ActiveCampaign for Marketing Pros and Cons
- Powerful email builder
- Machine learning enabled helps boost marketing results
- Seamlessly integrates with automations
- On-site chat is an additional, paid add on
- Advanced feature are complicated to use and navigate.
ActiveCampaign’s $15 Starter plan limits each automation to five actions. On a platform bought specifically for automation, that is the number that decides your plan — a welcome sequence, a lead-scoring flow, or an abandoned-cart journey all run past five steps quickly. And the discount you get for accepting that limit shrinks as your list grows: at 25,000 contacts, Starter is displayed at $391 a month while Plus, which has no action cap at all, is $389.
- What it is: A marketing automation platform combining email, automation, CRM, and now WhatsApp, built around a visual automation builder.
- Best for: Businesses whose value comes from behavioural automation rather than from sending newsletters.
- Pricing: Starter $15, Plus $49, Pro $79, Enterprise $145 per month at 1,000 contacts, billed annually. Verified July 2026.
- The honest catch: Starter and Plus are single-user plans; three users arrive at Pro.
What Is ActiveCampaign?
ActiveCampaign’s reputation rests on its automation builder, which is genuinely one of the best in the category: branching conditions, goals, split tests, wait steps, and CRM actions arranged visually. Where most email tools bolt automation onto a newsletter product, ActiveCampaign is an automation product that also sends email.
The 2026 lineup adds two structural things. Channels are now chosen before plans — Email, WhatsApp, or Email + WhatsApp are separate price families — and “Active Intelligence”, the AI layer, appears on every tier but carries unstated limits on Starter and Plus. The page also offers a results guarantee: 30 days or your money back.
Prices are set by contact count through a selector, so every published figure describes a list size rather than a plan.
How ActiveCampaign Works
- Priced by email contacts, chosen from a dropdown that runs from 1,000 to 150,000.
- Automation actions are the Starter cap — five per automation, unlimited from Plus.
- Users ladder late. One on Starter and Plus, three on Pro, five on Enterprise.
- Landing pages start at Plus, not Starter.
- Attribution and conversion tracking start at Pro.
- WhatsApp is a separate plan family, priced independently of email.
ActiveCampaign Pricing
Captured from ActiveCampaign’s pricing page in July 2026 in US dollars, Email plans, billed annually, reading the contact selector at each size.
| Contacts | Starter | Plus | Pro | Enterprise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | $15 | $49 | $79 | $145 |
| 5,000 | $79 | $145 | $205 | $375 |
| 10,000 | $149 | $189 | $375 | $589 |
| 25,000 | $391 | $389 | $629 | $879 |
| 50,000 | $391 | $609 | $969 | $1,169 |
What actually decides your plan:
- Five actions per automation is a hard ceiling, not a soft one. A welcome series that sends three emails with waits between them has already spent its budget. If automation is why you are here — and it usually is — Starter is an email tool with a decorative automation feature, and Plus is the first plan that does the job.
- The Starter discount evaporates with list size. At 1,000 contacts Plus costs 3.3 times more; at 10,000 it costs 27% more; at 25,000 the pricing table shows Starter at $391 against Plus at $389. Whatever the reason for that crossover, nobody with a 25,000-contact list should be choosing Starter over Plus on price.
- Starter’s displayed price stops rising at $391. It reads $391 at 25,000, 50,000, and 75,000 contacts while every other tier keeps climbing. That may be a deliberate ceiling or a quirk of the selector; either way, confirm it with ActiveCampaign before building a budget on it.
- Landing pages require Plus. Starter sends and automates but does not host pages, which matters if you were planning to run campaigns end to end.
- One user until Pro. Both Starter and Plus are single-seat, so a second marketer means $79 at 1,000 contacts — a fivefold step from the headline.
- Attribution is a Pro feature. Knowing which campaign produced revenue starts at $79, which is worth weighing if proving ROI is part of the job.
Who Should Use ActiveCampaign
- Businesses running genuine behavioural automation. The clearest case, and where the builder outclasses most competitors.
- Ecommerce operators. Deep store integrations plus abandoned-cart and post-purchase flows are a core strength.
- Teams wanting email and CRM together. The built-in CRM removes an integration for smaller sales teams.
- Companies adding WhatsApp to the mix, now a first-class channel rather than an integration.
It fits poorly for simple newsletters, where MailerLite or Kit cost far less; for large lists mailed infrequently, where Brevo’s send-based pricing is structurally cheaper; and for teams needing multiple seats early, since three users requires Pro.
Honest Pros and Cons
Strengths
- The best automation builder in its price range. Conditions, goals, and split tests done properly.
- A real CRM included, not a contact list relabelled.
- Deep ecommerce integrations for cart recovery and post-purchase flows.
- WhatsApp as a native channel rather than a bolt-on.
- A 30-day results guarantee, unusual in the category.
- Transparent contact-based pricing, published across the full list-size range.
Limitations
- Five actions per automation on Starter, which undercuts the reason to buy it.
- Starter’s value collapses as lists grow, and inverts against Plus at 25,000 contacts.
- Single user on Starter and Plus.
- No landing pages below Plus.
- Attribution requires Pro at $79.
- AI limits on Starter and Plus are unstated — “limits apply” without a number.
ActiveCampaign Alternatives and How It Compares
- Mailchimp is better known and easier to start with, but weaker on automation logic at comparable prices.
- Brevo charges by emails sent rather than contacts stored, which is structurally cheaper for large, rarely-mailed lists.
- Klaviyo is the ecommerce specialist, stronger on store data and more expensive as profiles accumulate.
- GetResponse and Omnisend occupy similar ground, the latter ecommerce-focused.
- MailerLite and Kit are the cheaper options for creators and simple sending.
- HubSpot Marketing Hub is the heavier all-in-one, with costs that escalate quickly.

The Verdict
ActiveCampaign earns its reputation. The automation builder handles branching logic, goals, and conditional content with a fluency that most competitors at this price cannot match, the CRM is genuinely useful rather than nominal, and the ecommerce integrations make cart-recovery and post-purchase flows straightforward. If your marketing depends on what individual contacts do rather than on what you send everyone, it belongs on the shortlist.
Ignore the $15. Starter caps every automation at five actions, and five actions is not an automation — it is a short sequence. Three emails with a wait between each has consumed the allowance before you have added a condition or a goal. Since automation is the entire reason to prefer ActiveCampaign over a cheaper email tool, buying Starter means paying for the product’s reputation while being locked out of the thing that earned it. Plus at $49 is the honest entry price.
Then set the contact selector to your actual list size, because the plan gap behaves strangely as lists grow. At 1,000 contacts Plus costs 3.3 times Starter; at 10,000 it is only 27% more; and at 25,000 the table shows Starter at $391 against Plus at $389 — the entry plan costing more than the tier above it. Starter’s displayed price then holds at $391 while everything else climbs, which is odd enough that it is worth confirming directly with ActiveCampaign rather than planning around. The practical conclusion is unchanged either way: the cheapest plan is only meaningfully cheap on a small list, and on a small list its automation limit is exactly what you cannot afford.
FAQ
How much does ActiveCampaign cost?
Captured in July 2026 in US dollars for Email plans billed annually at 1,000 contacts: Starter $15, Plus $49, Pro $79, and Enterprise $145 per month. Prices rise with contact count — at 10,000 contacts they are $149, $189, $375, and $589. WhatsApp and Email + WhatsApp are separate plan families with their own pricing. A 30-day results guarantee applies.
What is the 5-action limit on ActiveCampaign Starter?
Starter permits five actions per automation, where an action is any step — sending an email, waiting, applying a tag, updating a field, or branching. A three-email welcome sequence with waits between the emails reaches the limit immediately. Every plan from Plus upward includes unlimited automation actions, which is why Plus is the realistic entry point for anyone buying ActiveCampaign for automation rather than for sending.
Why does Starter cost more than Plus at 25,000 contacts?
That is what ActiveCampaign’s own contact selector displays: $391 for Starter against $389 for Plus at 25,000 contacts. Starter’s shown price then remains $391 at 50,000 and 75,000 while the other tiers keep rising. It may be a deliberate ceiling on the entry plan or a quirk in the pricing table, so confirm it before budgeting — but at that list size there is no price argument for Starter over Plus in any case.
How many users does ActiveCampaign include?
Starter and Plus are both single-user plans. Pro includes three users and Enterprise five. That makes Pro the practical entry point for any marketing team rather than a solo operator, and at 1,000 contacts that is $79 per month against the $15 headline — worth establishing before you compare it against competitors that include several seats lower down.
Is ActiveCampaign better than Mailchimp?
For automation, clearly yes — the builder handles branching conditions, goals, and split tests with more depth than Mailchimp offers at comparable prices, and the built-in CRM is a real one. Mailchimp is easier to start with, better known, and has a free tier. Choose ActiveCampaign when behavioural automation drives revenue, and something simpler when you mostly need to send good-looking campaigns to a list.

ActiveCampaign is an easy to implement and use product. Our team is very happy with how it's been simply the easiest integration we have come across.
I haven't found anything that we do not like yet.
We are hoping it solves getting blocked by our email server during mass email season! Fingers crossed
My favorite part is how Active Campaign. connects with all the platforms I use, Google, Social Media, Website, Eventbrite, and any other way that people find me. I love the simplicity of capturing everyone's information
I do not have anything I dislike about AC
I am able to keep my authenticity and Genuine care for my friends, followers and contacts by utilizing Active Campaign not its full potential
I LOVE creating email sequences for my business! The builder feature is very easy to use and I enjoy the process too! I also feel I can be creative when creating such automation for my business.
Sometimes I have noticed the system can be buggy - there have been a few times I haven't been able to use a certain feature, and when contacting support and waiting in the queue (for sometimes 30 minutes plus,) the chat also bugs out.
Contacting my audience in one go. I love creating an email blast to send to everyone. I can easily duplicate and send again whilst changing a few things, which saves me a lot of time when doing my daily marketing. I really enjoy the fact I can message my audience within minutes.
Active Campaign is the best email platform for automation. The API is wonderful, it integrates easily with other platforms, and the internal automations make sending follow-up emails and tracking results very easy. we've used it for multiple clients and across multiple verticals and we've experienced the same results for everyone. We routinely see open rates of over 50 or 60%, much higher than with other platforms.
The one thing I don't like about Active Campaign is the landing page builder. It seems like an add-on that was tacked on to an otherwise fantastic program. It's difficult to learn, the domain registration is strange, and in general, I wouldn't recommend using it.
We maintain a Partner Network for our internal business. we use it to send case studies out every 2 to 3 weeks. By building out automation and templates we can create new content and track the results easily.
I like the fact that i can send out our price sheets to several different people. I also like the fact that we can see who opened the emails and how many times.
A little hard to learn at first. I had someone who was familiar with the website that helped me.
Getting out a price sheet consistantly with all of my customers
I like the organization of the dashboard
I dislike when creating a new email how difficult it becomes to simply insert images throughout. And something about segmenting the list in a campaign leaves me forever confused (I have to check my numbers to make sure I've isolated the right population). And I'd love a pop-up reminder to change the subject line after duplicating a previous campaign. I've struggled with learning how to apply an action to my entire contact list.
I can see all past emails sent, and have future ones scheduled and ready to go rapidly. I was so inconsistent about messaging my subscribers before.
it is very user friendly and easy to navigate, and after doing much research I realised that ActivaCampaign would have everything I need to run my online business
In one occasion I needed technical support and it took 2 days, and in another occasion, the operator was not very knowledgeable and I had to explain my query 3 times, but other than that I cannot find faults
I am able to automate my campaigns in an easy way, and to run evergreen campaigns easily. In the long run I believe this will be a good investment for me and my time
Ease of use to integrate all my platforms.
At first I was a bit overwhelmed but customer support has been great and since then it's all been easy to implement.
ActiveCompaign is a one step platform to keep my customers and potential customers organized and streamlined through my funnels.
It has every feature we were looking for and it isn't hard to use. Other tools like Hubspot can almost feel overwhelming with all of the features but ActiveCampaign has a well thought out UI that makes navigating all of their features a breeze. It also doesn't break the bank!
So far the only thing we have run into is certain pieces of information in reports for campaigns can be a little hard to find. The information is there but not where you might expect it. Otherwise, the UI/UX is fantastic!
It has allowed us to connect our sales and marketing data in a way we previously could not. Having our CRM in the same system as our email marketing allows for a lot more automation in our client and prospect communication.
Automation, user ease. It's great for sending scheduled emails out.
Takes a bit of time to build our sites out, but at least it's in house.
Building out our own registration sites as well as making a creative site for our clients to go to.
Active Campaign has been a game-changer for us. It's streamlined our daily operations, providing impeccable organization of our data and a clear view of our sales cycle progress. Bonus is the email automations and marketing campaigns, which allow us to plan strategically and reclaim valuable time. 10/10 from us!
Honestly nothing. It's a fantastic tool.
Active Campaign has been a game-changer for us. It's streamlined our daily operations, providing impeccable organization of our data and a clear view of our sales cycle progress. Bonus is is the email automations and marketing campaigns, which empower us to plan strategically and reclaim valuable time. 10/10!
Marketing is hard enough and ActiveCampaign makes it easier by being easy to learn and use and their customer support is responsive and very helpful. Simply put, AC helps you move your business forward.
Sometimes there are glitches that slow progress and reporting is a bit cumbersome but it may be me. :)
ActiveCampaign helps us communicate with followers who want information and that keeps our brand in front of them. It also helps us promote our podcast and online content.
The simplicity of the layout & how helpful the customer service team are when we are stuck on how to achieve something.
It would be great to be able to use conditional content for landing pages.
Active Campaign is helping by following what our customers are doing. Its very helpful for our shop, seeing how many people converted from reading an email. It helps show what our customers are enjoying reading/what they're not responding to. The conversation section is brilliant for our online shop as it means we can chat to our customers through one piece of software rather than having to flip back to shopify each time.
ActiveCampaign provides easy to use templates and suggestions when creating automations for marketing. If you can't figure it out right away, the help center and ActiveCampaign team members always have the answers. The BEST part of ActiveCampaign was the ease of use when integrating another platform with it.
The only struggle I found when using ActiveCampaign was the lack of segment building by time constraints. For example, to create a segment of 30 day openers, I could not select an option like 'has clicked in [# of DAYS]'. Even though this was a workaround I had to adapt to, ActiveCampaign is always listening and encorporating suggestions submitted by their users!
The ability to automate certain communication to customers is an absolute time saver AND the integration capability allows us to take our marketing efforts even further.
Price and functionalities. Easy to manage.
Current SMS integration. Separation on marketing and sales
Managing contacts and sending marketing campaigns
I love the fact that I can market my customers with ease and the tools are such a breeze!
I think everything is great, I just have to learn the tools better!
It's helping me solve the issue of getting information to my clients!
Everything is there and easy to use. Great that you can customised the landing pages and emails to suit your company.
I wish you could copy and paste between landing pages. E.g. copy this section and put it directly into a new landing page.
Email campaigns are working really well. The report section is great as I can see who I can target based on who has opened my emails.
It's user friendly and easy to segment my list, create tags, and set up automations.
The formatting within the campaign creator is frustrating sometimes.
I'm able to market my programs and services to potential clients and get them to know, like, and trust me with my emails.
Active Campaign is a handy marketing tool. It offers a full automation solution, with several possible native integrations (and some with Zapier), several options and pretty much unlimited. The plan limitations are for less used and definitely pro features, which is fair and nicely priced. The support, templates and offered consultants are in-depth and comprehensive. The system also has an embedded CRM function, which, although not the system's strength, is very handy and allows lots of integrations with the marketing side. Although it is not simple to set up, it is not any harder than other similar systems (usual email marketing systems setup) and as easy to manipulate. Setup of the automations is just as complex as you need them, not more not less.
The CRM part is not comparable to dedicated CRM systems (such as Pipedrive, for example), but it does have the basic deal / funnel functions and allows for so much integration with the marketing side that its flaws are only noticeable if the company has a large and savvy sales team.
Active Campaign provides marketing automation in a simple and effective way. Integrating with other tools, landing pages and forms, you have a whole ecosystem.
What I like best about ActiveCampaign is the ease of setting up emails and automations
What is least helpful that active campaign is for automations trying to figure out dates in advance to send them I wish it was a little bit easier
Helps with being able to set up automation in advance, so I don't have to worry about it later
Our email deliverabilty and open rate is great and we use automations to save us time.
We use external landing pages because the landing page funtionality is basic - but the itegrations are great!
The automation and tagging capabilities save us at least 5 hours a week.
The reporting on campaigns is extremely robust, anticipating a lot of information needs that I dodn't know I would have.
I found the drag-and-drop design functions for campaign templates a bit clunky.
We are a startup and needed a way to send bulk emails to a large number of people and then track and segment their participation in our campaigns. 10/10.
The automation features are the reason we moved over to Active Campaign. We are excited to use the tools available to customize and taylor our marketing campaigns to our customers on an individual basis.
We have struggled with deliverability and increasing that metric. However, we are getting a handle on it, so although, it will take some time to grow we are certain all the time and effort will be well worth it.
Active Campaign is helping us grow our customer pipeline and customize our marketing efforts specifically for each individual customer based on their purchase history. That level of customization and automation is such a valuable tool.
I especially like the automations. They're so user friendly and intuitive. I'm a novice with this stuff and it was so simple to learn in a "if this, then that" format. I appreciate how it seamlessly integrates with my website to collect emails and automate follow up offers.
The contact limit feels well, limiting. It forces me to basically do a clean up of all my contacts every 2-3 months rather than being able to grow a substantional base of contacts that I can use longer term. Their are different pricing tiers for contacts, but they don't seem to scale properly at all. It costs like 6x as much to get 2x as many contacts.
It solves the problem of being able to easily communicate with ALL of my customers (and potential customers) in one email blast.
There are so many features with active campaign. First, their pricing structure favours small businesses and startups and grows as you do. There are so many plugins and options and workflow. The support system is the best I've seen. As I was building automation there were many articles and podcasts and videos to resort to and when I don't find my answer I scheduled a 1:1 video chat for the same day and he helped me build out my automation live with him and saved me so much time. it has so many plugins and partners, you can send videos, pdfs, SMS, and other integrations I haven't explored yet. compared to others like Keap, its very robust, but I'm not sure if it has a shopping cart function.
I haven't found anything I dislike yet. you may need somene to pay to build your automation because it can get tedious and time consuming, but they also have "recipes" of prebuilt common automation to help save time as well. As I mentioned above , the pros outweigh the cons by so much . i need to find an activecampaign expert to help implement all the processes, maps and workflows I have planned, that is probably the only downside is that it is intuitive, but time consuming .
i needed an automated marketing machine that takes my leads through their customer journey as I feed it information and prompts through forms. it can delivers lead magnet, welcome and reactivtion series of emails, birthday campaigns and general broadats. deliverability is good and its fairly intuitive.
I like that you can see what was clicked on and how many times and by who in each email campaign. It helps identify a warm versus cold lead
It's definitely a little more techy, so just be prepared to take some time to learn the platform. It's good though because as my company grows it grows with me. I don't need to switch to a new platform
Automating my prospect touch point process and follow up
The automations are by far the best feature of ActiveCampaign. I can create powerful customer experience workflows, and monitor their performance on a daily basis to check what works and what doesn't. The software is easy to use, easy to set up and implement, and allows you to integrate a number of apps (including website tracking) to create powerful automations. The customer service is excellent and are very fast to respond. I use ActiveCampaign every day for multiple businesses.
I struggle to find any major disadvantages that the product has over competitive offerings. The only downside is that Activecamapign costs more than the likes of Mailchimp, etc. However, the price is justified as the product is considerably better. The only thing I think could be improved with Activecampaign is to introduce a feature that allows you to create a segment of disengaged subscribers, so that a reengagement campaign can be sent to them.
ActiveCampaign allows us to build mailing lists automatically using APIs, segment the list according to demographics, and send highly targeted automated emails to segments of customers. The software is easy to use, has high email delivery rates, and ultimately results in several thousands in increased sales every year.
ActiveCampaign is very user friendly and support is quite responsive to customers. I've been very pleased during the time I've been working with this company. I send out emails daily and have never had downtime that interrupted my workflow. When I switched to AC it couldn't have been more painless - they took care of everything and made it a snap to being working with them. It was like magic!
I'm not very techie so I do find the technical aspects of it a bit confusing.
AC makes it fast and easy to reach my readers at any time!
ActiveCampaign makes it easy to capture emails, order them into lists and manage information collected from clients through surveys. They make my consulting business a lot easier to keep organized
I'm still getting used to the email campaigns, as a long time mailchimp user, there has been an adjustment period.
It completely solved my issue of new lead management.
Easy to handle, some parts could need an design upgrade and some parts are perfect. The last update about the mobile device section was major but also necessary
Some parts are to "complicated" if you are looking for an minimal modern design to do it completely on your own - but they have tons of templates - maybe they could work on the quality and diversification
Better communication, on boarding and warming up leads, follow ups, services
