"All Store - No Business Logic"
What do you like best about Shopify?

It is easy to set up for the most basic store functions and relieves you of the responsibility to setup payment gateways and sandbox testing. The customer service people are very nice (yet slow and responses often are not in-house solutions).

What do you dislike about Shopify?

I am in my 3rd week of testing (extended free trial by 1-week). I signed up because the have been around for seven years and figured their platform must be real advanced by now. It's not. It's like they stop improving the site years ago and just sit on their laurels leaving all the heavy lifting to 3rd Party App Developers. They actually remove features they had to make room for more 3rd party apps (and commissions). Yet they don't update their Training Literature or Videos and you end up banging your head trying to troubleshoot a feature that no longer exist. They need somebody to maintain training literature up to date. They removed the free ability to have mailing list signups go straight to Mailchimp and instead your leads are now mixed in with Customers making this a Business logic / marketing nightmare. They don't listen to customer improvements. The most importing building block of a store after Products is "Collections". When you have hundreds or thousands of products belonging to multiple Collections; you cannot upload this via your CSV File. It becomes a manual editing nightmare. Customers on forums have requested this dating back 5 years and I requested it 5-days ago. It will probably never happen. There are many other little glitches and poor back-end navigation. ex. Collection Page settings are not visible under theme editing unless you click on a collection page in the front end, then it magically appears in the Theme editing. Again their literature leaves this trick/work-around out and you bang your head for hours trying to understand what you are doing wrong. The most basic common sense things are left out. 50 percent of the time you can get an app. Apps are overpriced in many cases for very basic features with out-dated 1990's user-interfaces. They obviously don't set a high bar for their App Partners like say Apple. My advise to Shopify is to get off your laurels and put some effort into improving your core product and bring it up to date and up to speed with very basic business work flow. Don't rely on hack app developers to do everything for you.

What problems is Shopify solving and how is that benefiting you?

Instant Store without a developer. Don't be fooled and think instant store means a few hours. I spent seven 15hr days and am just wrapping up the finishing touches and edits.

"Shopify - Complicated and unfortunately not a good fit for many small businesses as it once was"
What do you like best about Shopify?

If a seller is someone who sells a limited number of items, Shopify may still be a good choice. It's an easy/easier way to rapidly launch a small store.

What do you dislike about Shopify?

Over time, shopify has become much more complex and expensive. Long gone are the days where you quickly set up a store and start selling within a day using minimal addons. Now everything is done through more expensive addons with monthly fees and often requires the intervention of someone knowing specific coding.

What problems is Shopify solving and how is that benefiting you?

As an agency, we only deploy shopify for people that are single item sellers (or selling a few items) - as it it relatively straight forward for such a business.

"Quick set up, nice payment processing, but lack of template customization makes it a no go."
What do you like best about Shopify?

Shopify works magnificently and is easy to use. I used Shopify for my first ecommerce website. I was looking for a low-bar entry with a number of easy to purchase templates that I could get up and running quickly.

What do you dislike about Shopify?

The reason I scrapped Shopify in favor of WooCommerce was due to Shopify's significant lack of customization. Every template I found, including purchased ones, lacked the look and feel for what I was going for. Shopify seems to be designed for a quick launch, but as a result they remove much of the customization that is needed for an advanced or even mid-novice ecommerce site.

What problems is Shopify solving and how is that benefiting you?

I sell my brand of products on a number of marketplaces and have build a strong customer base. My goal was to cut out the middleman (marketplaces and their 15% fee) and provide a location for repeat customers to find my products. I was looking for a low-bar entry with a number of easy to purchase templates that I could get up and running quickly.

"Good option but not great"
What do you like best about Shopify?

Shopify has a solid UI on the backend. It is easy to setup and provides some solid analytics. The settings for integrations to shipping is pretty solid, and the ability to control shipping zones is a great feature. Their marketplace of 3rd party apps is very robust. There is a quite a divide between good and bad apps. The good apps are really really good and typically priced reasonably.

What do you dislike about Shopify?

If you are looking to grow as a brand, this platform may not be for you. You cannot get any analytics from checkout. They limit this to only shopify plus clients. This is a major oversight and really hamstrings new businesses. They are not very good about creating solutions for their own platform. Instead, they just direct you to apps in their marketplace even when it should be something that should be included within shopify. Also, they don't allow you to block IP addresses. This means and time your team visits your website to check functionality etc, their data will be applied to shopify analytics. This ultimate skews your data. If you are experimenting with the checkout process, this will negatively impact your conversion rate. They also don't allow you to merge customer profiles. A customer can use the same card, address, etc and only change their email address. Shopify will create a new customer profile for them. You end up with quite a few duplicate customer profiles.

What problems is Shopify solving and how is that benefiting you?

We use shopify for hosting our e-commerce store and for handling shipping. Shopify does have a pretty solid discount program when you are shipping through USPS. Shipping through UPS and Fedex is still absurdly expensive for small packages.

What do you like best about Shopify?

Shopify has a huge online community and tons of resources to leverage. They also have excellent customer service.

What do you dislike about Shopify?

Shopify is known for being an easy to use ecommerce website builder... right? Well for someone who isn't adept at writing code, it can be extremely challenging to navigate. I don't recommend for someone creating their first website.

"Great idea but.."
What do you like best about Shopify?

I like the ability to create your website and also have a shopping cart

What do you dislike about Shopify?

The pricing is way too high. It seems user-friendly but in reality it’s not. They advertise it as similar to a plug-and-play website and you need a little bit more than that. If you’re at home based business it’s not worth the money you put into it unless you’re going to be making thousands upon thousands of items each month. Setting a site up a site is very complicated and time consuming.

What problems is Shopify solving and how is that benefiting you?

It didn’t solve anything. It wasn’t cost effective.

"My experience with Shopify"
What do you like best about Shopify?

I don't really like much about the platform, since there are better solutions as plugins through Wordpress...

What do you dislike about Shopify?

The cost is the biggest dislike. I feel it isn't competitive in pricing compared to other solutions.

What problems is Shopify solving and how is that benefiting you?

My experience with Shopify was in setting up an e-commerce solution for Top Shelf Vaping. They no longer use it. :( It's was the first solution I found via a Google search and well before I became familiar with Wordpress and WooCommerce.

"Great software, average hardware"
What do you like best about Shopify?

Spotify makes it simple to categorize and find a lot of products by picture. It is an easy interface to learn and makes it easy to train new people to use. You can see at a glance inventory levels for each product and categorized, filter and search for products. It stores and recalls customers quickly. The app works well on my old iPad 3, runs smooth and loads quickly.

What do you dislike about Shopify?

The hardware is buggy, the swipe reader didn't respond 1/2 the time and has to be unplugged and plugged in again to work. Not a deal breakers but for me the card swipes upside down (mag strip up) and it always bothered me a little. Moving to chip introduced a wireless device that has a horrible battery life and drains my iPad faster to with more wireless options enabled. I now have to carry a big battery back-up and two power cords as AC is not available to me when I making sales. After adding 7 more locations I am finding it harder to track over all inventory.

What problems is Shopify solving and how is that benefiting you?

I am tracking sales and inventory and have realized the shopify system is easily scalable, I am still struggling to keep up with inventory and have abandoned the app in favor of a good old spread sheet.

What do you like best about Shopify?

The interface is well designed and easy to use, and it has the capacity to handle different styles and types of listings easily. It works seamlessly with Wanelo and Facebook which are excellent revenue streams for growth.

What do you dislike about Shopify?

It's difficult to manage large inventories or varying inventories and it doesn't play as well with mobile as I'd like. The search functions through shopify are entirely useless so plan to build or budget to have someone else provide a search functionality.

What problems is Shopify solving and how is that benefiting you?

We are listing a large and quickly changing inventory, which is great as this tool works automatically with the other third party tools we have, however it's not built to intuitively handle the magnitude of listings we have and the search function is awful.

"If you want to be Nickel and Dimed, Use Shopify"
What do you like best about Shopify?

There's lots of app plug ins available to customize the store to fit your needs, just be willing to pay way more than you budgeted for once you find out just how many apps you need to get your store to function properly (Shopify lacks a LOT of basic features).

What do you dislike about Shopify?

The fact that anything useful requires a plugin app. We are on the professional plan due to sales volume, and are paying nearly double the original monthly app because we needed plug ins for shipping products, creating reports, bundling products, printing orders, selling digital products, and creating discount codes. Anything you think would be a basic feature is not and requires an extra fee.

What problems is Shopify solving and how is that benefiting you?

Shopify is a more modern version of an online store compared to the platform that we were previously using. We appreciate that customers can log in with accounts and see their purchase history.

"It was good at the beginning but then..."
What do you like best about Shopify?

It's most popular platform for ecommerce, this side is good. Also it's more integration and theme heavenly than the others. I also used some other platforms andi know they are really good, BUT!

What do you dislike about Shopify?

Almost everything with paid and it's not cheap. Also, they banned us for 2 times without any reason. We had all the legal papers, brand registration, company registration, etc...

What problems is Shopify solving and how is that benefiting you?

We were thinking to solve our ecommerce sales problems with shopify bu we couldn't, sadly. We lost 3 months and lost almost 4.000 - 5.000 $ / per month. Plus paids we did to them...
