designers.
If you want to five even deeper into graphic design, Adobe offers some insightful free guides as well. There are tips for various design types (tattoos, backgrounds, newsletters, logos, etc.) and use of graphic design principles, colors, and symbols.
Overall, Canva is an excellent solution for creators who need visual content. If you’re an experienced graphic designer, you will find their platform lacking in customization and other features – particularly vectors. But if you don’t have a lot of design experience, you’ll find Canva easier to use than advanced graphic design tools like Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator for most projects.
I have been using Canva since 2020 and I am absolutely in love with how easy it has made designing. The features are extraordinarily simple and even a layman who just wants to create a poster or a menu can make a professional looking design within 15 minutes. The templates provided by Canva are so diverse and customizable that you don't even need to start designing from scratch! I love the incorporation of AI in video editing.
Sometimes even though I have a Canva Pro subscription, I might receive problems with logging in and saving designs.
Many brands and organizations struggle with designing and having an aesthetic appeal to their products or services. NGOs struggle with social media management due to there being a lack of designers and them being unable to afford a good designer. Canva solves this all by giving a platform to a beginner who doesn't really know the basics of design help achieve their design targets. I manage a nonprofit and provided designs through Canva and helped them build their brand image through the designs.
Canva makes it easy to create professional looking graphics, flyers, posters, etc.
Unless you have a paid account, you have limited access to templates and artwork. You still have lots to choose from, but it is less.
Canva helps me create professional looking graphics for our agency Facebook page. It also helps me create flyers, posters, reports, etc.
Canva is so powerful and easy to use. I design great posts many times faster than with other programs I've used.
I would like to see more video making options.
With Canva I can create many posts in a short period which saves precious time
Canva's user-friendliness is a total game-changer. I mean, it's like they asked, "How can we make design not feel like brain surgery?" The drag-and-drop interface and intuitive controls are so smooth; it's like designing without the headache. Plus, the sheer variety of templates is mind-blowing. Whether you're making a social media post or a fancy presentation, they've got you covered. It's like having a creative genie at your fingertips.
Well, even the coolest superheroes have their quirks, right? With Canva, I'd say the only downside is that some of the premium elements can feel a bit like highway robbery. You get used to the free goodies, and suddenly they tempt you with these premium features that are just out of reach unless you fork over some cash. But hey, I guess every magic wand comes with a price tag.
User-Friendly Design for Non-Designers: Canva solves the problem of graphic design being traditionally complex and intimidating. Its user-friendly interface allows non-designers to create professional-looking designs effortlessly. This benefits users like me who may not have advanced design skills but still want to produce visually appealing content. Abundance of Templates: The vast template library addresses the problem of starting from scratch. Canva provides templates for numerous design needs, saving time and effort. This is particularly beneficial when creating social media graphics, presentations, posters, and more. Collaboration and Real-Time Editing: Canva's collaborative features solve the problem of disjointed teamwork in design projects. It enables real-time editing and seamless collaboration, making group projects smoother. This is valuable for professionals working in teams or students collaborating on assignments. Cost-Effective Design: For individuals and businesses on a budget, Canva's free version offers a wide range of design tools. This addresses the problem of expensive design software and allows users to create quality designs without significant financial investment. Quick Turnaround for Design Projects: Canva's efficiency streamlines the design process, allowing for quick turnarounds on projects. This is especially beneficial for those with tight deadlines or last-minute design needs, as it facilitates rapid content creation.
My newest favorite thing about Canva is Canva Magic. I never expected such a big update from Canva but I LOVE IT. Canva is very easy to learn and I have been able to compile many of the things I do into the single program. This year I started video editing in Canva and I like it a lot more than I thought I would. It's user friendly, editing is endless and I literally use it all day long.
I really wish that Canva would provide an app to auto populate video captions. Right now I have to download the video and put it into another program to do this and it's one thing lagging in Canva. The newest text to image/video has a LONG way to go for me to choose it over other programs.
Canva is what I use to create basically everything in my businesses. This includes things like downloadables, book interiors and covers, print on demand designs, videos, photos, logos, etc. It saves me a lot of time and money to have everything in one place.
What I like about Canva is its user friendly interface. I have been using it for a while now to create invitations, business cards, menus, concert tickets, Linkedin, Instagram and Facebook posts and stories, etc. I have used it for social media posting and video creation. The best work I have done with this tool was a digital monthly magazine, which I created entirely with templates and elements from Canva.
I cannot think of a thing that I dislike about this tool. It is complete, and I know it has some functions that I am still unfamiliar with. I think it has everything that I need for what I use it for.
Since I was unable to afford other designing tools like Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator, I reached out to Canva to find a less expensive solution. It has not disappointed me, and I wish someday I could have a big team so I can subscribe to their biggest plan.
Ease of access of the software on different platforms. Availablity of various free tools and templates. User friendly even for a beginner. Cost-friendly premium plans. Easy to integrate and collaborate with other users. Can be used as many times as required and changing the elements is very easy. Availability of social media scheduling.
Lot of good templated are available in only pro version. Limitation on using certain elements while using the free version. Unable to download high quality content on free account. Alignment could be a miss certain times.
Due to the availability of multiple templates it helps with the problem of difficult designing. Earlier people did not have any ideas about how to use certain designing tools and hence they had to seek professional help which could be on the costly side. However, as Canva now provides so many tools and templated, it is easy to get inspiration and use certain ideas to improve the end result without much of professional help. Any layman can now open the user-friendly website and start designing or editing as per their thoughts and ideas.
Canva is a very convenient app! You can edit photos and you can also edit document files. It has a lot of features you can use to edit and you can download it on different format based on your need.
As of now, I honestly don't have anything to dislike about canva. Because for me it's the best of bestest app.
When I need to edit file or even photos, I can easily do it in canva. Most especially in photo editing, you're not going to have a hard time putting elements on the same place with the same size as it also have a guide which is very nice, since not all editing app have that kind of feature. Also, when I'm done editing, I can download the photos or pubmats in the file format I need, such as jpg, png, or even pfd file format. Lastly, if you edited multiple photos, you can download it all in one time which is one of the best feature of this app for me, as it saves time for editors like me.
The drag and drop feature to upload media files like photos and images. The templates have the same ratio and resolution as needed. For example, if I select youtube thumbnail in the template, then it will show templates who can be easily used for youtube thumnails.
I unlike only one thing is the canva pro cost. This is very high
Canva helps to find various types of templates which include Facebook ads, YouTube thumbnails, Instagram ads, etc. On my YouTube channel. I use canva to to make thumbnails. I just make the photo, download it and upload it on the custom thumbnail page.
I have been using Canva for the past 3 years, and it is so full of great elements to design. Its drag-and-drop functionality allows users to effortlessly create stunning visuals without the need for advanced design skills. It is available in both web and mobile applications, which also provide synchronization among the devices. It has both free and premium subscription but premium subscsubscription unlocks a treasure trove of additional resources and features, making it well worth the investment for those seeking more advanced design capabilities.
We won't be able to download the video in high quality using the free subscription.
I design posters and invitations, and Canva provides more functionalities to design them.
I'm loving all the new magic (AI) features, especially Magic design.
Can't always find the elements i'm looking.
Helps me keep my content alined and fresh.
Canva is my primary graphic design application as it has lots of templates to work on. Many templates being free to use, helps to download them. Canva offers a lot at free of cost which can be enough for anyone. The extensive stock images, music and font library is awesome.
Canva could be better if the graphic design had been better and if more photo editing tools were used. The video editor is also not full-featured like bigger videos could not be edited.
Previous to Canva, heavy and paid software needed to be installed. Moreover, we need to search for stock assets for editing. Now we can use the Canva on web and for free. It also provides storage of 5 GB which is enough.
I can't even begin to express how much we love canva. I have personally been using it for about 7 years and now last year we connected our team. With all the new features they add constantly, it has been so helpful for everyone. Love to see what else they come up with in the future.
I have not found any downsides to Canva in my experience.
We create visual ads, social media designs and video.
I really love the wide range of features provided by Canva at a single platform, I can easily design posts almost for every social media here and it's ai/ml assistance makes it more easy.
I think Pricing of canva is a little high and there should be also tutorials and support option available for better designs.
I can easily create amazing posts and logo design using high quality graphics and templates it is providing.
From creating logo designs to video editing and other amazing graphic creations, Canva has made everything so easy for those who don't know how to use professional designing tools. Now with the help of Canva, I can create anything because of its extensive features. Thanks for providing such an amazing platform!
Not at all, there is nothing that really makes one dislike this tool. Even I highly recommend it because of its genuine price and amazing features.
It was very difficult to create graphic designs like banners, logos and others. But thanks to this amazing tool – Canva, which I think is one of the easiest and most amazing designing tools I have ever used.
The best thing about Canva is it's that simple; you don't need a lot of tutorials to get started. I use Canva free version, but I enjoy fast designs from my previous experience with Photoshop. Templates are so good; you can just put your words and go on the complete structure of the template itself.
Only having an online version without an offline version when the internet sucks becomes a problem. If they could make a desktop offline app version, it would work even more enjoyable.
Canva help to solve the problem of finding design ideas and being able to start not from scratch; you find the best template that will work best for you and tweak it the way you want. No more staring at the blank page; you get the starting point and look more professional.
Canva has everything that I need to complete my all work.
I did not find any thing which I dislike.
With Canva, Now i am able to design all the social media post for my client easily and faster.
The most helpful in Canva is its ready world-class templates with stellar designs that can only be seen in their software. It saves your energy and time to think about what color, techniques, and fonts are because it is already there in just one click, and you are good to go. Now, if you are creative, they also have the option to customize and create your design for content creation in social media. I have been making my content using Canva, which attracts more audience, followers, likes and hearts. It is very effective to gain followers and social media marketing for your business.
Honestly, I often encounter glitches in Canva, but it is manageable. My overall experience in Canva is unparallel to any other software, and the team is very supportive and offers a great solution to the problem. Friendly service with so many options to choose from to create compelling content for social media.
I am a Social Media Manager, and it solves my problem in content creation using Canva. With the help of Canva, I created world-class content for my clients, engaged more audiences and gained more followers. It saves my time and money. It changed the way I create content. It gives me more confidence to face my clients. For me, Canva is God's send software to help businesses to be at the top.
It has many featuers and many pre-built templates to use from and much of the design work can be completed within the platform without leaving it it has a huge assets library from which all the required assets can be accesed.
the only downside of canva is that where many platforms are going ahead with ai integration giving many ai featuers canva still has to roll out such ai featuers.
It has many featuers and many pre-built templates to use from and much of the design work can be completed within the platform without leaving it it has a huge assets library from which all the required assets can be accesed. by having soo many featuers integrated into one online platform canva gives me the premium and comfortable feel to work seemlesly and efficiently.
