While it's easy to get WordPress setup on almost any host/server, WP Engine is designed from the ground up to help WordPress developers. Even better, there support team is full of WordPress experts that are quick to help anytime an issue arrises.
At first, the price of the service was somewhat "scary". It's much more expensive that a traditional "shared hosting" - however, after using WP Engine for a couple of weeks, you will quickly realize it is much more than just another web host - WP Engine is a hosting platform built for WordPress.
Have you ever had a client website go down over the weekend - or even worse, stay down for an entire weekend? It's not a fun issue to explain to a client and can literally take money out of your pocket. With WP Engine, we no longer worry about those types of issues.
I've used wpengine and it is a dream. Their customer service is great, and the performance of their servers have been excellent. I also like their portal and tools for us to use. I like how we can use any code we write with WordPress on them, unlike using the biggest name out there which requires you to vet all of your code.
Not much to dislike about them. They may seem a bit more expensive than your cheapo shared hosting plan, but you get what you pay for.
We're able to run and test a lot of code without having to get it vetted. We normally have clients who have to decide on running their own VPS or having their own servers, and using managed hosting from WPEngine has been a dream. Why worry about having your own infrastructure when the WP Engine folks can do it for you? With their portal we also are able to run a large number of instances of WordPress instances and point different domains to them.
The user interface. WP Engine is crafted just for WP. Furthermore, they took conventional hosting (think cPanel) and turned it into something you want to use. Never have user permissions and backups been so simple.
Coming from conventional hosts to WPE, it's very hard to find something to dislike. If I had to say one thing: it's lack of 2 way Git support. However, I know it's in the works! So, all good. ;)
We focus on WordPress development. Before, I had to manage a server. With WP Engine we no longer have worry about things that aren't our strengths, and instead we can focus on those that are. Hosting no longer takes in our day to day problem solving. We know we have partners who handle it best.
Hands down the best hosting solution for wordpress. WPengine has it all: ease of setup, transferability of a developed wordpress, easy development, and improved site speed (which is a huge hangup for most WP sites). The other solutions like Godaddy, Media Temple, Bluehost, and others do not come close with ease of use. Any of these other services require some knowledge of coding, servers, and databases. If you're not a web developer, it can be cumbersome. Other services will also leave you hanging on hold with tech support for hours. With WPEngine, your're live with a fresh install in seconds.
I don't have many bad things to say about the service, although, $30 a month is pretty steep compared to other options for hosting. I think you get what you pay for and WPEngine's options combined with ease of use are worth the price.
I development worpress for multiple clients throughout the year (5-10 sites annually). I do a lot of custom integration work in Wordpress trying to help businesses manage their digital footprint and help provide solutions that make their sites conduits for manual processes. A typical site set up includes API integrations to other cloud software, Payment Gateway Integrations (Stripe, Paypal), contact form integrations, cloud based contracts like Echosign, and email marketing integration to name a few. The benefits of using WPEngine is that I hardly ever have to worry about Wordpress Secruity issues. Traditionally it is easy to hack wordpress and there are a lot of nasty Bots roaming the internet trying to destroy Wordpress sites with malware and other viruses. With WPEngine, I do not have to spend hours configuring and testing my security plugin and worry about if it will lock down my site or cause other errors down the road.
WP Engine provides the the best all around experience from a hosting solution. Their support team is quick to respond to any questions we have about plugins and they've always taken care in deciding what the best plan is for our business.
I really can't think of anything that I dislike about WP Engine.
In working with WP Engine I needed a platform that allowed me to make simple changes to my site and manage plugins effectively. It is great to have the staging site and the page load times are significantly better than multiple hosting companies I have used previously.
Do you want your wordpress site to go fast? Then signup for WPEngine. We saw our site speed increase over 2x after we migrated from self-hosted wordpress. Their support is awesome. They answer questions quickly.
That I didn't know about WPEngine, before I wasted days trying to get caching plugins working on my self-hosted version of wordpress.
Fast business website. Increased visitor count. Easy to use backups.
WP Engine is my go-to choice for my client's WordPress hosting. Not only is their performance second-to-none, but their support is top-notch and incredibly responsive. They're constantly working on new technologies to push WordPress beyond its' perceived limits, such as HHVM (Mercury), GeoIP and WPE Search (powered by Elasticsearch), giving me the ability to provide my clients with the best in technology and best-in-class support when it's needed. Plans scale nicely with traffic, and we've survived some pretty big traffic spikes without downtime. Built-in caching, automatic backups, an integrated staging platform, CDN support and Git Push are just the icing on the cake.
There really isn't anything that I dislike! If I had to pick one thing, I guess it would be the pageview based pricing, though I know that isn't going to affect most of my customers.

They AUTOMATICALLY update WordPress for clients who aren't paying attention. They give several warnings, then go ahead and apply the update. The rationale: Better to have a broken plugin than a hacked site.
Have not found anything to dislike so far. They're more expensive, but WORTH IT.

The speed achieved and their Smart Plugin Manager plugin to take away the hassle and stress of plugin & theme updates.
They are expensive and there can be a lot of upsells.
